{"id":43923,"date":"2016-07-21T07:04:55","date_gmt":"2016-07-21T11:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=43923"},"modified":"2016-07-21T07:04:55","modified_gmt":"2016-07-21T11:04:55","slug":"milo-yiannopoulos-banned-from-twitter-which-highlights-double-standards-of-the-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=43923","title":{"rendered":"Milo Yiannopoulos banned from Twitter, which highlights double standards of the platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Matthew Dunn<br \/>\nNews.com.au<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-intro\">\n<p><strong>Opinion<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>THIS week Twitter banned an outspoken conservative and Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos for calling actress Leslie Jones a \u201cblack dude\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While the 32-year-old has developed a reputation for testing the boundaries as the voice of a growing anti-feminist, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2016\/03\/29\/an-establishment-conservatives-guide-to-the-alt-right\/\" shape=\"rect\">alt-right<\/a>\u201d movement, Twitter\u2019s permanent suspension of Yiannopoulos is a ridiculous and unjustified decision, which will initiate a major war over free speech.<\/p>\n<p>So what did the openly gay, Trump-loving conservative do to become the world\u2019s most hated man on Twitter?<\/p>\n<p>That is a long and complicated answer for a person well-known for acting as a free speech provocateur, exploiting the nexus of politics, technology and social justice issues.<\/p>\n<p>He is no stranger to testing the boundaries of Twitter\u2019s code of conduct, with the social media platform removing his verification status after a string of inflammatory behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>The latest came during a week where Leslie Jones\u2019 Twitter account was hit with racist comments and hateful memes related to her role in the new all-female<i>Ghostbusters<\/i> film.<\/p>\n<p>The barrage of abuse led to the actor closing her account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s*** I got today \u2026 wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Milo wrote a seething review for the new movie, which was accompanied with a tweet suggesting she wasn\u2019t able to cop criticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf at first you don\u2019t succeed (because you\u2019re work is terrible), play the victim. Everyone gets hate mail FFS,\u201d the tweet read.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Jones blocked Milo on Twitter, which led him posting a tweet to his 338,000 followers saying he has been \u201crejected by yet another black dude\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"module image-module module-image-650w366h\">\n<div class=\"module-content\">\n<div class=\"image-block image-650w366h\">\n<div class=\"image-frame\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.newsapi.com.au\/image\/v1\/4068811582ab94fae20f750d91c1204a\" alt=\"The tweet that was the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back.\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption-text\">The tweet that was the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back.<\/span><span class=\"image-source\"><em>Source:<\/em>Supplied<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Following his public dispute with Ms Jones, legions of Milo\u2019s followers direct abusive tweets at the actor \u2014 although he emphatically denies telling his fans to attack her.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, the string of hate captured the attention of Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey.<\/p>\n<p>He reached out Ms Jones and asked her to follow him so they could communicate privately, which resulted in Milo being banned soon after.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a public statement, Twitter contacted Milo by email to inform him of the ban.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour account has been permanently suspended for repeated violation of the Twitter rules, specifically our rules participating in or inciting targeted abuse of individuals,\u201d the email read, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/milo\/2016\/07\/19\/breaking-milo-suspended-twitter-20-minutes-party\/\" shape=\"rect\">reports<\/a><i>Breitbart<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that you have previously received repeated warnings for similar violations, your account will not be restored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the abuse directed at Ms Jones is out of bounds and Milo\u2019s own contributions questionable, banning him from Twitter is ludicrous and pointless given the sheer amount of trolls left to operate on the service.<\/p>\n<div class=\"module image-module module-image-650w366h\">\n<div class=\"module-content\">\n<div class=\"image-block image-650w366h\">\n<div class=\"image-frame\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.newsapi.com.au\/image\/v1\/8c6ea62ce54f1960527382a8384900e5\" alt=\"Leslie Jones has been responsible for her own racist tweets.\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><\/div>\n<p class=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption-text\">Leslie Jones has been responsible for her own racist tweets.<\/span><span class=\"image-source\"><em>Source:<\/em>AP<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a statement, Milo said Twitter had confirmed itself as a safe space for Muslim terrorists and Black Lives Matter extremists, but believed it didn\u2019t welcome conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter has suspended me without evidence of wrongdoing and without explanation while allowing the most appalling abuses to continue on its platform,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/milo\/2016\/07\/19\/breaking-milo-suspended-twitter-20-minutes-party\/\" shape=\"rect\">he told<\/a><i>Breitbart.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need to break the terms of service to point out the mendacious hypocrisy of the left on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwitter is intent on protecting free speech, as long as you are a Hollywood actor who bravely tweets about white people, or a New York globalist advocating for violence against Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy suspension has made one thing clear \u2014 Twitter doesn\u2019t stand for free speech.
