Sen. Joe Minchin delivered a sharp rebuke Friday to Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid for denouncing Americans who elected Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
\u201cSenator Harry Reid\u2019s statement today attacking President-elect Trump is wrong! It is an absolute embarrassment to the Senate as an institution, our Democratic party, and the nation,\u201d Mr. Manchin, West Virginia Democrat, said in a statement released late Friday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to be very clear, he does not speak for me,\u201d said Mr. Manchin, one of the most conservative Democrats in the upper chamber of the U.S. Congress.<\/p>\n
Mr. Reid, Nevada Democrat, lashed out at Americans who backed Mr. Trump, saying they confirmed the ascendance of \u201chate and bigotry in America.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWatching white nationalists celebrate while innocent Americans cry tears of fear does not feel like America,\u201d said Mr. Reid, who is retiring from the Senate this year.<\/p>\n

Mr. Manchin said that Mr. Reid\u2019s rhetoric was helping tear the country apart.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe American people have spoken and Donald Trump is our President-elect,\u201d he said. \u201cSenator Reid\u2019s words needlessly feed the very divisiveness that is tearing this country apart. Now, more than ever, it is time for us all to come together as Americans. We must as Secretary Clinton and President Obama so graciously said, have an open mind and give President-elect Trump the chance to lead.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be clear, as I have always said and believed, I will work with anyone, no matter their party, to improve the lives of West Virginians and all Americans,\u201d the Mountain State senator said. \u201cJust as I will oppose anyone who may propose policies that hurt our nation; we are Americans first, not Democrats or Republicans first.\u201d<\/p>\n
In conclusion, Mr. Manchin said, \u201cUnfortunately, there are some who forget that at times like these it is wrong to put party and politics above our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
