{"id":43302,"date":"2016-07-14T17:16:14","date_gmt":"2016-07-14T21:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=43302"},"modified":"2016-07-14T17:16:14","modified_gmt":"2016-07-14T21:16:14","slug":"eight-burned-bodies-found-in-region-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=43302","title":{"rendered":"Eight burned bodies found in region this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Sean Lahman and Gary Craig<br \/>\nThe Democrat &amp; Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>For the second time this week and the eighth time this year, police in the Rochester region\u00a0discovered\u00a0a body that had been set on fire\u00a0\u2014 and all of the crimes remain unsolved.<\/p>\n<p>Officials from various police agencies have said\u00a0they have found no evidence to suggest the cases are linked, but the number\u00a0of cases itself is unusual:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>On Wednesday morning, Rochester police were investigating\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2016\/07\/06\/authorities-investigate-near-la-grange-park\/86742432\/\">a body found in a west side park<\/a>\u00a0which appeared to have been set on fire.<\/li>\n<li>A day earlier, New York State Police said passers-by spotted\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2016\/07\/05\/burned-body-found-caledonia-road\/86707280\/\">a burning body on the side of Lacey Road in Caledonia, Livingston County<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Livingston County deputies found\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2016\/05\/11\/dead-body-found-burned-vehicle\/84245410\/\">a body in a burning vehicle on state-owned\u00a0land<\/a>\u00a0near Union Corners Road in West Sparta in May.<\/li>\n<li>Macedon Center firefighters found a body in a burning car on an access road near the Erie Canal in February.<\/li>\n<li>Rochester firefighters in January discovered the bodies of four individuals on the third floor of a Leighton Avenue home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>None of the eight burned body cases this year have resulted in an arrest. One case, the death in West Sparta, was later ruled accidental, according to Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the gruesome discovery brought Rochester police\u00a0and city firefighters to a wooded area near some basketball courts inside La Grange Park.<\/p>\n<p>Rochester Police Investigator Frank Camp said a passer-by found a human body that &#8220;appeared to have been on fire&#8221;\u00a0about 6:20 a.m. Wednesday at the park.<\/p>\n<p>Camp said authorities determined that the person was dead, but details about the individual\u2019s gender, age or identity were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are in the beginning stages of our investigation,&#8221;\u00a0Camp said. &#8220;This will be a slow and methodical process, so we ask for some patience here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>State police, who were also called to the Rochester scene,\u00a0said a passer-by spotted a burning body Monday night on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2016\/07\/05\/burned-body-found-caledonia-road\/86707280\/\">side of Lacey Road in Caledonia, Livingston County.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As of late Wednesday afternoon, police had released no more details about either discovery.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, other cases\u00a0remain mysteries.<\/p>\n<p>Rochester police have not announced a cause of death for the Leighton Avenue victims, but their names\u00a0were\u00a0included on a list of\u00a0shooting victims that police later provided to the\u00a0<em>Democrat and Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Several earlier burned body cases remain unsolved, as well.\u00a0Rochester police have not made an arrest in the 2011 death of 72-year-old Louis Dash, whose badly burned body\u00a0was found in the trunk of his car in Genesee Valley Park.<\/p>\n<p>The October 2010 homicide of a Rochester woman, Amelia Rivera-Castoire,\u00a0who was found\u00a0burned in rural Ontario County, remains unsolved,\u00a0Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The burning body of Rivera-Castoire, 33, was found in a ditch along Pierpont Road. Police were not sure how she died or how long she was in the ditch before she was spotted. She was last seen in Rochester, about five hours before her body was found. She was eight months pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0an active, ongoing investigation,&#8221; said Povero,\u00a0declining to provide details.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the two recent instances of burned bodies being discovered,\u00a0he said there was nothing in hand\u00a0&#8220;at this moment&#8221; to establish a connection to other cases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2016\/05\/11\/dead-body-found-burned-vehicle\/84245410\/\">\u25ba\u00a0Dead body found in burned vehicle<\/a>\u00a0(May 2016)<\/p>\n<p>Forensic experts say that arson as a means of concealing a crime is neither common nor particularly effective. Some criminals mistakenly believe that a fire will reduce a body to ash. While these types of\u00a0fires may leave a body charred on the outside,\u00a0they typically don&#8217;t get hot enough or burn long enough to cause more than superficial damage.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"presto-h5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2016\/01\/12\/leighton-street-fire-homicide\/78682020\/\">\u25ba\u00a0Fire was likely set to hide four murders<\/a>\u00a0(January 2016)<\/h5>\n<p>Dr. Mary Jumbelic, a forensic pathologist who served as Onondaga County&#8217;s chief medical examiner from 1998 until 2009, said that even when a person&#8217;s\u00a0body is badly burned on the outside, evidence within the body can remain intact. Tissue samples and blood tests can help a medical examiner determine the cause of death, and dental records or medical devices \u2014\u00a0such as an artificial knee\u00a0\u2014\u00a0will remain to aid in identification.<\/p>\n<p>Dental records often provide a route to identification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe teeth really are there unless it was over 1,600 degrees for over 45 minutes,\u201d said local dentist\u00a0Dr. Neil Goldstein, who previously provided forensics work for the Monroe County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office. \u201c\u2026 The molars usually are in pretty good shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using a dental comparison,\u00a0Goldstein once confirmed the identity of\u00a0a man whose body was badly burned in the crash-landing of\u00a0a small plane.<\/p>\n<p>First, however, investigators will need to determine just who the burned individuals could be, whether from missing person records or clues found with the bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless they have an inkling of who the person was before the fire, it gets very, very difficult,\u201d Goldstein said.<\/p>\n<p>If police have a clue who the victim is, then DNA provides another identification tool, said Dr. Elayne Pope, a Virginia-based\u00a0forensics anthropologist who specializes in the analysis of burned human remains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can compare that to any family member,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, the victims are identified, Pope said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Usually with good police work they come up with an identification,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"presto-h3\"><span class=\"print_subhead\"><strong>Local arson-murder cases<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There have been a handful\u00a0cases in the Rochester area of fires being set to conceal homicides before this year. This list does not include homicide by arson, which is considered a different category of\u00a0arson:<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 8, 2014<\/strong><br \/>\nWinnie Butler&#8217;s body was found inside her daughter&#8217;s apartment at 294 Fernwood Ave.\u00a0after a fire there was put out. Butler&#8217;s grandson\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/2014\/07\/10\/man-charged-in-fire-that-killed-grandmother\/12470261\/\">Donkish Lesane, 22, was accused of killing her and then setting a fire to conceal the crime.<\/a>\u00a0Butler, 52, was babysitting four of her grandchildren at the time. Police say her brother, William Spengler, shot her before setting fire to the house and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.democratandchronicle.com\/story\/news\/local\/2013\/12\/23\/a-reporters-memories-of-the-webster-ambush\/4183137\/\">ambushing firefighters who responded.<\/a>\u00a0Spengler shot and killed two West Webster firefighters and injured two others\u00a0before killing himself. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found Louis Dash&#8217;s badly burned body in the trunk. Officers said the 72-year-old man was dead before the car fire started.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oct. 23, 2010<\/strong><br \/>\nThe burning body of Amelia Rivera-Castoire, 33, of Rochester, was found in a ditch along Pierpont Road in Ontario County. She was eight months pregnant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sept. 13, 2008<\/strong><br \/>\nPolice say Rose Kinsella was killed by her husband, James Kinsella, sometime over the weekend of Sept. 13, 2008. On Monday, Sept. 15, James Kinsella doused their home with gasoline and started a fire with a lighter. Shortly after that he shot himself in the head in a front room of the house. Gasoline vapors fed an explosion strong enough to blow the front wall out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 20, 2007<\/strong><br \/>\nKatharina Lawn, 54,\u00a0was found inside the burning Merchants Road apartment where she&#8217;d lived for 12 years. She had been violently beaten and strangled.\u00a0Her former neighbor, Darrell Boyd, was convicted of killing her as revenge for her having reported a domestic violence incident that sent him to state prison. Boyd was convicted of second-degree murder in 2007 and sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug. 1,\u00a02002<\/strong><br \/>\nFirefighters found the bodies of Clara Sconiers, 46, and Thomas Reed, 50, inside a burning house on First Street.\u00a0Both had\u00a0been beaten to death. A jury convicted Teddy Pierre of the crime in 2003, but he was acquitted after a 2014 retrial.
