As an investigative journalist, I am accustomed to asking tough questions. When I publish, I expect tough questions in turn,<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not what ABC News <i>This Week<\/i> host and chief anchor George Stephanopoulos delivered when he interviewed me about my new book on the Clinton Foundation last month. There&#8217;s a reason. Though Stephanopoulos <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/style\/abc-newss-stephanopoulos-donated-50000-to-clinton-foundation\/2015\/05\/14\/49018d46-fa42-11e4-9030-b4732caefe81_story.html\">belatedly disclosed<\/a>\u00a0$75,000 in donations to the foundation, he has yet to disclose his much deeper relationship with the Clinton Foundation.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When Stephanopoulos invited me on his <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-clinton-cash-author-peter-schweizer\/story?id=30568766\">Sunday program<\/a>, I knew that he had worked as a top adviser and campaign manager to President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, but I didn&#8217;t know about his donations or his other ties to the foundation founded and overseen by the former president and his wife, potential future president Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-OHuP9s31H1g\" class=\"story-asset oembed-asset\">\n<div class=\"story-oembed-wrap \">\n<div class=\"js-oembed story-oembed story-oembed-usa-today story-oembed-type-link\" data-oembed-type=\"link\" data-oembed-provider=\"usa-today\">\n<div class=\"oembed-asset oembed-asset-link oembed-asset-usa-today\">\n<div class=\"oembed-link-thumbnail\">\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9065941e142eb769bb76794c742e08d1e14ee558\/r=300\/http\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9065941e142eb769bb76794c742e08d1e14ee558\/r=300\/http\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/27f6723d2a048dcdd1fd4559c089a585f2cb8330\/c=486-0-2514-2028\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/05\/15\/USATODAY\/USATODAY\/635672888707182309-XXX-ABC-NEWS-stephanapoulos-this-week-5162-.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Heidi Gutman, ABC)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I agreed to be interviewed, expecting a robust examination of my new book, <i><a title=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Clinton-Cash-Foreign-Governments-Businesses\/dp\/0062369288\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Clinton-Cash-Foreign-Governments-Businesses\/dp\/0062369288\">Clinton Cash<\/a>,<\/i> and my reporting on the Clintons&#8217; accumulation of massive personal wealth, cronyism and the lack of transparency surrounding the Clintons&#8217; foundation.<\/p>\n<p>I expected probing questions, similar to the ones I&#8217;ve received from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vMuwljWsDDs\">Andrea Mitchell <\/a>on MSNBC, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/transcript\/2015\/04\/26\/author-peter-schweizer-on-following-clinton-cash-trail\/\">Chris Wallace<\/a> on Fox News and <a href=\"http:\/\/cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com\/2015\/05\/10\/clinton-cash-author-on-cnns-reliable-sources\/\">Frank Sesno<\/a> on CNN.<\/p>\n<p>What I did not expect \u2014 what no one expected \u2014 was the sort of &#8220;hidden hand journalism&#8221; that has contributed to America&#8217;s news media&#8217;s crisis of credibility in particular, and Americans&#8217; distrust of the news media more broadly.<\/p>\n<p>If Stephanopoulos had disclosed his donations to the very foundation I was there to talk about, perhaps it would have put the aggressive posture of his interview with me in context.<\/p>\n<p>But he didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>And even though he has<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/george-stephanopoulos-apologizes-on-air-discloses-clinton-foundation-donations-video\/\"> apologized <\/a>to his viewers for keeping this information from both his audience and his bosses, there is much that Stephanopoulos has yet to disclose to his viewers. Indeed, far from being a passive donor who strokes Clinton Foundation checks from afar, a closer look reveals that Stephanopoulos is an ardent and engaged Clinton Foundation advocate.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in his on air apology for this ethical mess, <a href=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=984\">Stephanopoulos<\/a> did not disclose that in 2006 he was a <a title=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=3089\" href=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=3089\">f<\/a><a title=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=3089\" href=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=3089\">eatured attendee<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/podcast.kff.org\/podcast\/cgi2006\/092106_cgi_health_a_audio.mp3\">panel moderator<\/a> at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI).<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-OHuP9s-voX8\" class=\"story-asset oembed-asset\">\n<div class=\"story-oembed-wrap \">\n<div class=\"js-oembed story-oembed story-oembed-usa-today story-oembed-type-link\" data-oembed-type=\"link\" data-oembed-provider=\"usa-today\">\n<div class=\"oembed-asset oembed-asset-link oembed-asset-usa-today\">\n<div class=\"oembed-link-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9065941e142eb769bb76794c742e08d1e14ee558\/r=300\/http\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9065941e142eb769bb76794c742e08d1e14ee558\/r=300\/http\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/44f542d26240032fb3d7dd3779d4bb231db7a967\/c=0-0-795-795\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/05\/04\/USATODAY\/USATODAY\/635663602838425837-OURVIEW.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"oembed-link-thumbnail\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"module-position-OHuP9s-wQy0\" class=\"story-asset oembed-asset\">\n<div class=\"story-oembed-wrap \">\n<div class=\"js-oembed story-oembed story-oembed-usa-today story-oembed-type-link\" data-oembed-type=\"link\" data-oembed-provider=\"usa-today\">\n<div class=\"oembed-asset oembed-asset-link oembed-asset-usa-today\">\n<div class=\"oembed-link-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9065941e142eb769bb76794c742e08d1e14ee558\/r=300\/http\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9065941e142eb769bb76794c742e08d1e14ee558\/r=300\/http\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/0e448243aa98a230fe429044dc44a2143ffcca17\/c=16-0-729-713\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/05\/04\/USATODAY\/USATODAY\/635663610831500311-OPPOSE.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He did not disclose that in 2007, he was a <a href=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=2543\">featured attendee<\/a> at the CGI annual meeting, a gathering also attended by <a href=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=1744\">several individuals<\/a> I report on in <i>Clinton Cash<\/i>, including mega Clinton Foundation donors Lucas Lundin, Frank Giustra, Frank Holmes, and Carlos Slim \u2014 individuals whose involvement with the Clintons I assumed he had invited me on his program to discuss.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanopoulos did not disclose that he was a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clintonglobalinitiative.org\/ourmeetings\/2008\/popups\/Education4.2.asp\">2008 panelist<\/a> at the CGI annual meeting which, once again, featured <a href=\"http:\/\/re.clintonfoundation.org\/page.aspx?pid=2462\">individuals <\/a>I report on in the book, such as billionaire Clinton Foundation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcclatchydc.com\/2015\/02\/18\/257101\/foreign-cash-pours-into-clinton.html\">foreign donor Denis O&#8217;Brien<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ABC&#8217;s most visible news employee did not disclose that in 2009, he served as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clintonglobalinitiative.org\/ourmeetings\/2009\/summaries\/HC%20Breakout-%20Leadership%20and%20Jobs%20to%20Overcome%20Humanitarian%20Crisis.pdf\">panel moderator<\/a> at CGI&#8217;s annual meeting, nor did he disclose that in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/big-journalism\/2015\/05\/15\/george-stephanopoulos-a-member-of-clinton-global-initiative-in-2010-2011\/\">2010 and 2011<\/a>, he was an official CGI member.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanopoulos did not disclose that in 2013 and 2014, he and Chelsea Clintonserved as <a href=\"http:\/\/press.clintonglobalinitiative.org\/press_releases\/president-clinton-and-chelsea-clinton-announce-program-and-more-than-400k-in-funding-for-student-commitment-makers-at-sixth-meeting-of-clinton-global-initiative-university\/\">CGI contest judge<\/a>s for awards, in part, underwritten by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/laureate-a-for-profit-education-firm-finds-international-success-with-a-clintons-help\/2014\/01\/16\/13f8adde-7ca6-11e3-9556-4a4bf7bcbd84_story.html\">Laureate International Universities<\/a> \u2014 a for-profit education company I report on in the book. Bill Clinton was on its payroll until his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/politics\/articles\/2015-04-25\/author-alleges-bill-clinton-just-quit-education-company-because-of-clinton-cash-\">recent resignation.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, Stephanopoulos has favorable feelings toward Hillary and Bill Clinton; he gives their foundation his money and his time. Big-time news media personalities have one thing in very short supply \u2014 time. (As<i>The Washington Post <\/i><a title=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/role-of-hillary-clintons-brother-in-haiti-gold-mine-raises-eyebrows\/2015\/03\/20\/c8b6e3bc-cc05-11e4-a2a7-9517a3a70506_story.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/role-of-hillary-clintons-brother-in-haiti-gold-mine-raises-eyebrows\/2015\/03\/20\/c8b6e3bc-cc05-11e4-a2a7-9517a3a70506_story.html\">reported<\/a>, Rodham met those mining executives at a CGI meeting.)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Stephanopoulos could have pounded away at all the book&#8217;s news. He chose not to. Instead, he made sure to <a title=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-clinton-cash-author-peter-schweizer\/story?id=30568766&amp;singlePage=true\" href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/week-transcript-clinton-cash-author-peter-schweizer\/story?id=30568766&amp;singlePage=true\">highlight<\/a> the <a title=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/media\/2015\/05\/clinton-cash-author-hits-stephanopoulos-abc-news-for-207149.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/media\/2015\/05\/clinton-cash-author-hits-stephanopoulos-abc-news-for-207149.html\">four months<\/a> I wrote speeches forPresident George W. Bush and my long past financial supporters, all while keeping quiet about his deep and longstanding involvement in the Clintons&#8217; foundation, and the<a title=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/media\/2015\/05\/george-stephanopoulos-discloses-contribution-to-clinton-207120.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/media\/2015\/05\/george-stephanopoulos-discloses-contribution-to-clinton-207120.html\">three annual checks<\/a> for $25,000 that he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>What ABC News&#8217; top anchor has done is far different than the &#8220;honest mistake&#8221; ABC called it in a statement earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>I asked ABC News about the fact that this information was yet to be disclosed to ABC viewers, and mostly they avoided my questions, releasing a statement that reads in full, &#8220;Yes, George made us aware that he was moderating these panels and that is absolutely within our guidelines. We know that he would be listed as a member \u2014 as all moderators are. He is in good company of scores of other journalists that have moderated these panels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That, however, is not at all what the Clinton Foundation website says about CGI membership. <a title=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100919074105\/http:\/\/clintonglobalinitiative.org\/membership\/membership_benefits.asp?Section=Membership&amp;PageTitle=Membership Benefits\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100919074105\/http:\/\/clintonglobalinitiative.org\/membership\/membership_benefits.asp?Section=Membership&amp;PageTitle=Membership%20Benefits\">Read<\/a> for <a title=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100926011843\/http:\/\/clintonglobalinitiative.org\/membership\/faq_membership.asp?Section=Membership&amp;PageTitle=FAQ: Membership\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20100926011843\/http:\/\/clintonglobalinitiative.org\/membership\/faq_membership.asp?Section=Membership&amp;PageTitle=FAQ:%20Membership\">yourself<\/a>. Whether ABC News will ultimately punish Stephanopoulos is unclear.<\/p>\n<p>What is certain is that Stephanopoulos&#8217; ethical malpractice and hidden-hand journalism have done further injury to an essential, if beleaguered, institution, one already battling to preserve legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s news no one can celebrate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephanopoulos, ABC have not fully disclosed Clinton ties: Schweizer ABC&#8217;s anchor much closer to Hillary&#8217;s foundation than he told his viewers.
