Jeffrey Epstein feared cellmate, a muscle-bound ex-cop charged in murder who was moved before financier’s death: report<\/h1>\n

A hulking ex-cop\u00a0facing the death penalty on\u00a0federal\u00a0<\/a>murder<\/a>\u00a0and drug charges was reportedly\u00a0Jeffrey Epstein’s<\/a>\u00a0cellmate\u00a0at\u00a0Manhattan<\/a>‘s Metropolitan Correctional Center \u2014 and\u00a0an official\u00a0says\u00a0Epstein\u00a0feared the\u00a0former police officer, who was questioned after the disgraced financier’s\u00a0apparent suicide attempt last month and who was transferred out of Epstein’s cell shortly before the 66-year-old died early Saturday.<\/p>\n

Nicholas Tartaglione, who’d been a\u00a0Briarcliffe Manor cop in\u00a0Westchester County<\/a>,\u00a0N.Y.<\/a>,\u00a0was charged in 2016 with the deaths of four men<\/a>\u00a0stemming from\u00a0an alleged\u00a0cocaine drug conspiracy<\/a>. Epstein was reportedly housed at the MCC federal lockup with the 51-year-old former cop after his July arrest for sex trafficking.<\/p>\n

Tartaglione was transferred out of Epstein’s cell in the facility’s Special Housing Unit \u2013\u00a0a heavily secured part of the MCC that separates high-profile inmates from the general population \u2013\u00a0at some point\u00a0before Epstein’s death,\u00a0The Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0reported.\u00a0It was not clear why Tartaglione was transferred, or precisely when. The most recent inmate assigned to Epstein’s cell was transferred on Friday, just\u00a0hours before his death, but it wasn’t immediately known if that inmate was Tartaglione.<\/p>\n

Multiple reports suggest apparent friction between Epstein and Tartaglione in the short time the two men lived together.<\/p>\n

A little more than two weeks before his death, Epstein was placed on\u00a0suicide watch<\/a>\u00a0and required to have daily psychiatric evaluations after being\u00a0discovered in his cell semi-conscious with bruising on his neck. At the end of July, after a week of the evaluations, Epstein was reportedly\u00a0taken off suicide watch<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Though a suicide attempt was suspected of causing the injuries, sources at the time\u00a0told WNBC<\/a>\u00a0that authorities\u00a0hadn’t ruled out an assault on Epstein, and an inmate, identified as Tartaglione, was questioned about the incident.<\/p>\n

Tartaglione reportedly told officials he didn’t see anything related to the apparent suicide attempt and maintained\u00a0he didn’t touch Epstein. Bruce Barket, an attorney for the former cop, said the two men were “in the same unit and doing well,” adding\u00a0rumors Tartaglione may have\u00a0attacked Epstein are\u00a0“absolutely not true.”<\/p>\n

“Any suggestion that Mr. Tartaglione assaulted anyone is a complete fabrication,” Barket said in a statement,\u00a0according to<\/a>\u00a0the Journal News.\u00a0“This story is being leaked to retaliate against Mr. Tartaglione for complaining to the court about the deplorable conditions at the MCC.”<\/p>\n

Barket suggested the allegations about his client may have been leaked by someone \u201ctrying to embarrass Epstein and cast some shade on Nick.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, a law enforcement source\u00a0told the New York Daily News<\/a>\u00a0last month that Tartaglione claimed he helped Epstein after he found him unconscious in his cell during his reported suicide attempt.<\/p>\n

The source seemingly confirmed Barket’s assertions about the “deplorable conditions” at the facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got a guy who is a millionaire who is now living among rats and mold and wants to go home,\u201d the source said. \u201cThis is a disgusting place and the people there, they treat you disgusting. Who wouldn\u2019t be suicidal in that kind of place? You have a silver spoon in your mouth and then you\u2019re put in a cesspool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barket didn’t dispute what Tartaglione allegedly claimed. He did tell the Daily News his client and Epstein “became more than cordial,” and even went so far as to say the two “became friends.”<\/p>\n

But regardless, Epstein indeed might have been trying to get away from Tartaglione, E.O. Young, the national president of the Council of Prison Locals C-33, told the Post.<\/p>\n

Tartaglione is\u00a0awaiting trial after investigators said\u00a0he was involved in the kidnapping and killing of four men in 2016. In February 2018, while being held at MCC, Tartaglione himself was assaulted,\u00a0the Journal News<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n

JEFFREY EPSTEIN’S APPARENT SUICIDE IN FEDERAL LOCKUP RAISES QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In the 2018 attack, Barket said\u00a0Tartaglione required\u00a0reconstructive surgery after an eye socket bone was fractured. The attorney\u00a0said at the time that, in the Special Housing Unit at MCC, where Epstein later was also\u00a0housed, Tartaglione was “quite literally in a box staring at walls…Not surprisingly his mental health has declined.”<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors reportedly plan to seek the death penalty against Tartaglione.<\/p>\n

Epstein was being held on\u00a0child sex\u00a0trafficking<\/a>\u00a0and conspiracy charges after his\u00a0July arrest.\u00a0Prosecutors said he sexually abused dozens of young girls in his New York and Florida residences\u00a0between 2002 and 2005. Epstein pleaded not guilty and\u00a0faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n

Famous, high-profile and notorious prisoners\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as well as\u00a0those accused of sex crimes against children \u2014\u00a0are often given extra protection against attacks from other prisoners. But it was not immediately clear what specific precautions, if any, were taken in Epstein\u2019s case.<\/p>\n
