{"id":35501,"date":"2016-04-10T19:21:37","date_gmt":"2016-04-10T23:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=35501"},"modified":"2016-04-10T21:10:19","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T01:10:19","slug":"60-minutes-to-report-on-28-pages-said-to-link-911-saudi-arabia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=35501","title":{"rendered":"60 Minutes to Report on 28 Pages Said to Link 9\/11, Saudi Arabia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->Follow 28Pages.org<\/p>\n<p>The drive to declassify <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/faq\/\" target=\"_blank\">28 pages<\/a>\u00a0from a congressional intelligence inquiry that detail specific indications of foreign government support of the 9\/11 hijackers is about to be put under a powerful spotlight, as 60 Minutes will air a segment on the topic this Sunday, April 10 at 7 pm ET\/PT.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/top-secret-28-pages-may-hold-clues-about-saudi-support-for-911-hijackers\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBS News preview<\/a> of the story, Steve Kroft interviewed former senator Bob Graham, former congressman and CIA director Porter Goss, former 9\/11 Commission members Bob Kerrey and John Lehman, lawyers representing\u00a09\/11 family members <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2015\/10\/01\/judge-drops-saudi-arabia-from-911-suit-for-lack-of-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\">suing\u00a0Saudi Arabia<\/a> and former congressman Tim Roemer, who served on both the inquiry that produced the 28 pages and the 9\/11 Commission that followed that inquiry.<\/p>\n<h3>Report to Air\u00a0on Eve of Obama Visit to Saudi Arabia<\/h3>\n<p>The high-profile 60 Minutes segment\u2014which is positioned for high viewership as it follows coverage of the Masters Tournament\u2014comes at a particularly sensitive time for the White House, as the president will visit Saudi Arabia on April 21. 9\/11 family members say that, in 2009 and 2011, Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2014\/08\/18\/obamas-unkept-promise-to-911-families-declassifying-28-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\">assured them<\/a> he would declassify the 28 pages, yet\u00a0that promise has gone\u00a0unfulfilled.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_243\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" data-shortcode=\"caption\"><a href=\"http:\/\/28pagesdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/bob-graham.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-243\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-243\" src=\"http:\/\/28pagesdotorg.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/07\/bob-graham.png?w=246&amp;h=300\" alt=\"Former Senator Bob Graham\" width=\"246\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Former Senator Bob Graham<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Graham, who co-chaired the inquiry that wrote the 28 pages, has <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2015\/01\/11\/must-read-quotes-from-last-weeks-28-pages-press-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, \u201cThe 28 pages primarily relate to who financed 9\/11 and they point a very strong finger at Saudi Arabia as being the principal financier.\u201d He has also said that, by shielding Saudi Arabia from scrutiny of its sponsorship of Sunni extremism, the continued classification has encouraged their continued sponsorship and <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2014\/10\/12\/bob-graham-censoring-28-pages-paved-way-for-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\">paved the way<\/a> for the rise of ISIS.<\/p>\n<p>Congressman Thomas Massie\u00a0described\u00a0the experience of reading the pages as\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2014\/07\/17\/video-rep-massie-on-the-experience-of-reading-the-28-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\">shocking<\/a>\u201d and said, \u201cI had to stop every couple\u00a0pages and\u2026try to rearrange my understanding\u00a0of history. It challenges you to rethink everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Congressmen Walter Jones, Stephen Lynch and Massie are leading an effort in the U.S. House of Representatives to declassify the 28 pages: Their <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/hr-428\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Resolution 14<\/a>, which urges the president to declassify the material, has 41 cosponsors. A similar measure, <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/senate-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Bill 1471<\/a>, was <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2015\/06\/02\/rands-next-stand-declassifying-foreign-government-ties-to-911\/\" target=\"_blank\">introduced<\/a> by Senators Rand Paul and Ron Wyden and cosponsored by Kirsten Gillibrand.<\/p>\n<h3>Review of 28 Pages Nears Its Third Year<\/h3>\n<p>In response to <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2014\/09\/08\/cnns-jake-tapper-reports-on-the-28-pages\/\" target=\"_blank\">heightened media attention<\/a> to the 28 pages in September 2014, the White House said\u00a0the president, earlier that\u00a0summer, tasked Director of National Intelligence James Clapper with conducting an intelligence community review of the 28 pages for potential declassification.<\/p>\n<p>Inexplicably, and with essentially no follow-up by national media to date, that review of just 28 pages has already taken far longer than the entire, unprecedented congressional inquiry that produced them. As <a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2015\/09\/02\/odni-declassification-review-of-28-pages-enters-second-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">we reported here<\/a> last summer, in just six months the 2002\u00a0inquiry:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reviewed nearly a half <em>million<\/em>\u00a0pages of documents from intelligence agencies and other sources<\/li>\n<li>Conducted roughly 300 interviews<\/li>\n<li>Participated in briefings and panel discussions involving about\u00a0600 people from the\u00a0intelligence\u00a0community, other\u00a0government departments, state and local entities, foreign government representatives and other individuals<\/li>\n<li>Held 13 closed-door sessions and nine public hearings<\/li>\n<li>Dueled with intelligence agencies and the White House\u00a0over many aspects of the inquiry\u2019s undertaking, including requests for information and the format of the final report<\/li>\n<li>Wrote, edited and revised an\u00a0838-page report on the inquiry\u2019s findings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A separate evaluation, under a process called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/28pages.org\/2015\/01\/06\/federal-panel-evaluating-need-for-continued-28-pages-secrecy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mandatory Declassification Review<\/a>, was initiated in 2014 by an attorney representing investigative\u00a0journalists Dan Christensen, Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan.
