(AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p>The publisher of The New York Times penned\u00a0a letter to readers Friday promising that the paper would \u201creflect\u201d on its coverage of this year\u2019s election while rededicating itself to reporting on \u201cAmerica and the world\u201d honestly.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., the paper\u2019s embattled publisher, appealed to Times readers for their continued support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot deliver the independent, original journalism for which we are known without the loyalty of our subscribers,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Letter to NYT readers from Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and Dean Baquet <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jORqzx3BA9\">pic.twitter.com\/jORqzx3BA9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Sydney Ember (@melbournecoal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/melbournecoal\/status\/797171598163898368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 11, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>New York Post columnist and former Times reporter Michael Goodwin <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/11\/11\/new-york-times-we-blew-it-on-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>, &#8220;because it [The Times] demonized Trump from start to finish, it failed to realize he was onto something. And because the paper decided that Trump\u2019s supporters were a rabble of racist rednecks and homophobes, it didn\u2019t have a clue about what was happening in the lives of the Americans who elected the new president.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sulzberger&#8217;s letter was released after the paper\u2019s public editor, Liz Spayd, took the paper to task for its election coverage. She pointed out how its polling feature Upshot gave Hillary Clinton an 84 percent chance as voters went to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>She compared stories that the paper ran about President-elect Donald Trump and Clinton, where the paper made Clinton look functional and organized and the Trump campaign discombobulated.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The NYT would do well to plant some roots in Red America <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HDd4SFJqtq\">https:\/\/t.co\/HDd4SFJqtq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Liz Spayd (@spaydl) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/spaydl\/status\/796445306262941696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 9, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Spayd wrote, \u201cReaders are sending letters of complaint at a rapid rate.
