Once third-party fact checkers have confirmed that the story is fake, it will be labeled as such and demoted in the News Feed.<\/p>\n<p>A company\u00a0spokesperson\u00a0told Business Insider that the social network\u00a0will also use other signals, like\u00a0algorithms that\u00a0detect whether a story that appears fake is going viral, to determine if it should label the story as fake and\u00a0bury it in peoples&#8217; feeds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve focused our efforts on the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain, and on engaging both our community and third party organizations,&#8221; Facebook News Feed chief Adam Mosseri <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2016\/12\/news-feed-fyi-addressing-hoaxes-and-fake-news\/\">said in a company blog post<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right\"><span class=\"image on-image\" data-post-image=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.businessinsider.com\/image\/5852de85ca7f0ccb018b5ef2-896\/undefined\" alt=\"Disputed Story\" data-mce-source=\"Facebook\" \/><span class=\"caption-source\"><span class=\"caption\">Facebook&#8217;s new label for fake news.<\/span><span class=\"source\">Facebook<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A team of Facebook researchers will also review website domains and send sites\u00a0that appear to be fake or spoofed (like &#8220;<span class=\"skimlinks-unlinked\">washingtonpost.co<\/span>&#8220;) to third-party fact checkers, a Facebook spokesperson said. Of the 42 news organizations that have committed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checkers-code-of-principles\/\">Poynter&#8217;s fact-checking code of ethics<\/a>, Facebook is starting out with the following four:\u00a0Snopes, <span class=\"skimlinks-unlinked\">Factcheck.org<\/span>, ABC News, and PolitiFact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are only involved to the extent that Facebook relies on the list of signatories to our code of principles as a starting point for the organizations it chooses to verify,&#8221; a Poynter spokesperson told Business Insider. &#8220;Facebook is the only organization certifying third party fact-checkers on its platform.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has given its\u00a0four initial\u00a0fact-checking partners\u00a0access to a tool that will let\u00a0them label stories in the News Feed as fake, a Facebook spokesperson said. The spokesperson said that Facebook is not paying the organizations to fact check.<\/p>\n<h2>Cracking down on ads for fake news<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"KonaFilter image-container display-table\"><span class=\"image on-image\" data-post-image=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static2.businessinsider.com\/image\/5852ded8ca7f0c1c008b5f5c-811\/undefined\" alt=\"Sharing Disputed Story\" data-mce-source=\"Facebook\" data-mce-caption=\"Facebook will show this warning before someone shares a story that has been labeled as fake.\" \/><span class=\"caption-source\"><span class=\"caption\">Facebook will show this warning before someone shares a story that has been labeled as fake.<\/span><span class=\"source\">Facebook<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The websites\u00a0that Facebook determines to be fake news organizations or spoofed domains will also not be able to sell ads on the social network. Owners of fake news sites <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fake-news-writer-paul-horner-thinks-he-got-trump-elected-2016-11\">can make thousands of dollars per month<\/a>through internet ads.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has repeatedly said that it&#8217;s not a media company, but rather an open technology platform that relies on media\u00a0publishers and its users to share\u00a0accurate information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not think of ourselves as editors,&#8221; Facebook head of media partnerships\u00a0Patrick Walker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-may-label-fake-news-2016-12\">said during a recent journalism conference in Dublin<\/a>. &#8220;We believe it\u2019s essential that Facebook stay out of the business of deciding what issues the world should read about.
