Vladimir Putin’s personal wealth has always been a source of speculation. So much so that when the Panama Papers scandal broke out on Sunday, everyone seemed to have focused on the only person not mentioned in more than 11.5 million documents leaked from the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca.<\/h2>\n

The latest figure provided in\u00a0the Panama leaks<\/a> places Putin’s wealth at\u00a0no less than $2 billion. Well, not Putin’s personal fortune, to\u00a0be exact. This is what a close friend of\u00a0the Russian president is alleged to\u00a0own. No direct links to\u00a0the Russian leader were offered.<\/p>\n

The $2 billion supposedly owned by\u00a0famed cellist Sergey Roldugin is surely not as\u00a0exciting as\u00a0the $40 billion Putin must be hiding in\u00a0his offshore coffers in\u00a0addition to\u00a0the super expensive yachts, palaces and Swiss watches. After all, the Russian president has often been claimed to\u00a0be one of\u00a0the richest men in\u00a0the world.The $40 billion estimate comes from\u00a0an unsubstantiated claim that Putin owns stakes in\u00a0three major oil and gas companies. It pales in\u00a0comparison with\u00a0the $200 billion that William Browder, the CEO of\u00a0investment fund Hermitage Capital Management, thinks Putin has. He told<\/a> CNN as\u00a0much in\u00a0February 2015. Browder, once a Putin supporter, was convicted of\u00a0tax evasion by\u00a0a Russian court and sentenced to\u00a010 years in\u00a0prison in\u00a0absentia.<\/p>\n

Putin himself confirmed that he was indeed the richest man in\u00a0the world in\u00a02008, but\u00a0it is not what you might think.<\/p>\n

“I am the wealthiest man not just in\u00a0Europe but\u00a0in the whole world. I collect emotions, I am wealthy in\u00a0that the people of\u00a0Russia have twice entrusted me with\u00a0the leadership of\u00a0a great nation such as\u00a0Russia \u2013 I believe that is my greatest wealth,” Bloomberg View quoted<\/a> Putin as\u00a0saying.<\/p>\n

On a more serious note, Vladimir Putin’s income is open to\u00a0the public. According to\u00a0documents published<\/a> by\u00a0the Kremlin in\u00a0April 2015, Putin’s annual income in\u00a02014 amounted to\u00a07,654,042 rubles (approximately $150,000). The Russian president also owns a 77-square-meter apartment, plot of\u00a0land, a garage and four cars.<\/p>\n

For comparison: US President Barack Obama is making $400,000 a year, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s salary is said<\/a> to\u00a0be approximately $230,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
