\u201cDonald Trump has drawn \u2018first blood\u2019 in the search for his incoming administration\u2019s senior arts role \u2013 by tapping up Rambo legend Sylvester Stallone,\u201d Daily Mail is reporting<\/a>. \u201cThe likely position would be Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency that doles out funds to aspiring artists and creative projects.\u201d<\/p>\n The first reaction might be \u201cWho gives a\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n A more thoughtful question would be \u201cWhere is there constitutional authority to even have such a federal entity in the first place, and why shouldn\u2019t we expect a Republican-dominated executive and legislature to abolish it?\u201d<\/p>\n After all, the power delegated to Congress in Article. 1. Section. 8. \u201cTo promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts\u201d specifies it does so \u201cby securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries\u2026\u201d It doesn\u2019t authorize taking wealth from its earners and redistributing it.<\/p>\n We might also ask \u201cWhat is Trump, who owes much of his victory to gun owners, doing offering an avowed gun-grabber any<\/em> position in his administration?\u201d<\/p>\n As I wrote for GUNS & Ammo Magazine several years ago<\/a>\u00a0(so the archived link may load slowly):<\/p>\n \u201cUntil America, door to door, takes every handgun, this is what you\u2019re gonna have.\u201d \u2013Sylvester Stallone<\/p>\n That the star of \u201cRambo,\u201d who made his fortune exploiting armed violence, should call on government raids to disarm millions of real veterans and the rest of his countrymen goes beyond hypocritical. Not that any of that stopped him from applying for\u00a0his own concealed carry permit<\/a>\u00a0(practically impossible for an \u201cordinary\u201d citizen to get in \u201cmay issue L.A.).<\/p>\n As he goes about making his selections for appointments\u00a0\u2014 some actually Constitutional \u00a0\u2014 the people who voted for Donald Trump need to remind him why staying on a true course is important. That\u2019s something Oath Keepers weighed in on<\/a> when names like David Petraeus were being floated for Secretary of State. \u00a0And while it\u2019s true that a seat on the NEA ought to have little practical impact on the lives of most Americans (and assuming no one in government will have the guts to just shutter the agency), Trump needs to be made to realize that \u2013 his personal relationship with Stallone notwithstanding \u2013 appointing him to anything<\/em> will be a slap in the face of every gun owner who voted for him.<\/p>\n
