{"id":39901,"date":"2016-06-10T07:26:50","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T11:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=39901"},"modified":"2016-06-10T07:26:50","modified_gmt":"2016-06-10T11:26:50","slug":"oklahoma-highway-patrol-now-steals-money-from-innocent-motorists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=39901","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma Highway Patrol Now Steals Money From Innocent Motorists"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>OHP Uses New Device To Seize Money During Traffic Stops<\/h1>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"WNStoryHeader\">\n<div id=\"WNStoryByline\" class=\"bylines wn-row\">\n<h4 class=\"byline wn-row\"><span class=\"author\">BY AARON BRILBECK, NEWS 9<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mainStoryPhoto\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"[File Photo]\" src=\"http:\/\/kwtv.images.worldnow.com\/images\/4396705_G.jpg\" alt=\"[File Photo]\" width=\"640\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<div id=\"ndn-video-player-top\" class=\"ndn_embed ndn_embedding ndn_embedContainer ndn-widget-embed-1 ndn_embedded\" data-config-width=\"100%\" data-config-height=\"9\/16w\" data-config-distributor-id=\"92487\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"WNStoryBody\" class=\" withRelated right\">\n<p>OKLAHOMA CITY &#8211;\u00a0 You may have heard of civil asset forfeiture.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s where police can seize property and cash without first proving a person committed a crime; without a warrant and without arresting them, as long as they suspect that the\u00a0property is somehow tied to a crime.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a device that also allows them to seize money on prepaid cards.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s called an ERAD, or Electronic Recovery and Access to Data machine, and OHP began using 16\u00a0of them last month.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how it works.\u00a0If a trooper suspects a person\u00a0may have money tied to some type of crime, the highway patrol can scan and\u00a0seize money from prepaid cards. \u00a0OHP stresses troopers do not do\u00a0this during all traffic stops, only situations where they believe there is probable cause.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re gonna look for different factors in the way that you&#8217;re acting,\u201d Oklahoma Highway Patrol\u00a0Lt. John Vincent said. \u201cWe&#8217;re gonna look for if there&#8217;s a difference in your story.\u00a0If there&#8217;s someway that we can prove that you&#8217;re falsifying information to us about your business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Troopers insist this isn&#8217;t just about seizing cash.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know that a lot of people are just going to focus on the seizing money.\u00a0That&#8217;s a very small thing that&#8217; s happening now.\u00a0The largest part that we have found &#8230; the biggest benefit has been the identity theft,&#8221;\u00a0Vincent said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you can prove can prove that you have a legitimate reason to have that money it will be given back to you.\u00a0And we&#8217;ve done that in the past,&#8221; Vincent said about\u00a0any money seized.<\/p>\n<p>State Sen.
