Writing in the <a href=\"http:\/\/theintercept.com\/2016\/09\/18\/washpost-makes-history-first-paper-to-call-for-prosecution-of-its-own-source-after-accepting-pulitzer\/\">Intercept<\/a>, he called the decision made by the Washington-based publication an <em>\u201cact of journalistic treachery,\u201d<\/em> by saying Snowden should not be pardoned.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn doing so, the Washington Post has achieved an ignominious feat in US media history: the first-ever paper to explicitly editorialize for the criminal prosecution of its own source \u2014 one on whose back the paper won and eagerly accepted a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service,\u201d<\/em> Greenwald wrote.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBut even more staggering than this act of journalistic treachery against the paper\u2019s own source are the claims made to justify it,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To defend NSA from critics, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/washingtonpost?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WashingtonPost<\/a> attacks the story they broke. Which won the Pulitzer for Public Service. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/S4T2Aj0mEv\">https:\/\/t.co\/S4T2Aj0mEv<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Edward Snowden (@Snowden) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden\/status\/777541873858666497?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 18, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Post has called on Snowden to return to the US from Russia, where he has been granted asylum, adding that this would <em>\u201cbe in the best tradition of civil disobedience, whose practitioners have always been willing to go to jail for their beliefs.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The newspaper also states that Snowden <em>\u201churt his own credibility as an avatar of freedom by accepting asylum from Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Intercept, the New York Times and the Guardian, who also published the NSA leaks, in contrast to the Post\u2019s editorial, have called on the US government to allow Snowden to return to the US and not face any charges.<\/p>\n<p>Greenwald was scathing of the Post, saying that the paper fails to note that it was not Snowden, <em>\u201cbut the top editors of the Washington Post who decided to make these programs public.
