Facebook shares\u00a0tumbled into the red<\/strong>\u00a0after Bloomberg reported that\u00a0user data is still showing up in places it shouldn\u2019t.<\/strong><\/p>\n As Bloomberg reports,\u00a0researchers at UpGuard, a cybersecurity firm,\u00a0found troves\u00a0of user information hiding in plain sight, inadvertently posted publicly on\u00a0Amazon.com\u2019s cloud computing servers.<\/strong><\/p>\n The discovery shows that a year after the Cambridge Analytica scandal exposed how unsecure and widely disseminated Facebook users\u2019 information is online, companies that control that information at every step still haven\u2019t done enough to seal up private data.<\/p>\n Coming just days after\u00a0Zuckerberg urged the government to take over regulating his responsibilities and remove his accountabilities,<\/a>Bloomberg notes that in one instance,\u00a0Mexico City-based media company Cultura Colectiva openly stored 540 million records on Facebook users,\u00a0<\/strong>including identification numbers, comments, reactions and account names.<\/p>\n The problem of accidental public storage could be more extensive than those two instances.\u00a0UpGuard found 100,000 open Amazon-hosted databases for various types of data<\/strong>, some of which it expects aren\u2019t supposed to be public.<\/p>\n \u201cThe public doesn\u2019t realize yet that these high-level systems administrators and developers, the people that are custodians of this data,\u00a0they are being either risky or lazy or cutting corners,<\/strong>\u201d said Chris Vickery, director of cyber risk research at UpGuard.<\/p>\n “Not enough care is being put into the security side of big data.”<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Notably, the\u00a0UpGuard page\u00a0<\/a>that Bloomberg is referencing is now ‘404’…<\/p>\n A Facebook spokesperson said that the company\u2019s policies prohibit storing Facebook information in a public database. Once it was alerted to the issue,\u00a0Facebook worked with Amazon to take down the databases, the spokesperson said,\u00a0<\/strong>adding that Facebook is committed to working with the developers on its platform to protect people\u2019s data.<\/p>\n Bloomberg points out that\u00a0this latest example shows how the data security issues can be amplified by another trend<\/strong>: the transition many companies have made from running operations predominantly in their own data centers to cloud-computing services operated by Amazon,\u00a0Microsoft,\u00a0Alphabet\u2019s Google, and others.<\/p>\n And in the wake of this latest debacle – and last year’s\u00a0security breaches<\/a>\u00a0– it is quite possible that, like Myspace and Friendster, Facebook is not long for this world…<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2019-04-03_10-23-13.jpg?itok=Ni5x0fMY\")
