Larry Wilmore Roasts the Press in White House Correspondents\u2019 Monologue<\/h1>\n

President Obama was a tough act to follow, but Wilmore reminded some of Stephen Colbert with his audience-unfriendly jokes.<\/p>\n

Tonight, Larry Wilmore proved exactly why he was the perfect choice to host<\/a> President Barack Obama\u2019s final White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner. Even if the crowd of journalists in attendance didn\u2019t seem to agree.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

More than ever before, the president was an impossible act to follow. Not only did Obama deliver a slew of jokes at Donald Trump\u2019s expense<\/a> but he also presented an elaborateCurb Your Enthusiasm<\/i>-style video that included an epic John Boehner cameo.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Wilmore began by welcoming the guests in the house once again to the event, \u201cor as Fox News will report, two thugs disrupt elegant dinner in D.C.\u201d\u00a0 He introduced himself as \u201ca black man who replaced a white man who pretended to be a TV newscaster,\u201d before adding, \u201cso yeah, in that way Lester Holt and I have a lot in common,\u201d to groans from the crowd at Brian Williams\u2019s expense.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He was even more harsh to CNN\u2019s Wolf Blitzer, saying, \u201cHey, Wolf, I\u2019m ready to project tonight\u2019s winner: Anyone who isn\u2019t watching The Situation Room<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

As promised, Wilmore did not hold back on Obama either, remarking that it makes sense that he was hanging out with Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry recently \u201cbecause both of you like raining down bombs on people from long distances.\u201d Pivoting to Obama\u2019s aging appearance, Wilmore borrowed a theme from Joel McHale\u2019s speech<\/a> two years earlier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYour hair is so white, it tried to punch me at a Trump rally,\u201d Wilmore joked. \u201cThe president\u2019s hair is so white it keeps saying \u2018All Lives Matter.\u2019\u201d Then, he added, \u201cAll I\u2019m saying is that in less than eight years, Mr. President, you’ve busted two time-honored stereotypes, black does crack, and apparently once you go black, it looks like we are going back. Thanks, Ben Carson.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Wilmore continued to elicit groans from the crowd, not unlike the ones Stephen Colbert received during his scathing monologue at George W. Bush\u2019s expense<\/a> 10 years ago. But this time, it was Wilmore\u2019s criticism of the media that seemed to burn most from the audience of journalists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He noted that MSNBC \u201cactually now stands for \u2018missing a significant number of black correspondents.\u2019\u201d after letting go of Melissa Harris Perry and canceling Joy Reid\u2019s show. \u201cThey put Chris Hayes on probation because they thought he was related to Isaac Hayes,\u201d Wilmore joked. \u201cMSNBC got rid of so many black people I thought Boko Haram was running the network.\u201d He also gave a shout-out to some of \u201cAmerica’s finest black journalists\u201d in the house. \u201cDon Lemon is here, too,\u201d he added, prompting the CNN host to flip him the bird on camera.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another bit that that drew groans was Wilmore\u2019s take on Ben Carson praising \u201ctremendous president\u201d Andrew Jackson, who is about to be replaced by Harriet Tubman on the $20. \u201cFrom the grave, Andrew Jackson said, \u2018What did that jiggaboo say?\u2019\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He did better when he started going in on the Republican presidential candidates toward the end of his speech. \u201cChris Christie was supposed to be here tonight,\u201d Wilmore said. \u201cI don\u2019t know if he made it. He RSVP\u2019ed for three: him, his wife, and Donald Trump\u2019s dry-cleaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cFrankly, Donald Trump, his campaign is inspiring,\u201d he said, pausing for effect. \u201cMass violence. And whenever I turn on the TV, I see Trump\u2019s family campaigning for him, gushing all over him. Or as it\u2019s also known, as Morning Joe.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n

An extended riff on the Ted Cruz \/ Zodiac killer rumors did not play as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If the uneven reception was affecting Wilmore, he didn\u2019t let it show, powering through to the end when he decided to turn serious for a moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAll jokes aside, let me just say how much it means for me to be here tonight,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve always joked that I voted for the president because he\u2019s black.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cBut behind that joke is the humble appreciation for the historical implications for what your presidency means,\u201d Wilmore added. \u201cWhen I was a kid, I lived in a country where people couldn\u2019t accept a black quarterback. Now think about that. A black man was thought by his mere color not good enough to lead a football team. And now to live in your time, Mr. President, when a black man can lead the entire free world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWords alone do me no justice,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, Mr. President, if I\u2019m going to keep it 100,\u201d Wilmore said, before pounding his chest. \u201cYo, Barry, you did it, my nigga!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It is not hard to predict how that line will play on Fox News next week.<\/p>\n
