Apple is refusing to do so, and said that it is willing to take the fight to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Apple\u2019s top lawyer faces off with FBI chief at House hearing on encryption <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NjEKhL2ysI\">https:\/\/t.co\/NjEKhL2ysI<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AppleVsFBI?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AppleVsFBI<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QWLrYDNWV2\">pic.twitter.com\/QWLrYDNWV2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RT America (@RT_America) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RT_America\/status\/704761984311406592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 1, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Over a video link appearance at Blueprint for a Great Democracy conference on Tuesday, Snowden took Apple\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe FBI says Apple has the \u2018exclusive technical means\u2019 to unlock the phone,\u201d<\/em> Snowden\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/cJ6PpX6xg-E?t=30m9s\">told<\/a> the audience from Moscow. <em>\u201cRespectfully, that\u2019s horse sh*t.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Snowden later tweeted a link to an American Civil Liberties Union blog post titled<em> \u201cOne of the FBI\u2019s Major Claims in the iPhone Case Is Fraudulent,\u201d<\/em> which argues that the government doesn\u2019t actually need Apple\u2019s help to bypass the <em>\u201cauto-erase\u201d<\/em> feature on the iPhone in question.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rtcode\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UITZVlxCBJg\" width=\"854\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>This sentiment echoes that of many tech experts, as well as some lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>At a hearing last week, Representative Darrell Issa, a California Republican who made his fortune in electronic car alarms, asked FBI Director James Comey if he considered the possibility of creating enough copies of the phone\u2019s data to try hundreds of passwords. Apple likely wouldn\u2019t have objected to this simple method, and the FBI couldn\u2019t answer why they didn\u2019t consider it.<\/p>\n<p>Comey also acknowledged that the FBI made the mistake of changing the iCloud password on Farook\u2019s account, security researcher Jonathan Zdziarski wrote in a blog post.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn other words, the mistake of trying to break into the safe caused the safe to lock down in a way that made it more difficult to get evidence out of it,\u201d<\/em> Zdziarski said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Snowden?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Snowden<\/a>: The FBI says Apple has the exclusive technical means to unlock the iPhone. &quot;Respectfully, that&#39;s bullshit.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jenna McLaughlin (@JennaMC_Laugh) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JennaMC_Laugh\/status\/707296648351850498?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Snowden has previously applauded Apple for its defense of privacy and strong encryption, even before their current battle with the FBI.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe should support vendors who are willing to [say], \u2018You know, just because it\u2019s popular to collect everybody\u2019s information and resell it to advertisers and whatever, it\u2019s going to serve our reputation, it\u2019s going to serve our relationship with our customers, and it\u2019s going to serve society better.
