With the hashtag #youknowme, a viral internet campaign was born \u2014 one some are comparing to the famous #MeToo movement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;1 in 4 women have had an abortion,&#8221; wrote Philipps on Twitter early Wednesday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BusyPhilipps\/status\/1128515490559610881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">morning<\/a>. &#8220;Many people think they don&#8217;t know someone who has, but #youknowme. So let&#8217;s do this: if you are also the 1 in 4, let&#8217;s share it and start to end the shame. Use #youknowme and share your truth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The tweet, which has nearly 10,000 retweets and almost 50,000 likes, quickly went viral as women shared their abortions using #youknowme. Some users&#8217; stories centered around emotional tales of sexual abuse or assault.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">1 in 4 women have had an abortion. I was a Sophomore in high school&#8230;dying because of the choice of one man. It was either me or the fetus that was going to die anyway. #youknowme.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;F****** hard for me to put this out but, the condom was removed without my consent &#8211; I was drunk and asked far too late \u2014 and the morning after pill didn&#8217;t work,&#8221; user @alltheseasons_\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alltheseasons_\/status\/1128565841522458624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>. &#8220;#Youknowme and it&#8217;s time I didn&#8217;t feel so ashamed of this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other women explained that they felt they were not ready to take on the responsibility of having a child. &#8220;I had an abortion,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/linseygodfrey\/status\/1129073355942838272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0actress Linsey Godfrey. &#8220;I just simply wasn&#8217;t in a place, financially or emotionally to take that on. I was and still am glad I had that choice because that&#8217;s exactly what it was, it was my choice, my body. #YouKnowMe&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While some users explained they wanted to keep the baby, but it wasn&#8217;t medically possible. &#8220;I was 26, happily married and excited for the pregnancy, &#8221; wrote @seash1492. &#8220;We got a non compatible with life diagnosis &#8211; the skull didn&#8217;t form. We ended the pregnancy at 13 weeks. We made the best choice for us and now have a happy and healthy baby #youknowme #1in4.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many celebrities and public figures joined in on the hashtag, including the former head of Planned Parenthood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CecileRichards\/status\/1129039135203897344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cecile Richards<\/a>, actress\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ambertamblyn\/status\/1129054409676214272\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amber Tamblyn<\/a>, model\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Tess_Holliday\/status\/1129049424909488128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tess Holliday<\/a>\u00a0and former New York gubernatorial candidate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CynthiaNixon\/status\/1128815500195192832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cynthia Nixon.<\/a>\u00a0Nixon shared the story of her mother&#8217;s illegal abortion, as well as the legal abortion of her wife using the hashtag.<\/p>\n<p>Lena Headey, who played\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/lena-headey-talks-about-cersei-blowing-up-the-great-sept-of-baelor-60-minutes-2019-04-14\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Cersei Lannister<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/game-of-thrones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Game of Thrones<\/a>&#8221; even posted a screenshot of Philipps&#8217; tweet to Instagram, using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BxfNvlRBkej\/?utm_source=ig_embed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hashtag in the comment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-small lazyloaded\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\" data-require-callback=\"twitterInit\">\n<div class=\"embed__content-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"SandboxRoot env-bp-350\" data-twitter-event-id=\"4\">\n<div id=\"twitter-widget-4\" class=\"EmbeddedTweet EmbeddedTweet--cta js-clickToOpenTarget tweet-InformationCircle-widgetParent\" lang=\"en\" data-click-to-open-target=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CynthiaNixon\/status\/1128815500195192832\" data-iframe-title=\"Twitter Tweet\" data-scribe=\"page:tweet\" data-twitter-event-id=\"7\">\n<div class=\"EmbeddedTweet-tweetContainer\">\n<div class=\"EmbeddedTweet-tweet\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The #youknowme campaign isn&#8217;t the first time Philipps has spoken about her abortion and tried to raise awareness of restrictive anti-abortion legislation. During last Tuesday&#8217;s episode of her late-night talk show &#8220;Busy Tonight,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/busy-philipps-says-james-franco-assaulted-her-while-filming-freaks-and-geeks\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Philipps<\/a>\u00a0spoke candidly about her opposition to Georgia&#8217;s new controversial abortion law, which would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heartbeat-bill-in-georgia-abortion-law-signing-brian-kemp-to-sign-georgia-fetal-heartbeat-bill-today-2019-05-07-live\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">prohibit abortion after a heartbeat is detected in an embryo<\/a>. That is something that usually happens between five and six weeks into a women&#8217;s pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>During the emotional message, the star spoke to why the issue is so important to her \u2014 because she had an abortion as a teen. The language she used appears to be a jumping off point for the hashtag. &#8220;The statistic is that one in four women will have an abortion before age 45,&#8221; she said to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UBDIXa568XY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">camera<\/a>\u00a0last week. &#8220;That statistic sometimes surprises people, and maybe you&#8217;re sitting there thinking, &#8216;I don&#8217;t know a woman who would have an abortion,&#8217; she said. &#8220;Well, you know me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She also spoke about her abortion in her 2018 book &#8220;This Will Only Hurt a Little.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Both the Alabama and Georgia laws are the latest in an\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ohio-abortion-heartbeat-bill-pregnant-11-year-old-rape-victim-barred-abortion-after-new-ohio-abortion-bill-2019-05-13\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">onslaught<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of state-level anti-abortion legislation that aim to dismantle\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-cbs-news-covered-roe-v-wade-in-1973\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Roe v.
