{"id":30848,"date":"2016-02-11T07:18:28","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T11:18:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=30848"},"modified":"2016-02-11T07:19:38","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T11:19:38","slug":"why-are-28-pages-of-the-joint-congressional-investigation-into-911-still-classified","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=30848","title":{"rendered":"Why are 28 pages of the Joint Congressional Investigation into 9\/11 still classified?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more-->By Rick Moran<br \/>\nAmerican Thinker<\/p>\n<p>Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Congress set up a joint committee to investigate.\u00a0 After nearly 6 months, the joint committee released its report \u2013 but the Bush administration redacted 28 pages of the report, citing the damage the information could do to our relationships with foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since then, families of the victims of 9\/11, lawmakers, and government watchdog groups have all been agitating for the declassification of those 28 pages.\u00a0 First the Bush administration, and then the Obama administration has refused all requests to reveal what&#8217;s in those 28 pages.\u00a0 President Obama told the families during a 9\/11 memorial service that he would release the information, only to renege on that promise.<\/p>\n<p>Why the secrecy?\u00a0 It&#8217;s believed that the 28 pages detail the assistance by Saudi nationals given to the terrorists.\u00a0 Speculation has centered on some members of the House of Saud who may have given cash and other aid to the terrorists, and a faction in Saudi intelligence that may have also helped the attackers.<\/p>\n<p>Now, investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson will launch her new TV show by delving into the secrets to be found in the missing 28 pages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2015\/sep\/10\/sharyl-attkisson-returns-tv-news-look-911-classifi\/\">Washington Times:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a preview of her new Sunday morning news broadcast, five-time Emmy winner and former\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/cbs\/\">CBS<\/a>\u00a0anchor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/sharyl-attkisson\/\">Sharyl Attkisson<\/a>\u00a0will delve into the top-secret pages of Congress\u2019 intelligence report on the 9\/11 terrorist attacks, which are still kept under wraps 14 years later.<\/p>\n<p>In the report,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/sharyl-attkisson\/\">Ms. Attkisson<\/a>\u00a0speaks with current and former lawmakers and family members of victims of the 9\/11 attacks to uncover why the documents, known as the \u201c28 pages\u201d are still undisclosed.<\/p>\n<p>No ordinary American can read the highly classified section of the report, and members of Congress, sworn to secrecy, are only allowed to read the pages under strict supervision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spoke to people off- and on-camera who went as far as they could giving hints and information to me about what\u2019s in them,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/sharyl-attkisson\/\">Ms. Attkisson<\/a>told The Washington Times.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Steven Lynch, Massachusetts Democrat, told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/sharyl-attkisson\/\">Ms. Attkisson<\/a>\u00a0the report gives names and identities of individuals who were \u201ccomplicit\u201d in the terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are clearly identified. How people were financed, where they were housed, where the money was coming from, the conduits that were used and the connections between some of these individuals,\u201d Mr. Lynch said in the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Other lawmakers also give hints about some of the alleged responsibility and financial ties the attackers had to prominent figures in Saudi Arabia, and speculate that the reason the documents are still classified is to shield that nation from embarrassment and maintain U.S.-Saudi diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs more and more people see these records they can\u2019t see any legitimate reason why the pages are still withheld from the public and suspect that they are being hidden to protect people,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/sharyl-attkisson\/\">Ms. Attkisson<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The people who may be &#8220;protected&#8221; by keeping the information classified could include President Bush himself, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2004\/03\/11\/unger_1\/\">who authorized<\/a> several flights immediately after 9\/11\u00a0of Saudi nationals \u2013 including, reportedly, members of the bin Laden family.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that some of the names that show up in those 28 missing pages were on one or more of those flights out of the country.\u00a0 This would be embarrassing for the ex-president, but it&#8217;s no reason not to declassify the information.<\/p>\n<p>And President Obama would have no interest in saving President Bush from embarrassment, so what&#8217;s his excuse?\u00a0 Some of those names must be real eye-openers \u2013 people very close to the throne.\u00a0 Releasing the names may destabilize the Saudi government at a time when they are coming under attack from ISIS and al-Qaeda.\u00a0 It is definitely not in the interest of the U.S. to cause the fall of the House of Saud \u2013 not when even more radical Islamists are waiting in the wings.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the Saudis have been helpful in taking down several al-Qaeda terror cells in the Middle East and elsewhere, and losing that cooperation would be a blow to our counterterrorism efforts.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s a legitimate question to ask if all of this justifies keeping the information from the American people.<\/p>\n<p>If I were a family member of a 9\/11 casualty, I wouldn&#8217;t care about the geopolitical considerations.\u00a0 I&#8217;d want the information released and the guilty parties brought to justice.\u00a0 So perhaps we should take our cue from those who lost the most on 9\/11 and get the information before the American people and let the chips fall where they may.<\/p>\n<p>___<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/why_are_28_pages_of_the_joint_congressional_investigation_into_911_still_classified.html#ixzz3zrD0tjat\">http:\/\/www.americanthinker.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/why_are_28_pages_of_the_joint<br \/>\n_congressional_investigation_into_911_still_classified.html#ixzz3zrD0tjat<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-30848","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/30848","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=30848"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/30848\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=30848"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=30848"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=30848"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
