Buchanan has been credited with\u00a0presaging the revolt which has manifested itself in the 2016 election and for correctly predicting the consequences of mass migration, ideological free trade, and military adventurism \u2014 predictions which were largely dismissed at the time he made them.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Trump seemed to scandalize the collective consciousness\u00a0of professional Republicans with his Saturday debate performance in which he launched a full-throated assault on Bush Republicanism. Trump repudiated all three pillars of Republican globalism: namely, military adventurism, immigration multiculturalism, and trade globalism.<\/p>\n<div class=\"crtvwrapper\">\n<p><span class=\"scoreregex\" data-govtrackid=\"412491\" data-title=\"Sen\" data-first=\"Marco\" data-last=\"Rubio\" data-party=\"R\" data-state=\"FL\" data-grade=\"C\" data-average=\"79\" data-link=\"marco-rubio\/?utm_campaign=breitbartapi&amp;utm_medium=api&amp;utm_source=breitbart\" data-image=\"412491.jpeg\">Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"cr-pill\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>79%<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>, who shares Bush\u2019s goals for more global trade, more immigration, and more foreign adventurism, was quick to defend Bush\u2019s enduring legacy during the debate. \u201cHe kept us safe, and I am forever grateful to what he did for this country,\u201d Rubio <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2016\/02\/13\/transcript-the-donald-trump-jeb-bush-marco-rubio-showdown\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> earnestly as he was met with uproarious applause from the GOP<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/02\/14\/rnc-under-fire-over-debate-audience-stacking-as-local-gop-chairman-confirms-party-donors-get-debate-tickets\/\">donor-stacked<\/a>\u00a0audience.Immediately following the debate, professional Republicans, including writers at the<em>National Review<\/em>, pounced on\u00a0the opportunity to once again\u2014 now more emphatically\u2014 proclaim Trump ineligible of being the Party\u2019s nominee<\/p>\n<p>Many even sought to portray Trump as a radical \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/will-trumps-george-w-bush-bashing-backfire-in-south-carolina\/2016\/02\/15\/568ea1bc-d3fc-11e5-9823-02b905009f99_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">truther<\/a>\u201d\u2014 a claim which seems particularly bizarre considering that Trump is the only GOP candidate to propose a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2015\/12\/08\/paul-ryan-marco-rubio-lindsey-graham-attack-trump-muslim-immigration\/\">pause<\/a>on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2015\/09\/14\/federal-data-u-s-annually-admits-quarter-of-a-million-muslim-migrants\/\">Muslim migration<\/a>\u2014 repeatedly citing, as his reasoning for doing so, his desire to prevent future terror attacks carried out by Muslim migrants, such as 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>Reports described\u00a0Trump\u2019s assault on Bush as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/notes\/2016\/02\/the-heretical-donald-trump\/462762\/\" target=\"_blank\">heretical<\/a>\u201d to Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>However, contrary\u00a0to what the writings of professional Republicans may\u00a0suggest,\u00a0Buchanan explains that\u00a0the Republican electorate \u2014 and the American people in general \u2014 have resoundingly rejected the Bush legacy and, more broadly, have rejected Republican globalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica is rejecting the Bush immigration policy that refused to secure our border, allowed 12 million illegals to enter, then proffered amnesty because it said the United States is helpless to do anything about their presence here,\u201d Buchanan said.<\/p>\n<p>Buchanan has warned of the Balkanization that will ensue as a result of the immigration agenda of Bush Republicanism\u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/patbuchanan\/2008\/03\/25\/the_isms_that_bedevil_bush\/page\/full\" target=\"_blank\">writing<\/a> in 2008 that Bush\u2019s immigration policies \u201cmay turn this republic into a Tower of Babel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a 2009 <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/economics\/2009\/01\/09\/bush-on-jobs-the-worst-track-record-on-record\/\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>, under George W. Bush\u2019s presidency, the U.S. created three million new jobs. Yet at the same time, under Bush\u2019s presidency, 10.5 million new immigrants (legal and illegal) <a href=\"http:\/\/cis.org\/2012-profile-of-americas-foreign-born-population#f2\" target=\"_blank\">settled<\/a> in the United States \u2014 meaning that Bush brought in three immigrants for every one job he created. During that time, the number of working-age, native-born Americans not working exploded. According to the\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019\u00a0current population survey, the\u00a0number of working-age Americans without a job increased by 10.6 million between the fourth quarter of 2000, right before Bush took office, compared to the fourth quarter of 2008, right before he left office.<\/p>\n<p>Pew polling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/09\/30\/on-views-of-immigrants-americans-largely-split-along-party-lines\/\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a> shows that 92% of the Republican electorate \u2014 and 83% of the American electorate as a whole (Republicans and Democrats) \u2014 would like to see America\u2019s immigration level frozen or slashed.<\/p>\n<p>While many GOP candidates have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/video\/2016\/01\/17\/rubio-were-not-going-to-round-up-and-deport-12-million-people\/\">argued<\/a> that it is not possible to round up and deport 12 million people residing unlawfully in the country, Trump has distinguished himself from the field with his <a href=\"http:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/4606273281001\/trump-on-immigration-we-either-have-a-country-or-we-dont\/#sp=show-clips\" target=\"_blank\">nation-state-focused<\/a> worldview: \u201cWe either have a country or we don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buchanan, who has not made any endorsement in the\u00a0race, explained that the American people are rejecting the trade globalism of Bush Republicans that \u201ccarted off what was once the greatest manufacturing base the world had ever seen\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Trump\u2019s success is a repudiation of a Bush \u2018free-trade\u2019 policy that allowed China to run up $4 trillion in trade surpluses against us since George H. W. Bush took office, and to cart off what was once the greatest manufacturing base the world had ever seen.\u00a0 Compare Detroit and Shanghai today \u2014 to see the fruits of \u2018free trade\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Bush trade policy brought down the curtain on America\u2019s economic independence. We now depend on foreign and sometimes hostile nations for the necessities of our national life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, the number of American manufacturing jobs decreased by 3.4 million under George W. Bush\u2019s presidency as he\u00a0continued to push for more global trade agreements and opposed efforts to crack down on illicit trading practices. As Bush\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/ws\/?pid=64018\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0the time, \u201cI believe that the entry of China\u2026 into the WTO will strengthen the global trading system and expand world economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under President Bush, the trade deficit nearly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epipolicycenter.org\/blm-trade_and_jobs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">doubled<\/a>, the trade deficit with China tripled, and the national debt of the United States also nearly doubled.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has distinguished himself from Bush Republicanism with his vociferous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/01\/30\/exclusive-donald-j-trump-makes-the-case-that-electing-him-president-is-the-only-way-to-stop-obamatrade\/\">opposition<\/a>to the Trans-Pacific Partnership \u2014 a pact which both Cruz and Rubio cast a vote to fast-track and have previously praised. Rubio has not <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/01\/22\/ahead-of-iowa-caucus-marco-rubio-says-he-wont-reveal-his-position-on-tpp-until-after-the-primaries\/\">retracted<\/a> his prior support of TPP, whereas Cruz has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/02\/14\/marco-rubio-goes-9-debates-with-no-questions-on-how-he-will-vote-on-tpp\/\">straddled the line<\/a> by saying he opposes \u201cin its current form\u201d the pact he once <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/putting-congress-in-charge-on-trade-1429659409\" target=\"_blank\">described<\/a> as \u201chistoric\u201d and said\u00a0would \u201cmean greater access to a billion customers for American manufacturers, farmers and ranchers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cruz and Rubio also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/02\/06\/donald-trump-puts-obamatrade-back-in-spotlight\/\">opposed<\/a> efforts to combat foreign currency manipulation, something Trump has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2016\/02\/06\/donald-trump-puts-obamatrade-back-in-spotlight\/\">warned<\/a> is being used by foreign countries to put American factories out of business.<\/p>\n<p>By a margin of nearly five-to-one, the American people believe these so-called free trade deals lower wages rather than raise them, according to Pew polling data.<\/p>\n<p>Buchanan continues: \u201cTrump\u2019s success also represents a repudiation of a reflexively interventionist foreign policy that produced the longest wars in our history, cost us 6,000 dead, 40,000 wounded, and trillions of dollars.\u00a0 And the price tag rises monthly. We are now mired down in five wars \u2014 Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen \u2014 for what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContrast where we were when Ronald Reagan went home, with where we are, and it is easy to understand the revolutions raging in both parties, Buchanan concludes. \u00a0\u201cAmerica\u2019s establishment has failed America.\u00a0 The single clearest message in the presidential campaign of 2015-2016 is that the American people would like to cleanse our capital city of its ruling class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, while Buchanan has been described as remarkably prescient, particular\u00a0statements from George W. Bush may strike some as reflecting\u00a0a\u00a0fundamental misunderstanding of the views of the American electorate. Bush has articulated\u00a0positions which seem antithetical to the \u201cTrump phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For instance, in 2008 Bush <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/03\/14\/AR2008031402534.html\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m troubled by isolationism and protectionism \u2026 (and) another \u2018ism,\u2019 and that\u2019s nativism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bush doubled down on this sentiment in 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/nation.foxnews.com\/george-w-bush\/2011\/02\/02\/bush-worried-america-becoming-nativist\" target=\"_blank\">declaring<\/a>, \u201cIf you study history, is that there are some \u2018isms\u2019 that occasionally pop up \u2014 pop up. One is isolationism and its evil twin protectionism and its evil triplet nativism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, these issues are arguably the central focus of the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u00a0has surged in the polls with his campaign\u00a0platform that rejects\u00a0the Bush \u201cisms\u201d of military adventurism, trade globalism, and migration multiculturalism \u2014 the latter, most emphatically, by rejecting the donor class <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-government\/2015\/12\/10\/sessions-senate-moves-ratify-immigration-foreign-muslims-civil-right\/\">assumption<\/a> that Muslim migration is a civil right.<\/p>\n<p>In perhaps just one remarkable display of Buchanan\u2019s foresight, in 2008 the conservative thinker <a href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/patbuchanan\/2008\/03\/25\/the_isms_that_bedevil_bush\/page\/full\" target=\"_blank\">penned<\/a> a column responding to Bush\u2019s so-called \u201cevil\u201d -isms, which have now come to define the 2016 election.<\/p>\n<p>Buchanan observed\u00a0that there is nothing about Bush Republicanism that is particularly attractive to American conservatives. He said, \u201cAfter the judges and tax cuts, what is there about Bush that is conservative? His foreign policy is Wilsonian. His trade policy is pure FDR. His spending is LBJ all the way.
