The low of 45 below zero F in International Falls, Minnesota, shattered the day\u2019s record of 36 below zero F from 1966.<\/p>\n<p>As harsh as Sunday morning was, the worst is yet to come as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/what-is-a-polar-vortex\/21793077\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polar vortex<\/a>\u00a0gets displaced from the Arctic Circle and dives into the Midwest in the wake of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/early-week-storm-to-lay-swath-of-snow-slippery-travel-across-midwestern-us\/70007250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disruptive snowstorm early this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the risks of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/the-dangers-of-frostbite-how-to-prevent-spot-and-treat-it\/70003735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frostbite and hypothermia<\/a>, residents will be faced with high heating costs and the potential for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/how-to-protect-prevent-pipes-from-freezing-in-frigid-cold-winter-weather\/55374649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frozen and bursting water pipes<\/a>, dead car batteries and school closures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accuweather.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/f167732\/2147483647\/resize\/590x\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faccuweather-bsp.s3.amazonaws.com%2F4b%2F9d%2F65b23e2f4155b8ceb094c226a25c%2Frealfeels-this-week.56.42%20AM.png\" alt=\"RealFeels This Week\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The cold can be life-threatening for any person or animal without a proper way to stay warm.<\/p>\n<p>The Arctic blast will plunge across the Midwest early this week with the most extreme conditions anticipated at midweek.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some locations in the Midwest will be below zero continuously for 48-72 hours,&#8221; according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Mike Doll.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"\"><b>RELATED:<\/b>\u00a0<em><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/early-week-storm-to-lay-swath-of-snow-slippery-travel-across-midwestern-us\/70007250\" target=\"_top\">Snowstorm cancels hundreds of flights in Chicago, triggers dangerous travel across Midwest<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/potentially-major-snowstorm-to-threaten-new-england-at-midweek\/70007261\" target=\"_top\">Snowstorm to threaten mid-Atlantic, New England before major freeze-up at midweek<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/what-is-a-polar-vortex\/21793077\" target=\"_top\">What is a polar vortex?<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/the-dangers-of-frostbite-how-to-prevent-spot-and-treat-it\/70003735\" target=\"_top\">The dangers of frostbite: How to prevent, spot and treat it<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/how-to-protect-prevent-pipes-from-freezing-in-frigid-cold-winter-weather\/55374649\" target=\"_top\">How to protect pipes from freezing in frigid weather<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The harshest conditions are anticipated from North Dakota to northern Illinois, where there can be a prolonged stretch of dangerously low AccuWeather RealFeel\u00ae Temperatures that can cause frostbite in mere minutes.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday night, widespread lows under 30 below zero will grip much of North Dakota, eastern South Dakota and Minnesota. Temperatures in Chicago can drop to 25 below zero for the first time since the mid-1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Little recovery in temperatures is expected on Wednesday with highs stopping well short of rising above 10 below zero from Fargo, North Dakota, to Minneapolis and Chicago. Highs in the single digits will have those from Kansas City, Missouri, to St. Louis to Cincinnati, Ohio, and Pittsburgh shivering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accuweather.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/e879b67\/2147483647\/resize\/590x\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faccuweather-bsp.s3.amazonaws.com%2F9f%2Faa%2Fb9a82fb048a59f43facf003722a1%2Fcold-outbreak-jan-27.jpeg\" alt=\"Cold outbreak Jan 27\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wednesday night can be just as cold, if not colder than, Tuesday night in many areas.<\/p>\n<p>As biting winds usher in the Arctic blast, AccuWeather RealFeel\u00ae Temperatures can drop under 40 below zero from Fargo to Minneapolis and Chicago on Tuesday night and hold there into at least Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot stress how dangerously cold it will be,\u201d Doll stated. &#8220;An entire generation has gone by without experiencing this type of cold in the Chicago area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The cold can shatter records both during the day and at night as temperatures are held 20 to 40 degrees below normal.<\/p>\n<p>The last sub-zero high in Chicago was on January 6 of 2014, when the temperature only reached -2F.<\/p>\n<p>January 13 to January 15 of 2009 was the last period of three consecutive days with subzero high temperatures in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accuweather.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/6b99b6b\/2147483647\/resize\/590x\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faccuweather-bsp.s3.amazonaws.com%2Feb%2Fde%2Fe4e39ebe476a82c167a8d2507be1%2Frecordlows.jpg\" alt=\"RecordLows\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In preparation for the cold, percautions were being taken in several states.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin governor, Tony Evers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovEvers\/status\/1089945797062545409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared a state of emergency<\/a>\u00a0on Monday morning through Friday for the dangerous cold and blowing and drifting snow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/downloads.accuweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the free AccuWeather app<\/a>\u00a0to see just how cold it will get in your area.<\/p>\n<p>Residents will once again have to take the proper precautions and cover all exposed skin to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. The homeless should be encouraged to stay in shelters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, homeless shelters will likely fill up quickly,\u201d added Doll.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure that livestock have sufficient means to stay warm and limit time that pets venture outside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accuweather.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/7783430\/2147483647\/resize\/590x\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Faccuweather-bsp.s3.amazonaws.com%2F44%2Ff2%2Fc51cae134a1fa6c08357a8075379%2Fblast-jan-27.jpeg\" alt=\"Blast Jan 27\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Residents should ensure that they have a proper amount of propane, wood pellets and\/or firewood to last during this cold outbreak. A life-threatening situation can arise in homes that lose heat.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists should travel with a winter survival kit in the event their vehicle breaks down and are then forced to wait for help.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the cold, a prolonged\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/whiteouts-treacherous-travel-to-hit-great-lakes-as-lake-effect-snow-ramps-up-through-friday\/70007240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lake-effect snow and squall<\/a>\u00a0event can create other travel hazards downwind of the Great Lakes. More ice jams can form along area rivers, raising the risk of flooding in nearby communities.<\/p>\n<p>While the harshest conditions are anticipated across the Midwest, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/northeastern-us-faces-most-extreme-cold-of-winter-thus-far-as-polar-vortex-looms\/70007269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arctic blast will spread to the Northeast<\/a>\u00a0to close out January.<\/p>\n<p>As is the case in the Midwest, RealFeel\u00ae Temperatures Wednesday through Thursday will be dangerously low due to the wind.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.megaphone.fm\/ACC3669558113?\" width=\"100%\" height=\"200\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Winter storms create a unique set of challenges in the Northeast compared to other areas of the country.
