Mario Lopez: It’s ‘dangerous’ for parents to support transgender kids<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Mario Lopez<\/a>\u00a0claims that parents who allow their children to live according to their\u00a0self-identified genders<\/a>\u00a0are setting a \u201cdangerous\u201d example.<\/p>\n

Lopez, a father of three, shared his opinions during a June interview on\u00a0The Candace Owens Show<\/em>, a PragerU video series hosted by the 30-year-old conservative figure, but the clips have only recently caught Twitter\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n

During the\u00a040-minute interview<\/a>, Owens brought up the \u201cweird trend\u201d in Hollywood that have celebrities like\u00a0Charlize Theron<\/a>\u00a0taking cues from their children as to how they identify. In April, the\u00a0Long Shot\u00a0<\/em>actress revealed that her 7-year-old child Jackson did not identify as a boy.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I thought she was a boy, too,\u201d Theron told\u00a0the\u00a0Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>. \u201cUntil she looked at me when she was 3 years old and said, \u2018I am not a boy!’\u201d<\/p>\n

Owens told the new\u00a0Access Hollywood<\/em>\u00a0host, \u201cA lot of weird trends come out of Hollywood and one of the weirder ones, for me, is this new trend where celebrities are coming out \u2014 and I know Charlize Theron did this a few weeks ago \u2014 is saying that their child is picking their gender. And this is strange to me, and they say, \u2018Oh, I looked at my child and my child was swimming in a bathtub and looked up and said, \u201cMommy, I\u2019m a boy\u2019\u201d and that\u2019s weird …\u201d<\/p>\n

Owens added that her experience as a nanny has convinced her that children don\u2019t always mean what they say, explaining \u201cI am trying to understand this new Hollywood mentality where they just think their children now have the mental authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am trying to understand it myself, and please don\u2019t lump me into that whole [group],\u201d Lopez responded. \u201cI\u2019m kind of blown away too. Look, I\u2019m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids obviously and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can\u2019t go wrong but at the same time, my God, if you’re 3 years old and you\u2019re saying you\u2019re feeling a certain way or you think you\u2019re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make this determination then, well, OK, then you\u2019re going to a boy or a girl, whatever the case may be … It’s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWhen you\u2019re a kid … you don\u2019t know anything about sexuality yet. You\u2019re just a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Owens said that parents who support their children in this way are narcissists showing off their tolerance, Lopez responded, \u201cI think parents need to allow their kids to be kids but at the same time, you gotta be the adult in the situation. Pause with that and \u2014 I think the formative years is when you start having those discussions and really start making these declarations,\u201d he said, adding air quotes.<\/p>\n

The commentary didn\u2019t earn Lopez any new fans on Twitter.<\/p>\n

The interview demonstrates a misconception of gender expression, says Christia Brown, PhD.<\/a>, a social psychology professor at the University of Kentucky and the author of\u00a0Parenting Beyond Pink & Blue<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSome children who explore non-stereotypical forms of gender expression are transgender, however others just want a flexible gender expression,\u201d Brown tells Yahoo Lifestyle. \u201cKids are drawn to what they find aesthetically pleasing and there\u2019s often not deeper meaning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDangerous\u201d for these children, says Brown, is expecting them to look and act in a way that doesn\u2019t feel natural to them. And conflating sexuality, as Lopez said, with gender expression deepens the confusion.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany transgender people get frustrated when they\u2019re lumped under the\u00a0LGBT<\/a>\u00a0umbrella because for them, their identity is not about sexual orientation,\u201d Brown tells Yahoo Lifestyle.<\/p>\n

What children need, she says, is protection against rhetoric as expressed in Owens\u2019s interview and help feeling empowered.<\/p>\n

Later, Lopez called movements such as #BelieveWomen in support of sexual assault survivors a \u201cdangerous hashtag because people lie and sometimes those people are women.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cGod forbid you have a son out there and a girl may have felt a certain way about a situation \u2014 dismissed, hurt, whatever, and is feeling vengeful and just decides to tell a certain story that\u2019s not even exactly true, come back and hurt that individual.\u201d<\/p>\n

To take women at their word, he told Owens, is \u201cincredibly dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yahoo Lifestyle reached out to Lopez for comment but did not immediately hear back.<\/p>\n
