{"id":115674,"date":"2019-02-06T07:06:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-06T11:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=115674"},"modified":"2019-02-06T07:06:43","modified_gmt":"2019-02-06T11:06:43","slug":"pope-francis-says-priests-kept-nuns-as-sex-slaves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/?p=115674","title":{"rendered":"Pope Francis says priests kept nuns as sex slaves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--more--><div id=\"attachment_75403\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/themillenniumreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/105498210_mediaitem105490074.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75403\" class=\"size-full wp-image-75403\" src=\"http:\/\/themillenniumreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/105498210_mediaitem105490074.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">EPA &#8211; Pope Francis made the admission while visiting the Middle East<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>BBC<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body__introduction\"><strong>Pope Francis has admitted that clerics have sexually abused nuns, and in one case they were kept as sex slaves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He said in that case his predecessor, Pope Benedict, was forced to shut down an entire congregation of nuns who were being abused by priests.<\/p>\n<p>It is thought to be the first time that Pope Francis has acknowledged the sexual abuse of nuns by the clergy.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Church was attempting to address the problem but said it was &#8220;still going on&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Last November, the Catholic Church&#8217;s global organisation for nuns denounced the &#8220;culture of silence and secrecy&#8221; that prevented them from speaking out.<\/p>\n<p>The Pope&#8217;s comments come amid long-running allegations of sexual abuse of children and young men by priests at the Church.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What did Pope Francis say?<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking to reporters while on <a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-47118892\">a historic tour of the Middle East<\/a> on Tuesday, the pontiff admitted that the Church had an issue, the roots of which lie in &#8220;seeing women as second class&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said that priests and bishops had abused nuns, but said the Church was aware of the &#8220;scandal&#8221; and was &#8220;working on it&#8221;, adding that a number of clerics had been suspended.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a path that we&#8217;ve been on,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pope Benedict had the courage to dissolve a female congregation which was at a certain level, because this slavery of women had entered it &#8211; slavery, even to the point of sexual slavery &#8211; on the part of clerics or the founder.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pope Francis said sexual abuse of nuns was an ongoing problem, but happened largely in &#8220;certain congregations, predominantly new ones&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s still taking place because it&#8217;s not as though the moment you become aware of something it goes away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Where is the abuse said to have taken place?<\/h2>\n<p>The female congregation dissolved in 2005 under Pope Benedict was the Community of St Jean, which was based in France, Alessandro Gisotti of the Vatican press office told CBS News.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, the Community of St Jean admitted that priests had behaved &#8220;in ways that went against chastity&#8221; with several women in the order, according to the French Roman Catholic newspaper La Croix.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate case in India last year, <a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-45600402\">a bishop was arrested over allegations that he raped a nun 13 times<\/a> between 2014 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who headed the diocese in Jalandhar in the northern state of Punjab, has denied the accusations.<\/p>\n<p>In Chile, reports of abuse of nuns carried out by priests led the Vatican to launch an investigation last year.
