{"id":120462,"date":"2019-04-08T13:31:05","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T17:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=120462"},"modified":"2019-04-08T13:31:05","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T17:31:05","slug":"why-is-motel-6-paying-6-mil-to-wash-state-shouldnt-they-be-getting-an-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=120462","title":{"rendered":"Why is Motel 6 paying $6 Mil to Wash State&#8212;Shouldn&#8217;t they be getting an award!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Motel 6 Will Pay $12 Million to Washington State for Cooperating with Federal Immigration Officials<\/h1>\n<p><!--more--><div id=\"attachment_120463\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/31f6de_immigrant-arrests-motel-41302-sept-14-2017-file-photo-shows-motel-in-phoenix-640x429.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120463\" class=\"size-full wp-image-120463\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/31f6de_immigrant-arrests-motel-41302-sept-14-2017-file-photo-shows-motel-in-phoenix-640x429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/31f6de_immigrant-arrests-motel-41302-sept-14-2017-file-photo-shows-motel-in-phoenix-640x429.jpg 640w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/31f6de_immigrant-arrests-motel-41302-sept-14-2017-file-photo-shows-motel-in-phoenix-640x429-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-120463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AP Photo\/Anita Snow<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>by Penny Star<br \/>\nBreitbart.com<\/p>\n<h3>The Motel 6 hotel chain will pay $12 million to the state of Washington because several of its properties in the state reported to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that some guests could be in the United States illegally.<\/h3>\n<p>In 2013, the King County Washington City Council\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/\">passed<\/a>\u00a0an\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/mkcclegisearch.kingcounty.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=1445647&amp;GUID=19C2080B-1877-43FA-9B5B-B725F94F428D&amp;Options=&amp;Search=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\">ordinance<\/a>\u00a0that prohibits law enforcement from cooperating with ICE unless a warrant has been issued for an individual.<\/p>\n<p>Washington state Office of the Attorney General\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"http:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/news\/news-releases\/ag-ferguson-motel-6-will-pay-12m-violating-privacy-tens-thousands-washingtonians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the settlement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany Motel 6 locations in Washington turned over the personal information of their guests to ICE on a daily basis without requiring a warrant,\u201d the press release said. \u201cFrom 2015 to 2017, seven Washington locations shared the personal information of approximately 80,000 guests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach time Motel 6 released a guest list, it included the private information of every guest at the hotel without their knowledge or consent, violating their expectation of privacy,\u201d the press release said.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Attorney General said because of Motel 6\u2019s cooperation with ICE \u201cmany Washington consumers faced questioning from ICE, detainment or deportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMotel 6\u2019s actions tore families apart and violated the privacy rights of tens of thousands of Washingtonians,\u201d Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a statement. \u201cOur resolution holds Motel 6 accountable for illegally handing over guests\u2019 private information without a warrant. Any other business that tries to violate Washingtonians\u2019 right to privacy can expect to hear from my office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National Public Radio (NPR) said it is the second settlement Motel 6 has reached with the state in recent months and the corporation also settled a separate lawsuit in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMotel 6 has also signed a legally binding commitment to no longer share guest information without a warrant at any of its locations nationwide, a practice the chain says it has already ended,\u201d NPR reported.<\/p>\n<p>NPR\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/04\/05\/710137783\/motel-6-to-pay-12-million-after-improperly-giving-guest-lists-to-ice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer\">reported<\/a>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The company told NPR in an emailed statement that, as part of the agreement, it would, \u201ccontinue to enforce its guest privacy policy, which prohibits the sharing of guest information except in cases where a judicially enforceable warrant or subpoena is present, or local law requires this information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company has also implemented a system of additional controls to ensure corporate oversight and compliance in cases where law enforcement requests are made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In November, Motel 6 settled a separate lawsuit filed in Arizona by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. That lawsuit identified eight Latino plaintiffs who were detained, including one who was deported.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Office of the Attorney General gave two examples of men who were in the country illegally whose families faced \u201cfinancial strain\u201d after they were detained.
