More Than a Dozen US Cities Destroy Homeless Camps Days Before Christmas<\/h1>\n

On any given night in the United States, there are an estimated 578,000 people who are sleeping without a roof over their head.<\/h2>\n

Instead of\u00a0embracing the spirit of\u00a0the season and being a little more giving and compassionate than\u00a0normal, 15 American cities are trying to\u00a0sweep their homeless members of\u00a0the community out\u00a0of public view, NPR reported.Throughout the month of\u00a0December, Portland, Maine has been rapidly tearing down\u00a0homeless encampments. Earlier this year, the city cut funding for\u00a0both shelters and expenses to\u00a0provide those who couldn\u2019t get into\u00a0shelters with\u00a0motel rooms.<\/p>\n

In Seattle, Washington, the mayor declared a \u201cwar on\u00a0homelessness,\u201d and has lived up\u00a0to it. There are two \u201clegal\u201d homeless encampments in\u00a0the city, which house up\u00a0to 100 people. All others have been torn down\u00a0by police. Law enforcement destroyed 80 encampments in\u00a02012, 131 in\u00a02013, 351 in\u00a02014, and 527 as\u00a0of November 2015, the Seattle Times reported.<\/p>\n

Eureka, California has cracked down\u00a0so hard that the homeless are literally sleeping in\u00a0a swamp. Leaving the camp requires high boots or hip waders, but\u00a0it is the only place in\u00a0the city that police do not enforce camping laws.<\/p>\n

Also in\u00a0California, in\u00a0a town called Mendota, the main homeless encampment was torn down\u00a0just around\u00a0Thanksgiving, by\u00a0request of\u00a0the local water district.<\/p>\n

Phoenix, New Orleans, Washington, DC, Boise, Kissimmee, Tucson, Salinas, Honolulu, Dallas, and Oakland were also listed in\u00a0the report on\u00a0cities giving those who are already having a tough time an even harder one this holiday season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
