Michelle Obama says whites \u2018still running\u2019 away from minorities, immigrants<\/h1>\n

White Americans are \u201cstill running\u201d elsewhere when minorities and\u00a0immigrants<\/a>\u00a0move into their communities,\u00a0Michelle Obama<\/a>\u00a0observed Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The former first lady made the remarks at the Obama Foundation Summit, held at the\u00a0Illinois<\/a>\u00a0Institute of Technology in Chicago.<\/p>\n

In a sit-down interview with journalist Isabel Wilkerson, in which Obama was accompanied by her brother, Craig Robinson, an executive with the NBA\u2019s New York Knicks, Obama described when she first became conscious of what\u2019s been called \u201cwhite flight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were doing everything we were supposed to do \u2013 and better,\u201d Obama said of her family, recalling when they got a new address on Chicago\u2019s South Side. \u201cBut when we moved in, white families moved out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to remind white folks that y\u2019all were running from us,\u201d she continued, according to\u00a0the Chicago Sun-Times<\/a>. \u201cAnd you\u2019re still running.\u201d<\/p>\n

Discrimination took another form as she advanced in her academic career, said the 55-year-old Obama,\u00a0a best-selling author with degrees from Princeton and Harvard,\u00a0adding she did her best to move forward and achieve despite the mistreatment.<\/p>\n

“As people doubted us coming through \u2014 ‘Are you Princeton material? Can you really make the grade?’ Can you cut it?’ \u2014 What do you do in those instances?\u201d Obama asked, according to The Hill. \u201cAll you can do is put your head down and do the work and let the work, your truth,\u00a0speak for itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Obama added that she is mystified by the concept of discrimination.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t make people not afraid of black people,\u201d she said,\u00a0according to The Hill<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on. I can\u2019t explain what\u2019s happening in your head.”<\/p>\n

“But maybe if I show up every day as a human, a good human, doing wonderful things, loving my family, loving our kids, taking care of things that I care about \u2014 maybe, just maybe that work will pick away at the scabs of our discrimination. Maybe that will slowly unravel it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, a Boston Herald-Franklin Pierce University survey found that Obama would become\u00a0an instant Democratic front-runner<\/a>\u00a0in New Hampshire if she decided to seek the White House in 2020,\u00a0although she has said there is \u201czero chance\u201d that she\u2019ll enter the race.<\/p>\n

“There are so many ways to improve this country and build a better world, and I keep doing plenty of them,\u201d she told Amtrak’s magazine The National this past August, \u201cfrom working with young people to helping families lead healthier lives. But sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office will never be one of them. It\u2019s just not for\u00a0me.\u201d<\/p>\n
