has investment in 5G suddenly gone &#8216;bearish&#8217;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\">S&amp;P Bearish on 5G, Tesla\u2019s Coil and the T-Mobile Merger\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!--more-->by Renee Parsons<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The FCC, the telecoms and cooperating MSM continue their resolute pr campaign to sell 5G to an unsuspecting American public as if the technology is up and running at effortless full capacity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The truth is that even as \u2018spotty\u2019 coverage is being established in large urban markets, the telecoms are well aware that there are fundamental <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/real-world-5g-not-ready-for-primetime-in-2019\/\"><span class=\"s2\">uncertainties<\/span><\/a> yet to be addressed which may take years before widespread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/real-world-5g-not-ready-for-primetime-in-2019\/\"><span class=\"s2\">distribution<\/span><\/a> can be accomplished. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The industry is driven by the hard reality that consumer indifference to increased data speed may be enough to threaten a return on their $275 billion investment thereby encouraging the telecoms to manufacture an insatiable demand for some new digital bells and whistles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is not to say that 5G is in jeopardy of being developed but that its cellular identity may be amended to focus more on the 30 GHz and higher projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The reality is, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/meet-the-team\/us\/smfulton3\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Scott Fulton<\/span><\/a>, no single, simple way to create a new wireless technology on the scale of 5G.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fulton compares the upgrade from 4G to 5G as akin to going from a telegraph to a fax machine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As he explains, a wireless generation is a combination of technologies, all with multiple dimensions and differing standards, that must be integrated to form one mobile technological entity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/what-is-5g-everything-you-need-to-know\/\"><span class=\"s2\">5G concept<\/span><\/a> is not conducive to plugging one new generation into another but requires a level of co-existence as one merges with another, as new standards integrate with the old standards \u2013 all of which may take years. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As we know from the National Security Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/trump-team-debates-nationalizing-5g-network-f1e92a49-60f2-4e3e-acd4-f3eb03d910ff.html\"><span class=\"s2\">power point<\/span><\/a>, 5G is being built from the ground up as a brand new entity. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In other words, creating a new generation of digital technology is a lot more complicated with<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>rollout not ready for some years to come, even as the push for <a href=\"https:\/\/newsvire.com\/the-realities-of-rural-5g-deployment-in-the-us\/\"><span class=\"s2\">6G<\/span><\/a> begins to muddy the waters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition, a recent Standard and Poor\u2019s Global Ratings gave credence to the possibility that the telecoms are taking on more than they are able to deliver:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c<i>for U.S. telecommunications companies, we have a <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investors.com\/news\/technology\/att-verizon-5g-wireless-iot\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>cautious view<\/i><\/span><\/a><i> on 5G wireless.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We believe that <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i>accelerated deployments could hurt balance sheets <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>that are already stretched because of mergers and acquisitions, mature industry conditions, and competitive pressures<\/i>.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">In a warning to investors, S&amp;P cited \u201c<i>revenue growth associated with 5G will be <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i>constrained<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201d as they questioned whether consumers are willing to spend more just to experience faster speeds on new devices. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>S&amp;P continued <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<i>our forecast for 5G investment and customer appetite is <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.techapeek.com\/2019\/06\/30\/real-world-5g-not-ready-for-primetime-in-2019\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>bearish<\/i><\/span><\/a><i>, so any incremental increase cost or delay should be nonmaterial to the ratings\u201d<\/i> and that \u201c<i>the bulk of the (Internet of Things) revenue opportunities <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i>may not materialize for at least five to 10 years\u201d <\/i> as AT&amp;T and Verizon could wait up to ten year for a pay back on their investment<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Tesla\u2019s Coil<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1891, the brilliant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/inventions\/nikola-tesla\"><span class=\"s2\">Nikola Tesla<\/span><\/a>, Yugoslavian physicist, engineer and inventor created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/46745-how-tesla-coil-works.html\"><span class=\"s2\">Tesla Coil<\/span><\/a> which became the <i>first high voltage transmission of wireless electricity<\/i> utilizing an electro magnetic force.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Coil radiated sufficient volts of artificial lightening to illuminate a fluorescent bulb with no electrical wire connection as Tesla also dared theorize on the possibility of death rays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some believe that Tesla derived his genius from interstellar spheres as he once suggested that \u201c<i>if you want to find the secrets of the Universe, think in terms of energy frequency and vibration<\/i>\u201d while displaying an intuitive recognition of the existence of the <a href=\"http:\/\/solar-center.stanford.edu\/SID\/activities\/ionosphere.html\"><span class=\"s2\">ionosphere<\/span><\/a>, a premonition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www-spof.gsfc.nasa.gov\/Education\/wplasma.html\"><span class=\"s2\">plasma<\/span><\/a> as the fourth state of matter and what today has been dubbed \u2018free\u2019 energy. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More famous for <a href=\"https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/nikola-tesla.htm\"><span class=\"s2\">revolutionizing<\/span><\/a> our understanding of electricity with his patent for ac (alternating) current, his prescient quote<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201c\u2026<i>in the Universe <\/i><\/span><span class=\"s3\"><i>there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration<\/i><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><i>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core but I know that it exists<\/i>\u201d further suggests a consciousness that had penetrated a \u201csecret core\u201d as another level of reality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today, ac is also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.answers.com\/Q\/What_is_the_difference_between_alternating_current_and_radio_frequency_waves\"><span class=\"s2\">radio frequency waves<\/span><\/a> in the telecommunication world with the difference being the level of frequency on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfpage.com\/what-are-radio-frequency-bands-and-its-uses\/\"><span class=\"s2\">spectrum<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After having his inventions ridiculed, laughed at and\/or stolen by <a href=\"https:\/\/mentalfloss.com\/article\/30140\/acdc-tesla%25E2%2580%2593edison-feud\"><span class=\"s2\">Thomas Edison<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/teslauniverse.com\/nikola-tesla\/articles\/tesla-invented-radio-not-marconi\"><span class=\"s2\">Marconi<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritynetworth.com\/articles\/entertainment-articles\/in-1897-nikola-tesla-tore-up-a-contract-that-would-have-made-him-the-worlds-first-billionaire\/\"><span class=\"s2\">George Westinghouse<\/span><\/a> and lastly, JP Morgan who failed to grasp the significance of a <a href=\"https:\/\/teslauniverse.com\/nikola-tesla\/timeline\/1901-tesla-partners-jp-morgan\"><span class=\"s2\">global wireless communication network<\/span><\/a>, Tesla experienced how a small independent inventor could be squeezed out by the rapacious robber baron class which continues to this day. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After his death in 1943, some of his remaining paperwork was confiscated by the US government and some became enshrined in a museum in Yugoslavia. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the spirit of Tesla lives on through ingenious inventors of the day, there is reportedly a way to connect an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fVI15ymb57s\"><span class=\"s2\">android phone<\/span><\/a> to the Internet without wifi service.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/marketintelligence\/en\/news-insights\/latest-news-headlines\/52610461\">T-Mobile Sprint Merger<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Speaking of robber barons, the recent Department of Justice approval of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geekwire.com\/2019\/justice-department-approves-t-mobiles-26b-merger-sprint\/\"><span class=\"s2\">$26 billion merger<\/span><\/a> between T-Mobile and Sprint reduced four major national wireless carriers to three thus creating another impossibly unwieldy mega-monster titan while assuring that Rural America\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/05\/31\/digital-gap-between-rural-and-nonrural-america-persists\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Digital Divide<\/span><\/a> will continue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a late hour concession to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2019\/05\/21\/t-mobile-sprint-merger-depends-on-promise-to-bring-5g-to-rural-america\/\"><span class=\"s2\">rural consumers<\/span><\/a>, one of the divestiture requirements included the sale of \u201ccertain spectrum assets,\u201d 20,000 cell sites, retail storefronts and total use of the T-Mobile network for seven years to Dish, a Colorado-based satellite TV provider as it builds its own 5G network in the expectation of ultimately becoming a fourth major carrier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With the ink barely dry, T-Mobile CEO John Legere wasted no time in asserting that T Mobile\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>acquisition of Spectrum would offer a \u201c<i>true nationwide capability that this country needs that nobody else has<\/i>\u201d and that owning all three frequency bands, each containing different properties and ability to transmit data, is crucial to 5G\u2019s success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Radio Frequency <a href=\"http:\/\/magazine.connectedremag.com\/publication\/?i=548265&amp;article_id=3254334&amp;view=articleBrowser&amp;ver=html5#%7B%2522issue_id%2522:548265,%2522view%2522:%2522articleBrowser%2522,%2522article_id%2522:%25223254334%2522%7D\"><span class=\"s2\">Spectrum<\/span><\/a> is a fixed, finite resource on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electromagnetic_spectrum\"><span class=\"s2\">electromagnetic spectrum<\/span><\/a> that enables wireless telecommunication to function. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With a radio frequency from 3 KHz to 300 GHz (gigahertz), 5G will utilize low and mid band frequencies as well as the higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfwireless-world.com\/Tutorials\/5G-millimeter-wave-frequency-bands.html\"><span class=\"s2\">mm Wave<\/span><\/a> frequency which is an essential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itbusinessedge.com\/blogs\/data-and-telecom\/the-marketing-of-5g.html\"><span class=\"s2\">indicator<\/span><\/a> as to the true purpose and intent of 5G.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In other words, while T-Mobil has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itbusinessedge.com\/blogs\/data-and-telecom\/the-marketing-of-5g.html\"><span class=\"s2\">shrewdly accumulated<\/span><\/a> all three bands to create what it believes will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itbusinessedge.com\/blogs\/data-and-telecom\/the-marketing-of-5g.html\"><span class=\"s2\">unbeatable<\/span><\/a> in the marketplace, AT&amp;T and Verizon are no match for their market dominance. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Currently, both Verizon and AT&amp;T own low band spectrum and the more expensive and complex mmWave. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"s3\">Neither owns any of the highly desirable, more versatile, Mid-band Spectrum<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> necessary for urban and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naco.org\/articles\/senators-why-rush-5g-while-rural-areas-ignored\"><span class=\"s2\">rural<\/span><\/a> usage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Legere then proceeded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/platform\/amp\/2019\/7\/26\/8930691\/tmobile-ceo-trashes-verizon-att-5g-plans\"><span class=\"s2\">attack<\/span><\/a> the two remaining carriers as \u201c<i>dead in the water<\/i>\u201d and \u201c<i>lying<\/i>\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>as the merger put T-Mobile in the driver\u2019s seat as Sprint was the only telecom to own any of the mid band spectrum.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The merger gave T-Mobile the opportunity to consolidate all three bands under one company. In addition, at the recent FCC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/5g-craze-continues-the-5g-spectrum-auction-is-starting\/\"><span class=\"s2\">auction<\/span><\/a> in March, T-Mobile spent $840 million to quadruple their mmWave holdings which will facilitate the<em> Internet of Things<\/em>, AI\u2019s and the Directed Energy Weapons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With three remaining carriers there is little real expectation that T-Mobile will live up to its earlier promises to <a href=\"https:\/\/ruralwireless.org\/rwa-calls-new-t-mobile-out-on-rural-5g-buildout-sleight-of-hand\/\"><span class=\"s2\">provide rural America<\/span><\/a> with cellular service and that 99% of the country will be wired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wraltechwire.com\/2019\/05\/20\/fcc-chief-backs-merger-of-t-mobile-sprint-after-5g-rural-internet-access-promises\/\"><span class=\"s2\">within six years<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The cost for installing thousands of miles of fiber cable and 200,000-plus cell sites required to make a 5G network operational will be an extensive project and cost <i>$60 billion more<\/i> than proposed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Still pending is<i> S1699, the <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naco.org\/articles\/senators-why-rush-5g-while-rural-areas-ignored\"><span class=\"s2\"><i>Streamline Small Cell Deployment Act<\/i><\/span><\/a> which will curtail local government role in locating 5G towers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If and when 5G makes it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naco.org\/articles\/senators-why-rush-5g-while-rural-areas-ignored\"><span class=\"s2\">rural America<\/span><\/a>, it promises to be prohibitively expensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\">The last remaining requirement for the merger is final approval by the five-member Federal Communications Commission although their vote is little more than a technicality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The three Republican appointees to the Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmonews.com\/2019\/06\/fcc-commissioner-rosenworcel-uncomfortable-review-t-mobile-sprint-merger\/\"><span class=\"s2\">announced their support<\/span><\/a>, although two of them admitted they had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/7\/26\/6646158\/t-mobile-sprint-merger-justice-department-approves-26-billion-fcc\"><span class=\"s2\">not read the necessary<\/span><\/a> documentation; thereby winning the \u201dBobbing Head Award of the Week.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2026.to be continued <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Renee Parsons<\/i><\/b><i> has been a member of the ACLU\u2019s Florida State Board of Directors and president of the ACLU Treasure Coast Chapter.
