Image source: EPA-EFE<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"ad__wrapper-element\"><\/div>\n<aside id=\"my_spring1\"><\/aside>\n<p>From nearly the start of the protests which began over a proposed extradition bill (which would see Hong Kong citizens under legal accusation potentially extradited to the mainland) interpreted as\u00a0major Chinese overreach inside historically semi-autonomous Hong Kong, officials in Beijing have suggested\u00a0<strong>an &#8220;external plot&#8221; afoot<\/strong>, more recently alleging the hidden hand of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The latest charge made Tuesday by mainland government officials is that the still escalating\u00a0Hong Kong unrest is the\u00a0<strong>&#8220;creation of the US&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0<em>\u2014\u00a0<\/em>something which the Trump admin official speaking under anonymity to Bloomberg firmly denied.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-of-state-michael-r-pompeo-with-david-rubenstein-president-of-the-economic-club-of-washington-d-c\/\">a press interview<\/a>\u00a0that &#8220;protest is appropriate&#8221; and that\u00a0<strong>&#8220;we hope the Chinese will do the right thing&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>regarding respecting Hong Kong&#8217;s historic\u00a0&#8220;one country, two systems&#8221; status. Source: NYT\/Reuters<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last week Chinese military leaders hinted that People&#8217;s Liberation Army troops could be used to quell the protests following widespread reports of vandal attacks on the\u00a0central government\u2019s liaison office in Hong Kong, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/24\/world\/asia\/china-military-hong-kong-taiwan-protests.html\">The New York Times<\/a>. Ministry of National Defense, Senior Col. Wu Qian, said at the time,\u00a0<strong>\u201cThat absolutely cannot be tolerated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For now, few details are known concerning the reported Chinese &#8220;build-up&#8221;\u00a0on the border, which could consist of military forces, as Bloomberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-30\/white-house-eyeing-buildup-of-chinese-forces-on-hong-kong-border\">added to its report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The nature of the Chinese buildup wasn\u2019t clear; the official said that\u00a0<strong>units of the Chinese military or armed police had gathered at the border with Hong Kong<\/strong>.
