However, the signatories may learn that petitions don\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/petitions.whitehouse.gov\/petition\/formally-recognize-black-lives-matter-terrorist-organization\">petition<\/a>\u00a0seeking to classify the civil rights organization Black Lives Matter as a terrorist outfit has exceeded 100,000 signatures on the White House\u2019s petition center, We the People. Any initiative that receives at least 100,000 signatures is placed on a list of pending petitions to which the administration must respond within 60 days.<\/p>\n<p>The author of the petition, known only as Y.S., created the petition a day after Alton Sterling was killed by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the same day that Philando Castile was shot during a traffic stop in a St. Paul, Minnesota suburb.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Over 100 arrests made nationwide in Black Lives Matter protests <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/dEomYz0TcV\">https:\/\/t.co\/dEomYz0TcV<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rygq2HBnDG\">pic.twitter.com\/rygq2HBnDG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RT America (@RT_America) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RT_America\/status\/751934889675677696?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 10, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>However, what may have helped the petition truly gain speed was an attack on police officers in Dallas, Texas the following evening.<\/p>\n<p>The murder of five law enforcement officers and wounding of six others, plus two civilians, has cast a harsh light on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. The shooter, Micah Johnson, had no direct affiliation with the group and had been blacklisted from several black-power groups due to his history of sexual harassment and emotional instability, the Daily Beast <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2016\/07\/11\/micah-johnson-was-blacklisted-by-black-power-groups-as-unstable.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of a direct connection to the BLM has yet to stop many people from assuming that the African-American shooter was a member of the movement. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick placed the blame for the attacks on the shoulders of the BLM, saying, \u201c<em>I do blame former Black Lives Matter protests.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The petition reads, \u201c<em>terrorism [sic] is defined as \u2018the use of violence and intimidation in pursuit of political aims\u2019. [sic]<\/em>\u201d and adds, \u201c<em>This definition is the same definition used to declare ISIS and other groups, as terrorist organizations.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The justification for being on the same level as the Islamic State comes from \u201c<em>its actions in Ferguson, Baltimore, and even at a Bernie Sanders rally, as well as all over the United States and Canada.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Tear gas, 102 arrested, 21 cops injured in Black Lives Matter protests in St. Paul (VIDEO) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6fjuLH2b0r\">https:\/\/t.co\/6fjuLH2b0r<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VtTomANtHK\">pic.twitter.com\/VtTomANtHK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RT America (@RT_America) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RT_America\/status\/752173941293248512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 10, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Although the petition has gained notoriety across the internet from both supporters and opponents, there is a strong chance that the Obama administration may not respond within the standard 60-day period.<\/p>\n<p>Many petitions, such as one to pardon whistleblower Edward Snowden, end up, as one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/new-white-house-petition-demands-the-white-house-actually-answer-white-house-petitions\/\">2014 petition<\/a>\u00a0to request the White House answer petitions did, unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>The logistics of classifying BLM as a terrorist organization may not be as simple as it seems. Given that BLM does not have a centralized command base and seeks to encourage reform over revolution, the chances of it being elevated to the levels of IS are slim.<\/p>\n<p>Reynaldo Anderson, associate professor of communications at Harris-Stowe State University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/metro\/online-petition-calls-for-government-to-declare-black-lives-matter\/article_3a81ced6-6f4f-5f33-a653-87f122aeae99.html\">told<\/a>\u00a0St. Louis Today that comparing BLM to a terrorist group is &#8220;<em>not only unwarranted.
