He plans to pay his respects to Justice Antonin Scalia on Friday at the Supreme Court, but will not attend his funeral on Saturday.<\/span> <span class=\"credit\"> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Credit<\/span> Zach Gibson\/The New York Times <\/span> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"317\" data-total-count=\"317\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The White House on Thursday tried to fend off criticism of <a title=\"More articles about Barack Obama\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/o\/barack_obama\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">President Obama<\/a>\u2019s decision not to attend the funeral this weekend of Justice <a title=\"More articles about Antonin Scalia.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/s\/antonin_scalia\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Antonin Scalia<\/a>, but even some administration allies lamented the move as a missed opportunity to ease the partisan warfare that has followed the justice\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"426\" data-total-count=\"743\">Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, will pay their respects by visiting the <a title=\"More articles about the U.S. Supreme Court.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/s\/supreme_court\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Supreme Court<\/a> on Friday, when <a class=\"meta-per\" title=\"More articles about Antonin Scalia.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/s\/antonin_scalia\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Justice Scalia<\/a> will lie in repose in the Great Hall. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., who is Catholic \u2014 as was Justice Scalia \u2014 and had a personal relationship with him and his family, will attend the funeral on Saturday at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception along with his wife, Jill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"242\" data-total-count=\"985\">Facing questions again on Thursday about the decision, Josh Earnest, the White House press secretary, did not offer a direct answer but implied that one reason was the potential for the extensive presidential security detail to be disruptive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"390\" data-total-count=\"1375\">\u201cObviously, when the vice president travels to some place, his security footprint is at least a little bit lighter,\u201d Mr. Earnest said. \u201cBut given his personal relationship with the family and given the president\u2019s desire to find a respectful way to pay tribute to Justice Scalia\u2019s service to the country, we believe we have settled on an appropriate and respectful arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"284\" data-total-count=\"1659\">Administration officials were stung by what they saw as an unfair attack on what they viewed as Mr. Obama\u2019s dignified and respectful reaction to Justice Scalia\u2019s death, a reaction they thought contrasted sharply with that of others in Washington who quickly politicized the loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"203\" data-total-count=\"1862\">Mr. Obama has repeatedly expressed condolences to Justice Scalia\u2019s family and, while acknowledging their differences, praised him as \u201csomebody who made enormous contributions to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"409\" data-total-count=\"2271\">\u201cSome people actually want to use the funeral of the <a class=\"meta-org\" title=\"More articles about the U.S. Supreme Court.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/s\/supreme_court\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">Supreme Court<\/a> justice as some sort of political cudgel,\u201d Mr. Earnest said. \u201cThe president doesn\u2019t think that that\u2019s appropriate, and, in fact, what the president thinks is appropriate is respectfully paying tribute to high-profile patriotic American citizens even when you don\u2019t agree on all the issues. And that\u2019s what he\u2019s going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"134\" data-total-count=\"2405\">Still, some supporters of the administration saw Mr. Obama\u2019s decision as another reflection of the capital\u2019s deep partisan divide.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"338\" data-total-count=\"2743\">\u201cI feel like there ought to be a more respectful relationship between the political parties,\u201d said Steven Rattner, a financier who led the restructuring of the auto industry in 2009 as counselor to the Treasury secretary in the Obama administration. \u201cThat goes for political campaigns, legislative efforts and attending funerals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"3049\">But Ed Whelan, the president of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, who once clerked for Justice Scalia and shares the same faith, said that Mr. Obama made the right decision.
