Dot #2: Alicia Machado<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n

From Wikipedia: \u201cMachado won the 1995 Miss Venezuela<\/a> pageant entering Yaracuy<\/a> and then the Miss Universe 1996<\/a> crown in Las Vegas<\/a>. The runner-up, Jacqueline Aguilera<\/a>, also won the Miss World 1995<\/a> crown, marking the second time that two Venezuelans from the same pageant won two world titles. Machado\u2019s reign came as American businessman Donald Trump<\/a> took ownership of the Miss Universe pageant. During her reign as Miss Universe, Machado made headlines when it was reported that she gained too much weight and the Miss Universe Organization<\/a> was considering replacing her with her runner-up, Taryn Mansell<\/a> of Aruba. After winning the Miss Universe title in 1996, Machado announced that all she wanted to do was \u201ceat, eat and eat\u201d.[1]<\/a><\/sup> Machado retained her title. Trump called her \u201can eating machine\u201d, generating controversy.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

HOLT:<\/strong> Very quickly, because we\u2019re at the final question now.<\/p>\n

CLINTON: You know, he tried to switch from looks to stamina. But this is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs, and someone who has said pregnancy is an inconvenience to employers, who has said\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

TRUMP: I never said that.<\/p>\n

CLINTON:<\/strong> \u2026. women don\u2019t deserve equal pay unless they do as good a job as men.<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t say that.<\/p>\n

CLINTON: And one of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest. He loves beauty contests, supporting them and hanging around them. And he called this woman \u201cMiss Piggy.\u201d Then he called her \u201cMiss Housekeeping,\u201d because she was Latina. Donald, she has a name.<\/strong><\/p>\n

TRUMP: Where did you find this? Where did you find this?<\/p>\n

CLINTON: Her name is Alicia Machado.<\/strong><\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> Where did you find this?<\/p>\n

CLINTON:<\/strong> And she has become a U.S. citizen, and you can bet\u2026<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> Oh, really? CLINTON: \u2026 she\u2019s going to vote this November.<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> You know, Hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials. Some of it\u2019s said in entertainment. Some of it\u2019s said \u2014 somebody who\u2019s been very vicious to me, Rosie O\u2019Donnell, I said very tough things to her, and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her.<\/p>\n

But you want to know the truth? I was going to say something\u2026<\/p>\n

HOLT:<\/strong> Please very quickly.<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> \u2026 extremely rough to Hillary, to her family, and I said to myself, \u201cI can\u2019t do it. I just can\u2019t do it. It\u2019s inappropriate. It\u2019s not nice.\u201d But she spent hundreds of millions of dollars on negative ads on me, many of which are absolutely untrue. They\u2019re untrue. And they\u2019re misrepresentations.<\/p>\n

And I will tell you this, Lester: It\u2019s not nice. And I don\u2019t deserve that.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s certainly not a nice thing that she\u2019s done. It\u2019s hundreds of millions of ads. And the only gratifying thing is, I saw the polls come in today, and with all of that money\u2026<\/p>\n

HOLT:<\/strong> We have to move on to the final question.<\/p>\n

TRUMP:<\/strong> \u2026 $200 million is spent, and I\u2019m either winning or tied, and I\u2019ve spent practically nothing.<\/p>\n

THE BIG IDEA: It might be Hillary Clinton\u2019s most cunning move since the start of the general election. <\/strong>The Democratic nominee set a trap for Donald Trump in the final minutes of the first debate, and he walked right into it.<\/p>\n

The GOP nominee\u2019s decision to take the bait and rehash his past attacks of a former Miss Universe for gaining too much weight is now dominating the conversation. And the controversy is helping the Clinton campaign galvanize Latinos and prevent undecided women from moving toward Trump.<\/p>\n

Even as Trump proclaimed victory in New York, he allowed during a Fox News interview yesterday that he let himself get a little too irritated \u201cat the end, maybe\u201d when Clinton brought up Alicia Machado. Machado alleges that Trump called her names such as \u201cMiss Piggy\u201d and \u201cMiss Housekeeping\u201d when she gained weight after winning the Miss Universe crown in 1996.<\/p>\n

Trump could have brushed off the question and moved on the next morning, but instead he engaged. \u201cShe was the worst we ever had. The worst. The absolute worst. She was impossible,\u201d Trump said of Machado on Fox. \u201cShe was the winner, and she gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem. We had a real problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2014 Operatives in Brooklyn had been working with Machado since the summer.<\/strong> They had a video featuring her story<\/a> ready to go. Cosmopolitan<\/a> had a photo spread of her draped in an American flag \u2013 to go with a profile \u2013 in the can. Machado had also conducted an interview with The Guardian that was \u201capparently embargoed for post-debate release,\u201d according to Vox<\/a>. And the Clinton super PAC Priorities USA turned a digital ad<\/a> to highlight the insults by early afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Clinton press shop then set up a conference call for Machado to respond to what Trump said on \u201cFox and Friends.\u201d <\/strong>Speaking with reporters, Machado recounted how Trump \u201calways treated me like a lesser thing, like garbage\u201d and that his new words are like \u201ca bad dream.\u201d She said in a mix of Spanish and halting English that she watched the debate with her mother and daughter and cried as Clinton recounted her story, Ed O\u2019Keefe reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Campaign calls like these are usually gimmicky ploys that get little attention, but this one played prominently in every news organization\u2019s second-day coverage about the debate. <\/strong>Megyn Kelly, against whom Trump leveled gendered attacks against last year after she moderated a debate, then interviewed Machado in primetime on Fox News last night.<\/p>\n
