{"id":14395,"date":"2015-04-23T15:02:58","date_gmt":"2015-04-23T15:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=14395"},"modified":"2015-04-23T15:03:09","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T15:03:09","slug":"why-is-nestle-being-allowed-to-sell-water-outside-of-california-for-so-much-profit-during-the-drought-of-the-millennium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=14395","title":{"rendered":"Why is Nestl\u00e9 being allowed to sell water outside of California for so much profit during the drought of the millennium?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>How Nestl\u00e9 is using a Native American tribe&#8217;s land to get away with draining California dry<\/h1>\n<h3><strong>You might be most familiar with Nestl\u00e9 as the company behind some of the world&#8217;s tastiest cavity-inducing chocolate treats.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You know, like these brands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536addd313030000c1b0000\/attachments\/nestlebrand-1289fc3ced242a9134fb4586dbaeb25d.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>But did you know that they&#8217;re also the company behind seven (yes, seven) different brands of bottled water in the U.S.?<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Count &#8217;em: Ice Mountain, Poland Spring, Deer Park, Zephyrhills, Ozarka, Arrowhead, and good ol&#8217; Nestl\u00e9 PureLife.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536a9fb306432000c1a0000\/attachments\/1-9b7076cd13709cc090fc8a18bda7e4f7.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The number of brands alone seems a bit excessive, but hey, that&#8217;s just me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And while I could get into a long-winded rant about the evils of bottled water, complete with pictures of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/the-worst-vacation-spot-on-earth-is-at-least-free-to-visit-and-its-growing\" target=\"_blank\">garbage island<\/a>, I&#8217;m here to tell a different story.<\/p>\n<h3>See, California is going through a bit of a drought \u2014 and I mean &#8220;a bit&#8221; in the sense that my beloved Chicago Cubs&#8217; 107-year World Series drought is &#8220;a bit&#8221; of a losing streak.<\/h3>\n<p>(This is our year! Or maybe next? Or the one after that?)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536c3c9306432001c6b0000\/attachments\/cubs-55d4e805edd77d6ad3e2ec6dcd1cce95.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>But seriously, it&#8217;s bad out there.<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536b47e306432002c4d0000\/attachments\/drought1-9c5e0b3212a4da387e26be1b845c53f1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>This is a water basin. I kid you not.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>As luck would have it, Nestl\u00e9 owns a few bottled water plants right in the state \u2014 and they know how to drill from the desert. California is saved, right? Wrong!<\/h3>\n<h3>Rather than keep the water for local use, Nestl\u00e9 is bottling it and selling it all around the country.<\/h3>\n<p>I know, I know. The idea of removing water from an area that is literally in a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.water.ca.gov\/waterconditions\/declaration.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">state of emergency<\/a> <\/strong>due to a drought is almost Dickensian cruelty.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536c19c306432001c680000\/attachments\/scrooge-968818eaaf755c5a000a8db414b83be3.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Humbug!<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>At this point, I thought to myself, &#8220;OK, OK, I&#8217;m sure the state can hop in there and tell Nestl\u00e9 to stop sending water out of state, right?&#8221; Wrong.<\/h3>\n<p>Because one of Nestl\u00e9&#8217;s bottling plants is located here, the state is powerless.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536a990306432001c1a0000\/attachments\/Cabazon-9456a65a9dac6b02b993d1b0e8685a7b.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Why? Because that land belongs to the Morongo Native American tribe (Nestl\u00e9 leases it from them), meaning that they&#8217;re not obligated to follow local rules.<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536a9a1313030001c260000\/attachments\/pic1-0e6e6a01e651eedeb706c3f94cbf7784.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At another of their Los Angeles-area plants, located in the San Bernardino National Forest, Nestl\u00e9 simply hasn&#8217;t bothered to renew necessary operating permits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536a9b6306432002c2b0000\/attachments\/berna-6ada702a0eef3f7b821b019a1a3a8735.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536a9c2313030002c210000\/attachments\/pic2-05807d07d4f31e21ef344ec9d5b059c1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, Nestl\u00e9 says its water-sourcing methods are sustainable, though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desertsun.com\/story\/news\/environment\/2014\/07\/12\/nestle-arrowhead-tapping-water\/12589267\/\" target=\"_blank\">some have questioned the accuracy of those claims<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>So unless Nestl\u00e9 wants to have to change their logos to this:<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upw-prod-images.global.ssl.fastly.net\/nugget\/5536a9e1313030001c2a0000\/attachments\/water2-2b2b30c8c52ac57c9082eca144a74e31.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>They should stop sending what little water California has out of state, and use their corporate powers for good.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How Nestl\u00e9 is using a Native American tribe&#8217;s land to get away with draining California dry You might be most familiar with Nestl\u00e9 as the company behind some of the world&#8217;s tastiest cavity-inducing chocolate treats.
