{"id":38125,"date":"2016-05-15T18:07:51","date_gmt":"2016-05-15T22:07:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=38125"},"modified":"2016-05-15T18:09:56","modified_gmt":"2016-05-15T22:09:56","slug":"38125","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=38125","title":{"rendered":"Students &#038; faculty protest \u2018war criminal\u2019 Madeleine Albright commencement speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->RT.com<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/57378f91c461880d358b456f.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38128\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/57378f91c461880d358b456f.jpg\" alt=\"57378f91c461880d358b456f\" width=\"650\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/57378f91c461880d358b456f.jpg 900w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/57378f91c461880d358b456f-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/57378f91c461880d358b456f-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"article__summary summary \">Scripps College students and faculty are protesting former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, saying they are outraged that a \u201cwar criminal\u201d is headlining a graduation ceremony.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article__text text \">\n<p>A number of staff members at the small liberal arts college have refused to sit on the same stage as the former diplomat during Saturday\u2019s ceremony as a sign of protest.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty members published a <a href=\"http:\/\/tsl.news\/opinions\/5757\/\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a>\u00a0in the college newspaper citing the reasons they are <em>\u201coutraged,\u201d<\/em> focusing on Albright\u2019s long record as secretary of state and US ambassador to the UN, where she shaped policy that saw the US intervene in many disastrous overseas conflicts and <em>\u201csupported several policies that led to the deaths of millions of people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Scripps is an all-female college with less than 2,000 students, and Albright\u2019s almost-threatening comments about there being<em> \u201ca special place in hell\u201d<\/em> for women who don\u2019t vote for Hillary Clinton did not sit well with students or faculty either.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs a women\u2019s liberal arts college, we should promote the advancement of women and transgender peoples broadly and not simply emulate and celebrate those individuals who participate in US state power and wield its violence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What the faculty members were most offended by were Albright\u2019s now infamous comments in which she argued that the deaths of more than half a million Iraqi students had been <em>\u201cworth it.\u201d<\/em> The teachers pointed to the fact that <em>\u201cmore Iraqis died as a result of 13 years of US-led and controlled sanctions than as a result of the 2003 US invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A deliberate decision to allow the 1994 Rwandan genocide to take place and the decision to bomb Yugoslavia for refusing to permit a US occupation were just two examples they cited in justifying their objections to her as the school\u2019s commencement speaker.<\/p>\n<p>However, Albright told the LA Times that the students <em>\u201chave a duty to listen to people that they might disagree with,\u201d<\/em>before falling back on the feminist card. <em>\u201cThere\u2019s plenty of room in the world for mediocre men, there\u2019s none for mediocre women,\u201d<\/em> she lamented.<\/p>\n<p>Albright is also booked to speak at Harvard\u2019s JFK School of Government and the University of Denver\u2019s graduation ceremonies, but has not been met with objections from faculty or students at those educational institutions, the LA Times says.<\/p>\n<p>However, in April, Syracuse students protested Albright when she gave an Ethics lecture, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/972164922898799\/\" target=\"_blank\">describing<\/a>\u00a0the decision to invite her as <em>\u201can absolute insult to the meaning of \u2018ethics.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/twitter.com\/Rubiconski\/status\/718345806105985025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw<\/p>\n<p>Other speakers have been forced to pull out of college speeches as well. Smith College objected to IMF leader Christine Lagarde as commencement speaker due to the International Monetary Fund\u2019s role in <em>\u201cstrengthening of imperialist and patriarchal systems that oppress and abuse women worldwide.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another former secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.universityherald.com\/articles\/7875\/20140303\/rutgers-faculty-rejects-condoleeza-rice-as-commencement-speaker-school-sticks-with-decision.htm\" target=\"_blank\">rejected<\/a>\u00a0by Rutgers students in 2014 because of the part she played in the Iraq War. Rice was set to pocket $35,000 for the gig, LAT <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/hiltzik\/la-fi-mh-the-commencement-speaker-20140514-column.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Graduation school speeches can set colleges back over $100,000, but Scripps only covers travel fees. Other<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/3910856\/commencement-speaker-fees\/\" target=\"_blank\">colleges<\/a>\u00a0have been criticized for spending obscene amounts of money on speakers ranging from reality stars to politicians.
