The mandate has been extremely controversial, affecting all public schools and most colleges and universities that are federally funded.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: Obama administration issuing mandate that all public schools allow transgender students to use bathrooms matching their gender identity<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; ABC News Politics (@ABCPolitics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABCPolitics\/status\/730939658587230210?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 13, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>At the Texas State GOP convention, lawmakers and prominent Republicans are standing up to the new mandate.\u00a0Just hours after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/obama-administration-to-instruct-schools-to-accommodate-transgender-students\/2016\/05\/12\/0ed1c50e-18ab-11e6-aa55-670cabef46e0_story.html?hpid=hp_rhp-top-table-main_transgender-1025pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\">new directive<\/a>\u00a0was sent to all public schools across the country Friday,\u00a0Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick offered a doomsday outlook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Obama, in the dark of the night \u2013 without consulting Congress, without consulting educators, without consulting parents \u2013 decides to issue an executive order, like this superintendent, forcing transgender policies on schools and on parents who clearly don\u2019t want it,\u201d Patrick told NBC 5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be the beginning of the end of the public school system as we know it,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/politics\/Gov-Greg-Abbott-Lt-Gov-Dan-Patrick-to-Speak-at-GOP-Convention-in-Dallas-379193041.html?utm_campaign=Contact+SNS+For+More+Referrer&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_source=snsanalytics\">he told NBC 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released a tweet saying President Obama is \u201cnot a king.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I announced today that Texas is fighting this. Obama can&#39;t rewrite the Civil Rights Act. He&#39;s not a King. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/tcot?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#tcot<\/a>    <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vDgfQPZXjR\">https:\/\/t.co\/vDgfQPZXjR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GregAbbott_TX\/status\/730968042281144320?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 13, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got news for President Barack Obama,\u201d Port Neches-Groves (Texas) Superintendent Rodney Canvass told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.12newsnow.com\/story\/31963679\/pn-g-isd-superintendent-on-obama-admins-transgender-letter-its-going-in-the-paper-shredder\">12News. <\/a>\u201cHe ain\u2019t my President and he can\u2019t tell me what to do. <strong>That letter is going straight to the paper shredder.<\/strong> I have 5 daughters myself and I have 2,500 girls in my protection. Their moms and dads expect me to protect them. And that is what I am going to do. Now I don\u2019t want them bullied\u2026 but there are accommodations that can be made short of this. He is destroying the very fiber of this country. He is not a leader. He is a failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The result of the Obama administration\u2019s efforts will be a long court battle between the states and the federal government.\u00a0North Carolina officials <a href=\"http:\/\/hypeline.org\/north-carolina-sues-justice-department\/\">have already filed a lawsuit<\/a> over withholding federal funding over transgender bathrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Several notable Republicans across the country are joining Texas and North Carolina in fighting the federal mandate on public schools. For example,\u00a0Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) issued\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/BenSasse\/status\/730955913369145344\" shape=\"rect\">a tweet<\/a> from his personal account: \u201cIs there any issue the Obama Administration believes can be left to state and local government?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, the battle proceeds to the federal courts to decide if the Obama administration\u2019s actions are legal.
