US women\u2019s football star Megan Rapinoe fired her team into the World Cup semifinals with two goals against France on Friday night, before stating that \u201cyou can\u2019t win a championship without gay players on your team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fresh from a week in which she was involved in a row with President Donald Trump over her comments that she wouldn\u2019t\u00a0\u201cgo to the f*cking White House\u201d<\/em>\u00a0if the US won the World Cup, Rapinoe scored once in each half to see off France 2-1 in Paris and book a semifinal date with England.<\/p>\n

After the game, Rapinoe, who is gay, was asked what the result meant to her coming as it did during Pride month.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t win a championship without gays on your team \u2013 it\u2019s never been done before, ever. That\u2019s science, right there,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>the 33-year-old said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m motivated by people who like me, who are fighting for the same things. I take more energy from that than from trying to prove anyone wrong. That\u2019s draining on yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBut for me, to be gay and fabulous, during Pride month at the World Cup, is nice,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she added.<\/p>\n

Rapinoe\u2019s claims raised some eyebrows online, in particular those of the ever-irascible UK TV personality Piers Morgan.<\/p>\n
