San Francisco officials brand NRA a \u2018domestic terrorist organization\u2019<\/h1>\n

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution declaring the National Rifle Association a \u201cdomestic terrorist organization\u201d and urged the federal government to do the same \u2013 the latest escalation in the\u00a0heated rhetoric from Democrats<\/a>\u00a0regarding the NRA in\u00a0the wake of several deadly mass shootings.<\/p>\n

The resolution<\/a>, which passed Tuesday and says\u00a0the U.S. is \u201cplagued by an epidemic of gun violence,\u201d accuses the NRA of using \u201cits considerable wealth and organization strength to promote gun ownership and incite gun owners to acts of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll countries have violent and hateful people, but only in America do we give them ready access to assault weapons and large-capacity magazines thanks, in large part, to the National Rifle Association\u2019s influence,\u201d the resolution says.<\/p>\n

The document resolves to assess the relationships that those who do business with the city have with the group and says \u201cthe City and County of San Francisco should take every reasonable step to limit those entities who do business with the City and County of San Francisco from doing business with this domestic terrorist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The resolution cites the\u00a0July mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, in which three people were killed.\u00a0KTVU reports<\/a>\u00a0that the resolution\u2019s author wrote the text after that shooting.<\/p>\n

The NRA responded by calling the resolution a stunt that was distracting from the city\u2019s myriad of social problems.<\/p>\n

“This ludicrous stunt by the Board of Supervisors is an effort to distract from the real problems facing San Francisco, such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse and skyrocketing petty crime, to name a few,\u201d the statement said, according to\u00a0KTVU<\/a>. \u201cThe NRA will continue working to protect the constitutional rights of all freedom-loving Americans.”<\/p>\n

The measure comes as Democrats across the country are ramping up calls to crack down on gun ownership, in response to deadly mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and western Texas. Some presidential candidates have\u00a0proposed\u00a0mandatory buyback programs, notably Beto O’Rourke who bluntly told reporters that would be the plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be really clear that that\u2019s exactly what we are going to do,\u201d O\u2019Rourke said. \u201cAmericans who own AR-15s, AK-47s, will have to sell them to the government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Republicans, however, have noted that gun violence is still rampant in major cities like Chicago that have strict gun laws in place.<\/p>\n

\u201cGun control doesn\u2019t work. Look at Chicago. Disarming law-abiding citizens isn\u2019t the answer,\u201d Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas,\u00a0tweeted Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n
