2020: Pete Buttigieg: Abolish Electoral College<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Pete Buttigieg, the Fort Bend, Indiana, mayor who announced his 2020 presidential exploratory committee on Wednesday, believes the Electoral College must be abolished.<\/h2>\n

Buttigieg told reporters on Wednesday that he wants to do \u201caway with the Electoral College\u201d because there is \u201cnot a lot of common-sense justification for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he would support a Constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral college and mentioned former Indiana Senator Birch Bayh\u2019s (D) efforts to amend the Constitution to abolish the Electoral college.<\/p>\n

After President Donald Trump\u2019s election, prominent Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have been more vocal about getting rid of the Electoral College.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou won\u2019t be surprised to hear that I passionately believe it\u2019s time to abolish the Electoral College,\u201d Clinton recently\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0in op-ed for the\u00a0Atlantic<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez even linked the Electoral College to slavery when she said last year that it is \u201cwell past time\u201d to eliminate the Electoral College.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is well past time we eliminate the Electoral College, a shadow of slavery\u2019s power on America today that undermines our nation as a democratic republic,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0last year.
\nAs Democrats running for president try to race each other to the left, Buttigieg also said he was for single-payer health care and\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0Yahoo News that he wants to \u201cmake every home in the United States a \u2018net zero\u2019 energy consumer\u201d by having the federal government retrofit homes with solar panels.<\/p>\n

\u201cUncle Sam is gonna mail you a kit,\u201d he reportedly said.<\/p>\n

But when speaking about job retraining programs, he sounded a bit like former North Carolina Senator John R. Edwards (D) in the 2004 presidential primaries, reportedly telling Yahoo that some Democrats do not understand that their \u201cwell-meaning\u201d job-retraining rhetoric may not go over well with blue-collar workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you understand yourself as a machinist,\u201d Buttigieg reportedly said, \u201cand some well-meaning center-left program comes along and tells you, \u2018From now on, you\u2019re going to be a nurse\u2019s aide,\u2019 that just may not be how you think you fit in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
