But in that case steps would have to be taken to prevent the animals from breeding.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><em>Several scientists said they are thrilled by the new policy. \u201cIt\u2019s very, very welcome news that NIH will consider funding this type of research,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/animalscience.ucdavis.edu\/faculty\/ross\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pablo Ross<\/a>, a developmental biologist at the University of California, Davis, trying to grow human organs in farm animals. \u201cWe need funding to be able to answer some very important questions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But critics denounced the decision. \u201cScience fiction writers might have imagined worlds like this \u2014 like\u00a0The\u00a0Island of Dr. Moreau,\u00a0Brave New World,\u00a0Frankenstein,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nymc.edu\/faculty\/directory\/by-name\/newman-stuart\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stuart Newman<\/a>, a biologist at New York Medical College. \u201cThey\u2019ve been speculations. But now they\u2019re becoming more real. <strong>And I think that we just can\u2019t say that since it\u2019s possible then let\u2019s do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><em>The public has 30 days to comment on the proposed new policy.
