{"id":131643,"date":"2019-11-08T12:16:48","date_gmt":"2019-11-08T16:16:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=131643"},"modified":"2019-11-10T13:19:07","modified_gmt":"2019-11-10T17:19:07","slug":"the-phony-anti-defamation-leagues-genocide-legislation-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=131643","title":{"rendered":"The Phony Anti-Defamation League\u2019s Genocide Legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/0-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-131641\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/0-1-1024x707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/0-1-1024x707.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/0-1-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/0-1-768x530.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/0-1.jpg 1316w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By David Boyajian<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why did I testify at the Massachusetts State House on Oct. 7 <i>against<\/i> legislation that would require public schools to teach the Jewish Holocaust, Armenian and Greek Genocides, and other genocides and \u201catrocities\u201d? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Good question, especially as I\u2019m an Armenian American journalist and activist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>My Christian grandparents landed on these shores over 120 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My answers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">A brazenly two-faced, alleged civil\/human rights group \u2014 the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) \u2014 wrote and sponsored the legislation (<a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Bills\/191\/H566\"><span class=\"s4\">H.566<\/span><\/a> &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/malegislature.gov\/Bills\/191\/S327\"><span class=\"s4\">S.327<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">The legislation itself has problems. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Schools have been utterly careless in scrutinizing the programs and curricula proposed or created by outside organizations such as the ADL. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This article goes far beyond Armenian American issues.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s about how the ADL and similar groups intimidate and\/or hoodwink respectable American organizations, schools, and institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Genocide hypocrisy<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ADL continually demands worldwide recognition of, reparations for, and legislation on the Holocaust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yet the ADL long denied\/diminished the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armenian-genocide.org\/\"><span class=\"s4\">Armenian Genocide<\/span><\/a> that Turkey committed (1915-23).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The ADL also colluded with Turkey to defeat Armenian Genocide resolutions in the U.S. Congress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jewish, Israeli, Turkish, and American media have outright admitted this.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So did a fine man, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum\u2019s Chief of Staff, William S. Parsons (now deceased), in a personal conversation with me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was distressed by it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Such blatant hypocrisy renders the ADL unfit to author legislation or pontificate on any genocide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Several other major Jewish groups are equally guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Yola Habif Johnston of the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA) <a href=\"https:\/\/forward.com\/news\/1697\/showdown-set-in-e2-80-98genocide-e2-80-99-debate\/\"><span class=\"s4\">disclosed<\/span><\/a> in 2006 that AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee), American Jewish Committee (AJC), B\u2019nai B\u2019rith, and JINSA \u201chave been working with the Turks on this issue\u201d for more than 15 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe Jewish lobby has quite actively supported Turkey in their efforts to prevent the so-called Armenian genocide resolution from passing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These Jewish groups would demand apologies and more from any mainstream organization that treated the Holocaust like that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But they had few qualms about demeaning the Armenian Genocide. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We aren\u2019t blaming these Jewish organizations\u2019 rank-and-file supporters, who have often expressed disgust with their organizations\u2019 hypocrisy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We fault their <i>leaders<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Trilateral conspiracy unmasked<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2007, I publicly blew the whistle on the ADL\u2019s war against Armenian Americans.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many principled Jews and other non-Armenians, joined in.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The resulting scandal exploded across national and international media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turkey hurled accusations at Israel because the conspiracy among certain Jewish organizations, Israel, and Turkey to do the latter\u2019s dirty work had been unmasked. At that time, relations between Israel and Turkey hadn\u2019t yet soured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two respected, long-established American advocacy organizations, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) and the Armenian Assembly of America (AAA), joined the campaign after a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Grassroots Armenian Americans and others did most of the heavy lifting, though, and quite successfully. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ADL gets slapped<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Consequently, from 2007-8 a dozen Massachusetts cities and the Massachusetts Municipal Association (which represents the entire state) evicted the ADL\u2019s alleged anti-bias program \u201cNo Place for Hate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rarely had the ADL been slapped in the face so hard and so publicly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">New York, Michigan, and California saw similar, though lesser, actions against the ADL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But like nearly all American organizations who criticize the ADL (and other powerful Jewish political groups), the two Armenian American advocacy groups worried about probable retaliation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So in mid-to-late 2008 ANCA and AAA dropped out of the campaign. Nevertheless, a small group of activists, including myself, carried on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">For instance, in 2013 then-Governor Deval Patrick nominated Atty. Joseph S. Berman, an ADL National Commissioner, for a Mass. Superior Court judgeship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Berman subsequently acknowledged he failed to criticize his organization\u2019s genocide hypocrisy<\/span> <span class=\"s1\">prior to 2007. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He was <a href=\"https:\/\/armenianweekly.com\/2013\/11\/24\/judicial-nomination-exhumes-adl-fiasco-councilors-condemn-complicity-in-denial\/\"><span class=\"s4\">grilled<\/span><\/a> on this and other shortcomings by the elected Governor\u2019s Council, which ratifies judicial nominations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I testified against Berman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2014, despite the backing of the entire Massachusetts political, legal, and media establishment, <a href=\"https:\/\/dissidentvoice.org\/2014\/03\/the-anti-defamation-leagues-deceit-helps-sink-a-judgeship\/\"><span class=\"s4\">Berman lost<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We activists \u2014 without ANCA\/AAA support \u2014 won a stunning victory over the ADL.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t let anyone tell you groups like the ADL can\u2019t be beaten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>A weak deal<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two years later, I alerted ANCA and AAA that predominantly Jewish Newton, Mass. had \u2014 perhaps unintentionally \u2014 brought an ADL program into its schools despite having thrown out the ADL in 2007. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unfortunately, ANCA\u2019s Dikran Kaligian, AAA\u2019s Anthony Barsamian, and Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian (of Armenian-Irish ancestry) ignored my advice to simply push the ADL out of Newton once again. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They\u2019re good people and have helped the Armenian American community in many ways. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But in 2016 they made a pathetically weak deal with ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>He acknowledged the Armenian Genocide but only in a \u201cblog\u201d post, not a formal organizational declaration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The \u201cblog\u201d also said the ADL \u201cwould support\u201d \u2014 <i>not<\/i> does or will support<i> <\/i>\u2014 an Armenian Genocide resolution.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The rest of the deal has never been made public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Andrew Tarsy was the New England ADL Director who was fired in 2007 because he acknowledged the Armenian Genocide.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cInadequate\u201d was what he rightly termed the ADL\u2019s 2016 deal with ANCA\/AAA\/Koutoujian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ADL, said Tarsy, \u201cought to lead the conversation about reparations for these [Armenian] families \u2026 assets, land \u2026 everything that Holocaust reparations \u2026 has represented .\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We activists fought and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keghart.com\/Sahagian-ADL\"><span class=\"s4\">wrote<\/span><\/a> against the bad deal but to no avail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ADL\u2019s only \u201csupport\u201d for the Congressional resolution came in a letter three years later \u2014 a mere 24 hours before an overwhelmingly positive October 2 House resolution vote (405-11) whose success was already assured. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2007 Armenian Americans had demanded that as partial moral reparations the ADL must advocate as hard for an Armenian Genocide resolution as it has for Holocaust legislation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The ADL never did so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nor has the self-centered ADL ever apologized to Armenians or made amends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Regardless, the ADL\u2019s chance to do the right thing expired years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Koutoujian\u2019s ambitions<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I place the onus for ANCA\/AAA\u2019s weak-kneed 2016 ADL deal on Sheriff Koutoujian.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Like so many ambitious American politicians, he has openly allied himself with numerous Jewish organizations and individuals to advance his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the nomination of the ADL\u2019s Joseph Berman for a judgeship in 2013, for example, Koutoujian privately urged a councilor who opposed Berman to switch her vote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A Jewish leader had apparently pressed Koutoujian to do this.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Had that councilor done as Koutoujian asked, Berman and the ADL would have won.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2014, Koutoujian and thirteen others \u2014 mostly <a href=\"https:\/\/burlington.wickedlocal.com\/article\/20150120\/News\/150129367\"><span class=\"s4\">local police chiefs<\/span><\/a> \u2014 went on an ADL junket to Israel for \u201ccounterterrorism\u201d training, which is obvious nonsense. Curiously, Koutoujian happened to be the only sheriff.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A Mass. sheriff\u2019s main responsibility is running county jails. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">But even had the ADL never warred against Armenian Americans, it still wouldn\u2019t qualify as a civil\/human rights organization. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>More bad ADL behavior<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">We can only skim the surface here of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atour.com\/~aahgn\/news\/20180904a.html\"><span class=\"s4\">swamp<\/span><\/a> of ADL\u2019s bad behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the 1990s and beyond, the ADL settled two civil rights lawsuits for illicitly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2013\/06\/12\/adl-spies\/\"><span class=\"s4\">surveilling<\/span><\/a> thousands of individuals and organizations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These included the ACLU, Greenpeace, and NAACP as well as civil rights, media, anti-Apartheid, and African\/Asian\/Hispanic\/Jewish\/Native American groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ADL also illegally possessed reams of government records, including classified FBI documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1993, political strings were reportedly pulled at the last moment before a San Francisco grand jury could hear the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ADL did not escape entirely.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It had to pay over $50,000 to the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The mainstream media reported this scandal though not nearly enough. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In reality, then, the ADL is really just a political, rather than a civil\/human rights, group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Like most Jewish organizations, the ADL believes that Holocaust denial\/diminishment is anti-Semitism and, hence, hate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By analogy, therefore, the ADL\u2019s denial\/diminishment of the <i>Armenian<\/i> Genocide would apparently make it a hate group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Dubious genocide legislation<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fast forward to October\u2019s hearing on the ADL\u2019s genocide legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Again, because the ADL has been knee-deep in genocide denial\/diminishment, it has no business writing genocide legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Furthermore, the legislation\u2019s text and concept are flawed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Holocaust is placed before the Armenian Genocide, even though the latter preceded the former by two decades and was a model for Hitler, who admired Turkey\u2019s brutality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The legislation refers to \u201catrocities in Bosnia, Cambodia, Rwanda, and Sudan.\u201d <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some of these, particularly those in Rwanda and Sudan\/Darfur, were definitely genocides not mere \u201catrocities.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The numerous massacres of Native Americans are not mentioned. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Indeed, I suspect the text includes genocides other than the Holocaust mainly to increase its chances of passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Regardless, should genocide instruction as a separate unit be <i>required<\/i><b><i> <\/i><\/b>when so many high school graduates have a poor knowledge of <i>American<\/i> history, not to mention the \u2018Three Rs\u2019? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">By law, moreover, the Mass. Dept. of Education already has a unit on genocide which teachers can use. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And some schools already invite organizations such as <i>Facing History and Ourselves <\/i>to teach genocide history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Genocide is legitimate history and should be included in history textbooks rather than presented as a wholly separate unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moreover, ANCA and AAA should not, as they did, have explicitly teamed with the disreputable ADL to support this legislation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Had they wished to support the bills, they could have done so independently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If this legislation succeeds, the genocide-denying\/diminishing ADL may well play a role in writing and teaching the curriculum.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s outrageous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Are schools competent to bring in <i>outside<\/i> groups to teach genocide or other subjects? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Dubious outside groups<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Consider the dozen Massachusetts city governments \u2014 often pushed by their so-called \u2018human rights commissions\u2019 \u2014 and the Mass. Municipal Assoc. that formally approved the ADL\u2019s \u201cNo Place for Hate\u201d but later rejected it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They probably didn\u2019t bother to look into the ADL\u2019s checkered background.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or did so but didn\u2019t care.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At a minimum, they\u2019re inept.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other cities and schools across America who have adopted ADL programs must also be inept. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Over one thousand cities, schools, universities, and law-enforcement agencies here and internationally participate in ADL programs such as \u201cNo Place for Hate,\u201d \u201cCampus of Difference,\u201d \u201cClassroom of Difference,\u201d \u201cAnti-bullying,\u201d and more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These curricula purport to instill \u2018tolerance and diversity.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But was the ADL \u2018tolerant\u2019 of the civil rights, media, anti-Apartheid, and ethnic groups and individuals it surveilled?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Far from it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Did the \u2018diversity\u2019 of genocides the ADL recognized until recently include the Armenian Genocide?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On the contrary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Are students in ADL programs told the facts about that organization\u2019s distasteful history?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Doubtful.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s not education.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s deceit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Any organization that presumes to inculcate morals into young people must come with clean hands.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That\u2019s not the ADL. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Educators often fail to investigate other outside organizations and programs they bring into schools and libraries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Consider <i>DragQueenStoryHour (.org).<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hundreds of American public schools and libraries are hosting frightening, bizarrely outfitted, provocative adult drag queens who read to, physically contact, and sometimes <span class=\"s4\">strip<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/zyntrax\/status\/1179967775042867200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/twitter.com\/zyntrax\/status\/1179967775042867200&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1573463371056000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHRYr73rR84FVQi6DXq8odZJCc6Hg\">(<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/us\/2019\/october\/librarys-drag-queen-story-hour-strip-show-goes-viral\">https:\/\/www1.cbn.com\/cbnnews\/<wbr \/>us\/2019\/october\/librarys-drag-<wbr \/>queen-story-hour-strip-show-<wbr \/>goes-viral<\/a>)\u00a0before young, often pre-school, children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some of these drag queens have been convicted of child sex abuse and prostitution. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Problematic organizations that seek to influence unsuspecting students are making schools a battlefield.
