A new poll among Democratic Iowa voters shows former Vice President Joe Biden and Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders leading the race neck-and-neck.<\/p>\n

Following behind Biden and Sanders, South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg is surging into third place.<\/p>\n

The poll released Sunday was\u00a0conducted by Emerson College<\/a>\u00a0and shows\u00a0Biden<\/a>\u00a0narrowly leading the crowded field at 25 percent with Sanders right behind him at 24 percent. Buttigieg currently sits at 11 percent ahead of California Sen. The poll surveyed 249 likely Iowa Democratic caucus-goers and was conducted between March 21-24. The margin of error is 6.2 percent.<\/p>\n

The poll is in stark contrast to one conducted by Emerson in January, which showed Buttigieg polling at 0 percent. But the rising progressive star,\u00a0affectionately known<\/a>\u00a0as \u201cMayor Pete,\u201d has gained traction in recent months, as the 2020 Democratic field begins to take shape.\u00a0(RELATED: Biden, Abrams Respond To Claims They\u2019ll Run A Joint 2020 Ticket)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

A former Navy Intelligence officer, the 37-year-old Buttigieg speaks seven different languages and is also\u00a0seeking to become<\/a>\u00a0the first openly gay president in American history. Last month, Buttigieg\u2019s campaign\u00a0announced<\/a>that he had enough unique donors to qualify for the debate stage.<\/p>\n
