REUTERS\/Pascal Lauener<\/span><\/div>\n<p>The memo, found in one of thousands of Podesta emails published by WikiLeaks, underscores just how involved \u201cbig money\u201d is in the inner workings of the political left.<\/p>\n<p>Equally important, it\u00a0lays bare what has been a largely successful effort by progressives to control public discourse, change\u00a0American demographics and divide the electorate by categories such as race, gender and age.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"View NYC Meeting 2007 (Final Draft)(4) on Scribd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/329671653\/NYC-Meeting-2007-Final-Draft-4#from_embed\">NYC Meeting 2007 (Final Draft)(4)<\/a> by <a title=\"View Peter Hasson's profile on Scribd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/user\/336280238\/Peter-Hasson#from_embed\">Peter Hasson<\/a> on Scribd<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/329671653\/content?start_page=1&amp;view_mode=scroll&amp;access_key=key-WzwZnALVfyi6K5wP05tp&amp;show_recommendations=true\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-auto-height=\"false\" data-aspect-ratio=\"0.7729220222793488\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The memo went out to several major Clinton donors, including George Soros, Peter Lewis, Steve Bing and Herb and Marion Sandler, giving them\u00a0a preview\u00a0of an upcoming September 27, 2007 meeting between the donors and Podesta, who was president of the Soros-funded Center for American Progress at that time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur meeting in New York brings together the most generous funders of progressive causes and progressive infrastructure in the country,\u201d the memo notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sit in September 2007, in a much different position than August 2003, when the same group literally jump-started an independent effort to change course in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memo lists a number of \u201cstrategic goals\u201d for progressive elites in 2008 and the years following.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating a \u2018strong echo chamber\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One such goal is to \u201cControl the political discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo much effort over the past few years has been focused on better coordinating, strengthening, and developing progressive institutions and leaders,\u201d the memo explains to the donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that this enhanced infrastructure is in place\u2014grassroots organizing; multi-issue advocacy groups; think tanks; youth outreach; faith communities; micro-targeting outfits; the netroots and blogosphere\u2014we need to better utilize these networks to drive the content of politics through a strong \u2018echo chamber\u2019 and message delivery system,\u201d it continues.<\/p>\n<p>The memo\u2019s reference to creating an \u201cecho chamber\u201d bears semblance to the language used by\u00a0Obama adviser Ben Rhodes who bragged about how the Obama administration used the media to <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2016\/05\/22\/ploughshares-fund-funded-media-campaign-on-iran-nuclear-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">create an \u201cecho chamber\u201d<\/a> around the Iran nuclear deal. The liberal nonprofit involved in creating that \u201cecho chamber\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/national-security\/wh-partner-asked-soros-to-fund-echo-chamber\/\" target=\"_blank\">asked Soros to fund their efforts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Voter registration efforts: a ploy to get progressive voters to the polls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The memo also suggests\u00a0that voter registration efforts by nonprofit organizations are really just a ploy to get progressive voters out to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNon-partisan voter registration can be highly effective in delivering progressive voters to the polls,\u201d the memo states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sandler family and OSI are already deeply involved in funding organizations to do this work in communities of color and with respect to unmarried women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Securing \u2018advantageous\u2019 demographics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another goal of progressive elites, according to the memo, is to \u201cEnsure that demographics is destiny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn \u2019emerging progressive majority\u2019 is a realistic possibility in terms of demographic and voting patterns. But it is incomplete in terms of organizing and political work. Women, communities of color, and highly educated professionals are core parts of the progressive coalition. Nationally, and in key battleground states, their influence is growing,\u201d the memo explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLatinos and young voters are quickly solidifying in this coalition as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A section titled \u201cThe theory of the case\u201d notes that Democrats should be \u201cfocused on securing advantageous demographic and geographical trends, making the best use of existing strengths, and continuing to encourage innovation in organizing, campaigning, and media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another step progressives should take, according to the memo, is to \u201cSolidify groups that are trending Democratic\u201d like Latinos and millennials.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Latinos, the memo says, \u201cThis is an election that could really solidify a cross-section of this community and this work should be considered a top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memo also notes that \u201cThe rapid increase in demographic importance of Latinos will continue for decades. Hispanics have surpassed blacks as the nation\u2019s largest minority group, and Census projections indicate that by about mid-century Hispanics will be one-quarter of the U.S. population (at which point or shortly thereafter, the United States will become a majority-minority nation).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memo makes clear that progressives should make concerted efforts to lock down\u00a0both millennials and women as reliable progressive voters<\/p>\n<p>While the memo does stress the electoral importance of African-Americans, it also describes them as\u00a0the \u201cmost reliable bloc in the Democratic camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andy Stern and Anne Berger, then the president and secretary-treasurer of the\u00a0Service Employees International Union (SEIU) are listed as co-authors on the memo, alongside Podesta.<\/p>\n<p>On October 2, 2007\u00a0\u2014 after the meeting would have taken place \u2014 Podesta\u2019s executive assistant <a href=\"http:\/\/wikileaks.org\/podesta-emails\/emailid\/40992\" target=\"_blank\">emailed the memo\u00a0to Stan Greenberg<\/a>, head of Democratic polling firm Democracy Corps.<\/p>\n<p>The memo does include a couple legal caveats.
