Army \" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"read-more__title\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"read-more__footer\">Read more \u00a0<\/span><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/353126-campbell-nato-coup-turkey\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"read-more__footer\">Former NATO commander \u2018behind failed coup against Erdogan\u2019 \u2013 Turkish daily<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Department of State made this decision following the July 15 attempted coup and subsequent declaration by the Turkish government of a 90-day State of Emergency,\u201d<\/em> a security message<a href=\"http:\/\/turkey.usembassy.gov\/sm-072616.html\">published<\/a>\u00a0on the embassy\u2019s website on Tuesday states.<\/p>\n<p>The Department <em>\u201cadvises US citizens to reconsider travel to Turkey at this time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDuring this period, US citizens in Turkey may see an increase in police or military activities and restrictions on movement,\u201d<\/em> a memo emailed to US citizens residing in Turkey states.<\/p>\n<p>US government personnel in Turkey are banned from traveling into the southeastern provinces of the country, and American citizens have been advised to <em>\u201cavoid areas in close proximity to the Syrian border.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said ahead of a trip to the US that ties with Washington could turn sour unless the US extradites cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is currently residing in the country. Ankara blames Gulen for being behind the failed coup.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">US State Dept. clears way for family of diplomats in Istanbul and Ankara to leave Turkey in wake of failed coup: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SOThSpuV0j\">pic.twitter.com\/SOThSpuV0j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Dion Nissenbaum (@DionNissenbaum) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DionNissenbaum\/status\/757812573471256576?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Washington has repeatedly said that Turkey must give clear evidence of Gulen\u2019s link with the attempted coup before discussing any possible extradition.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Monday, Turkey\u2019s Yeni Safak newspaper alleged that the former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, retired US Army General John F. Campbell, was the mastermind behind the failed military coup in Turkey, citing sources close to the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>According to Yeni Safak, Campbell <em>&#8220;also managed more than $2 billion in transactions via UBA Bank in Nigeria by using CIA links to distribute among the pro-coup military personnel in Turkey.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The retired US general had allegedly paid <em>&#8220;at least two secret visits&#8221;<\/em> to Turkey from May up until the attempted coup, which Turkish authorities blamed on what they call the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO).<\/p>\n<p>Washington later dismissed accusations that Campbell was the mastermind behind the coup, with White House press secretary Josh Earnest calling the allegations against the general unsubstantiated.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, cooperation between the Turkish and American militaries has reportedly returned to pre-coup level, Anadolu Agency reported.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOperations have in almost all manners returned to normal in terms of the operations we&#8217;re conducting from Turkey,\u201d<\/em>Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford told reporters at the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s Gen.
