{"id":48155,"date":"2016-09-08T07:58:46","date_gmt":"2016-09-08T11:58:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=48155"},"modified":"2016-09-08T11:53:24","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T15:53:24","slug":"trump-says-putin-a-leader-far-more-than-our-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=48155","title":{"rendered":"Trump says Putin &#8216;a leader far more than our president&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->BBC<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Donald Trump has showered Vladimir Putin with praise as he and rival Hillary Clinton took pointed questions from military veterans.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican presidential nominee told the forum the Russian president &#8220;has been a leader far more than our president [Obama] has been&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It came on the same day the chief of the Pentagon accused Russia of sowing the seeds of global instability.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Clinton, meanwhile, defended her judgment despite her email scandal.<\/p>\n<p>The White House candidates appeared back to back on stage in half-hour segments at the Intrepid Air and Sea Museum in New York on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/election-us-2016-35404043\">Trump and Clinton quizzed &#8211; as it happened<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/election-us-2016-37303432\">Trump defends military sex assault tweet<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-37286988\">Why Trump strikes a chord with Russians<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/election-us-2016-36862749\">Are there any Trump links to Putin?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quizzed by NBC host Matt Lauer on his previous complimentary remarks about Mr Putin, Mr Trump responded: &#8220;He does have an 82% approval rating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think when he calls me brilliant I&#8217;ll take the compliment, ok?&#8221; added the businessman.<\/p>\n<p>He said Mr Putin had &#8220;great control over his country&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump also predicted that if elected in November, &#8220;I think that I&#8217;ll be able to get along with him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The property magnate recently drew sharp criticism when he urged Russia to dig up the emails that Mrs Clinton deleted from her email server.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Unilluminating blather&#8217; &#8211; US media&#8217;s initial response<\/h2>\n<p>Gabriel Debenedetti writes <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/09\/clinton-trump-commander-forum-227860\">on the Politico website<\/a> that neither candidate did much to advance their cause, with Hillary Clinton spending &#8220;a third of the time fending off questions about her emails&#8221; while &#8220;Donald Trump struggled to explain his secret plan to defeat the Islamic State.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/4483368\/nbc-military-forum-donald-trump-hillary-clinton\/\">Time agreed<\/a>, citing &#8220;plenty of unilluminating blather spewed by both candidates&#8221;. It said: &#8220;The most dispiriting thing was the grim view of the world the candidates gave Americans, with their relentless focus on fighting and terror&#8230; There was scant optimism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One focus was on the performance of NBC moderator Matt Lauer. <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/09\/08\/us\/politics\/matt-lauer-forum.html?hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=first-column-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\">The New York Times<\/a> pronounced that the &#8220;consensus afterwards was not kind&#8221;. &#8220;Mr Lauer found himself besieged&#8230; by critics of all political stripes, who accused the anchor of unfairness, sloppiness and even sexism in his handling of the event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lauer&#8217;s main miss, it seemed, was not to press Donald Trump when he said he had not supported the war in Iraq. <a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/9\/7\/12842998\/trump-iraq-libya-lie-command-in-chief-forum\">Vox <\/a>was among those pointing to a 2002 Trump interview with radio host Howard Stern that contradicts this.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/election-us-2016-37305655\">Forum moderator Lauer suffers backlash<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<p>It is not the first time Mr Trump has made admiring comments about the Russian leader.<\/p>\n<p>Last December he said it was &#8220;a great honour&#8221; when Mr Putin called him &#8220;a talented person&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump&#8217;s latest remarks came hours after US Defence Secretary Ash Carter said Russia &#8220;has clear ambition to erode the principled international order&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech at Oxford University, Mr Carter also appeared to allude to suspected<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-36533449\">Russian involvement in hacking<\/a> of Democratic National Committee computers in the US.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night, Mr Trump also courted controversy over sex abuse in the military.<\/p>\n<p>He stood by a comment he made three years ago when he appeared to blame such assaults on the decision to allow women in the forces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a correct tweet,&#8221; Mr Trump said of the 2013 Twitter post in which he remarked: &#8220;What did these geniuses expect when they put men &amp; women together?&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Uncomfortable moments &#8211; Anthony Zurcher, BBC News<\/h2>\n<p>The 30 minutes allotted to each candidate made the proceedings feel like the political equivalent of speed-dating.<\/p>\n<p>And like speed-dating gone wrong, there was plenty of time for the participants to bury themselves with their words.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Clinton once again tripped up when discussing her use of a private email server as secretary of state.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump found new and interesting ways to show his tenuous command of policy details and shower questionable praise on a US rival.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/election-us-2016-37292761\">Read Anthony&#8217;s analysis in full<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"story-body__line\" \/>\n<p>Mrs Clinton, who appeared first on stage by virtue of a coin toss, found herself once again on the defensive over her private email server.<\/p>\n<p>A US naval flight officer told the former secretary of state he would have been jailed if he had handled classified information as she had done.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"http:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/8F8A\/production\/_91064763_047b7a05-c53e-40f4-b85b-fc2ff265c757.jpg\" alt=\"Donald Trump tweets: \" width=\"624\" height=\"305\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><span class=\"off-screen\">Image copyright<\/span><span class=\"story-image-copyright\">TWITTER<\/span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>The Democratic nominee replied: &#8220;I did exactly what I should have done and I take it very seriously.
