Hayden Center. The discussants were John Brennan, Michael McCabe, John McGlaughlin, and Michael Morrell.\u00a0<strong>They all agreed with the statement by McLaughlin (former Deputy CIA Director)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1190039245429387264\">\u201cThank God for the \u2018Deep State\u2019\u201d, and the large audience there also applauded it \u2014 nobody booed it<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former CIA director John McLaughlin on Trump\u2019s impeachment: \u201cThank God for the deep state\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/t4pQhFOBuj\">pic.twitter.com\/t4pQhFOBuj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1190039245429387264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 31, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>John Brennan amplified upon the thought, and there was yet more applause. However, that thought hadn\u2019t been invented by McLaughlin; it instead had evolved recently in the pages of the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>. Perhaps the discussants had read it there. Instead of America\u2019s \u2018news\u2019-media uncritically trumpeting what government officials assert to be facts (as they traditionally do), we now have former spooks uncritically trumpeting what a mainstream \u2018news\u2019-medium has recently concocted to be the case \u2014\u00a0<em>about themselves<\/em>.\u00a0<strong>They\u2019ve come out of the closet, about\u00a0<em>being<\/em>\u00a0the Deep State. They\u00a0<strong>mis<\/strong>-\u2018define\u2019 it, as being,\u00a0<strong>instead<\/strong>, the taxpayer-salaried career\u00a0<em>Government<\/em>\u00a0employees, known professionally as \u201cthe Civil Service.\u201d (Although some Civil Servants \u2014 especially at the upper levels \u2014\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0agents for America\u2019s billionaires and retire to cushy board seats, most of them actually are not and do not. And the \u201crevolving door\u201d between \u201cthe public sector\u201d and \u201cthe private sector\u201d is where the Deep State operations become concentrated. That\u2019s the core of the networking, by which the billionaires get served. And, of course, those former spooks at the National Press Club said nothing about it. Are they authentically so stupid that they don\u2019t know about it, or is that just pretense from them?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>How the Deep State\u2019s operatives perpetrate this deception about the meaning of \u201cDeep State\u201d was well exemplified in the nine links that were supplied on October 28th by the extraordinarily honest anonymous German intelligence analyst who blogs as \u201cMoon of Alabama\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>and who condemned there (and linked to) 9 recent articles in the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, as posing a threat against democracy in America.<\/p>\n<p>As I intend to argue here, the 9 articles are, indeed,<strong>\u00a0aimed at deceiving the American public, about what the true meaning of the phrase \u201cthe Deep State\u201d is.<\/strong>\u00a0He headlined\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moonofalabama.org\/2019\/10\/endorsing-the-deep-state-endangers-democracy.html\">\u201cEndorsing The Deep State Endangers Democracy\u201d<\/a>. (And that\u2019s what the October 30th panel discussion was actually doing \u2014 endorsing the Deep State.)<\/p>\n<p>However, he didn\u2019t explain the tactic the\u00a0<em>NYT\u2019<\/em>s editors (and those former spooks) use to deceive the public about the Deep State, and this is what I aim to do here, by showing the transformation, over time, in the way that that propaganda-organization, the New York Times, has been employing the phrase \u201cDeep State\u201d \u2014\u00a0<strong>a remarkable transformation<\/strong>, which started, on 16 February 2017, by the newspaper\u2019s\u00a0<em>denying<\/em>\u00a0that any Deep State exists in America but that it exists only in corrupt nations; and which gradually transitioned into an upside-down, by asserting that a Deep State\u00a0<em>does<\/em>\u00a0exist in the United States, and that it fights\u00a0<em>against<\/em>\u00a0corruption in\u00a0<em>this<\/em>\u00a0country. As always, only fools (such as that applauding audience on October 30th) would believe it, but propagandists depend upon fools and cannot thrive without them.\u00a0<strong>In this case, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>, in those 9 articles, was evolving quickly from a blanket denial, to an American-exceptionalist proud affirmation, that a Deep State rules this country and\u00a0<em>ought<\/em>\u00a0to rule it.<\/strong>\u00a0I agree with the statement that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moonofalabama.org\/2019\/10\/endorsing-the-deep-state-endangers-democracy.html\">\u201cEndorsing The Deep State Endangers Democracy\u201d<\/a>, but I am more concerned here to explain how that endorsement \u2014 that deceit \u2014 is being done.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The first of these\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em>\u00a0articles was published on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/3naTW\">16 February 2017<\/a>, and it denied that the US has any \u201cDeep State\u201d whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>The second, published on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/SdQMB\">6 March 2017<\/a>, blamed President Trump (since the\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em>\u00a0represents mainly\u00a0<em>Democratic Party<\/em>\u00a0billionaires) for mainstreaming the phrase \u201cthe Deep State\u201d into American political discourse, and it alleged that that phrase actually refers\u00a0<em>only<\/em>\u00a0to \u201ccountries like Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan, where authoritarian elements band together to undercut democratically elected leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The third, published on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/jCQQz\">10 March 2017<\/a>, repeated this allegation, that this phrase applies only to \u201cthe powerful deep states of countries like Egypt or Pakistan, experts say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fourth, published on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/MrcZi\">5 September 2018<\/a>, was an anonymous op-ed from a Government employee who condemned Trump and \u201cvowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations.\u201d \u201cThis isn\u2019t the work of the so-called deep state. It\u2019s the work of the steady state.\u201d So:\u00a0<em>still<\/em>\u00a0the\u00a0<em>NYT\u2019<\/em>s editors were hewing to their propaganda-line, that no \u201cDeep State\u201d exists in America \u2014 there are just whistleblowers,\u00a0<em>here<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth, on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/9GdfE\">18 December 2018<\/a>, said, for example, that \u201cAdam Lovinger, a Pentagon analyst, was one of the first to wrap himself in the deep state defense\u201d \u2014 namely, that they consist of \u201cpeople who have been targeted for political reasons.\u201d So, the\u00a0<em>NYT\u2019<\/em>s editors were now reinforcing their new false \u2018definition\u2019 of \u201cDeep State,\u201d as consisting just of Government whistleblowers.<\/p>\n<p>The sixth, on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/CzpDt\">6 October 2019<\/a>, said, \u201cPresident Trump and some of his allies have asserted without evidence that a cabal of American officials \u2014 the so-called deep state \u2014 embarked on a broad operation to thwart Mr. Trump\u2019s campaign. The conspiracy theory remains unsubstantiated.\u201d So: the\u00a0<em>NYT\u2019<\/em>s editors were back, again, to\u00a0<em>denying<\/em>\u00a0that there is\u00a0<em>any<\/em>\u00a0\u201cDeep State\u201d in America. This was a signal, from them, that they were starting to recognize that they\u2019d need to jiggle their \u2018definition\u2019 of \u201cDeep State,\u201d at least a bit.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh, on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/sFGtl\">20 October 2019,<\/a>\u00a0was by a member of the Editorial Board, and it boldly proclaimed, about \u201cthe deep state,\u201d \u201cLet us now praise these not-silent heroes.\u201d The propagandists now had settled firmly upon their new (and previously merely exploratory) \u2018definition\u2019 of \u201cDeep State,\u201d as consisting of whistleblowers in the US Government\u2019s Civil Services, \u201cindividuals willing to step up and protest the administration\u2019s war on science, expertise and facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The eighth, on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/ouzfr\">23 October 2019<\/a>, equated \u201cthe deep state\u201d even more boldly with the impeachment of President Trump: \u201cOver the last three weeks, the deep state has emerged from the shadows in the form of real live government officials, past and present, who have defied a White House attempt to block cooperation with House impeachment investigators and provided evidence that largely backs up the still-anonymous whistle-blower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ninth, on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/SIPW7\">26 October 2019<\/a>, which came from \u201ca contributing opinion writer and professor of history,\u201d alleged that the\u00a0<em>origins<\/em>\u00a0of \u201cthe deep state\u201d are to be found with Teddy Roosevelt in the 1880s, when \u201cA healthy dose of elitism drove Roosevelt\u2019s crusade, as the spoils system had been the path to power for immigrant-driven political machines in big cities like New York. Yet the Civil Service laws he and others created marked the beginning of a shift toward a fairer, less corrupt public realm.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>In other words: the Deep State, in America, are not\u00a0perpetrators\u00a0of corrupt government (such as in \u201ccountries like Egypt, Turkey and Pakistan, where authoritarian elements band together to undercut democratically elected leaders\u201d), but are instead courageous\u00a0enemies\u00a0of corrupt government; and they are instituted by the aristocracy here (today\u2019s American billionaires), in order to reduce, if not eliminate, corruption in government (which, the\u00a0Times\u00a0now alleges,\u00a0originates\u00a0amongst, or serves, the lower classes).<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The lessons about Big Brother, which were taught by George Orwell in his merely metaphorical masterpiece\u00a0<em>1984<\/em>, were apparently never learned, because even now \u2014 as his \u201cNewspeak\u201d is being further refined so that black is white, and good is bad, and truth is falsehood \u2014 there still are people who\u00a0<em>subscribe to the propagandists<\/em>\u00a0and cannot get enough of their ridiculous con-games. Though in some poor countries, a corrupt Deep State rules; a Deep State rules in America so as to\u00a0<em>reduce if not prevent<\/em>\u00a0corruption, the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0now concludes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can see how it\u2019s done, in those nine\u00a0<em>NYT<\/em>\u00a0articles.
