That job is similar to the one she held the previous year, her first year of teaching.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/429152169\/Riverdale-Board-of-Education-Meeting-Minutes-1970-1971?secret_password=nTS2VmCgg4oeOIw7xlcn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/429152169\/Riverdale-Board-of-Education-Meeting-Minutes-1970-1971?secret_password%3DnTS2VmCgg4oeOIw7xlcn&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1570563146888000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEMvCzvbYdHXY8tWAV9OX0FOOPnvw\">Minutes<\/a>\u00a0from a board meeting held two months later, on June 16, 1971, indicate that Warren\u2019s resignation was &#8220;accepted with regret.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Warren&#8217;s claim that she was dismissed after her first year of teaching because she was pregnant has become a cornerstone of her stump speeches. She has used it to both explain her jump from teaching into the legal world as well as to showcase the difficulties that women face in the workplace. Ahead of the fourth Democratic debate next week, the Massachusetts senator is running neck and neck with former vice president Joe Biden. The\u00a0<em>RealClearPolitics<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2020\/president\/ia\/iowa_democratic_presidential_caucus-6731.html\">polling average<\/a>\u00a0shows her trailing Biden by just 0.3 percent nationally and leading him by 2.7 percent in Iowa.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Boosted by a strong campaign apparatus\u00a0and a bevy of detailed policy proposals, Warren has succeeded in positioning herself as the progressive choice for Democratic voters. In recent weeks, she has appeared to elbow out Bernie Sanders, her chief rival for the party\u2019s most liberal voters. Sanders suffered a heart attack last week, a setback that temporarily derailed his campaign.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Warren\u2019s claim about her dismissal from the Riverdale Elementary School came under scrutiny last week when the journalist Meagan Day of\u00a0<em>Jacobin<\/em>\u00a0magazine noted that Warren\u2019s story appeared to have changed over the years. Day pointed to a 2007\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/globetrotter.berkeley.edu\/people7\/Warren\/warren-con1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/globetrotter.berkeley.edu\/people7\/Warren\/warren-con1.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1570563146888000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGbRldrKkXtPy4JXuUHW7zkyN1DEw\">interview<\/a>\u00a0Warren gave at the University of California-Berkeley in which she suggested that she left her teaching job after realizing the graduate school classes required for her to obtain a teaching certificate weren\u2019t going to &#8220;work out for [her].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I went back to graduate school and took a couple of courses in education and said, \u2018I don&#8217;t think this is going to work out for me,\u2019&#8221; Warren said in the 2007 interview. &#8220;I was pregnant with my first baby, so I had a baby and stayed home for a couple of years, and I was really casting about, thinking, \u2018What am I going to do?\u2019 My husband&#8217;s view of it was, \u2018Stay home. We have children, we&#8217;ll have more children, you&#8217;ll love this.\u2019 And I was very restless about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Warren&#8217;s book,\u00a0<em>A Fighting Chance<\/em>,\u00a0published a year after she was sworn in as a senator in 2013, tells something of a different story, though the two aren\u2019t necessarily incompatible. &#8220;By the end of the school year, I was pretty obviously pregnant,&#8221; Warren wrote in the book. &#8220;The principal did what I think a lot of principals did back then\u2014wished me good luck, didn\u2019t ask me back the next school year, and hired someone else for the job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Warren\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/facts.elizabethwarren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/HoustonFacultyCandidateProfile.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/facts.elizabethwarren.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/HoustonFacultyCandidateProfile.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1570563146888000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEARkoLgBWkfs6dMtKAJ3JhPsyFrg\">worked<\/a>\u00a0as a speech pathologist at Riverdale Elementary School in New Jersey during the 1970-71 school year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Board of Education minutes show a part-time contract for her first year of teaching received unanimous approval during an August 1970 board meeting.\u00a0Meeting minutes from\u00a0November\u00a01970\u00a0confirm Warren\u2019s account that she was working on an &#8220;emergency&#8221; teaching certificate, showing unanimous approval &#8220;that a provisional certificate be requested for Mrs. Elizabeth Warren in speech therapy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Toward the end of Warren\u2019s first year on the job, in April 1971, the board approved her contract for the following school year, the meeting minutes show. Two months later, the meeting minutes indicate that Warren had tendered her resignation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The resignation of Mrs. Elizabeth Warren, speech correctionist effective June 30, 1971 was accepted with regret,&#8221; the June 16, 1971, minutes say.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There are no further mentions of Warren in Riverdale Board of Education meeting minutes, according to a spokesman for the board.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Scrutiny of Warren\u2019s explanation for her jump from teaching to law comes months after the Massachusetts senator steadied her campaign after a rocky start.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In October, two months before her campaign launch, Warren executed a botched attempt to put questions about her claims to Native American heritage behind her by releasing the results of a DNA test. The results, which showed she has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/scientist-warren-1-32th-1-512th-native-american-heritage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/scientist-warren-1-32th-1-512th-native-american-heritage\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1570563146888000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGtiowiIMcnj5nApu9RaBl7J65P-Q\">minimal Cherokee ancestry<\/a>, did little to quell the controversy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She went on to issue a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elizabeth-warren-apology-controversial-dna-test-native-american-heritage-2019-08-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elizabeth-warren-apology-controversial-dna-test-native-american-heritage-2019-08-19\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1570563146888000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG3WmZZ6G_YR5gzfhoOyi1Dwi5wFg\">\u00a0public apology<\/a>\u00a0for taking the test in the first place.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;I have listened, and I have learned a lot. And I\u2019m grateful for the many conversations we\u2019ve had together,&#8221; Warren told a Native American audience in Iowa in mid-August.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Though many on both sides of the aisle counted her out due to her handling of the issue, Warren has managed not only to bounce back but to climb to the top of the field.
