He has highlighted how the fakes defraud users, advertisers and investors alike.<\/p>\n<p>Rocked by a major privacy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/446887-facebook-sued-cambridge-analytica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scandal<\/a>\u00a0last year, Facebook has been trying to create an image of a company with high community standards, striving to curb the illicit behavior of users. But the company may be deliberately understating the amount of fake accounts, a new report says.<\/p>\n<p>The firm&#8217;s own quarterly investment reports reveal that the its much-vaunted account base, which is supposedly has over 2 billion monthly active users, is packed with fake accounts communicating with just enough randomness to trick the social network&#8217;s algorithms, according to Zuckerberg&#8217;s former classmate at Harvard, Aaron Greenspan.<\/p>\n<p>In a report,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plainsite.org\/realitycheck\/fb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a>\u00a0by his legal data nonprofit PlainSite, Greenspan alleges that Facebook\u00a0<em>&#8220;has been lying to the public about the scale of its problem with fake accounts, which likely exceed 50 percent of its network.&#8221;<\/em>Greenspan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2007\/09\/02\/who-founded-facebook-aaron-greenspan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that he had originally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2009\/05\/facebook-and-think-computer-corporation-resolve-trademark-dispute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">come<\/a>\u00a0up with the idea for Facebook and worked on the future network, before Zuckerberg eventually founded the company. That claim was the basis of the trademark\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/digital\/facebook-announces-settlement-of-legal-dispute-with-another-former-zuckerberg-classmate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dispute<\/a>\u00a0between Facebook and Greenspan&#8217;s company, Think Computer Corporation, settled in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The fake accounts are particularly dangerous because they\u00a0<em>&#8220;often defraud other users on Facebook, through scams, fake news, extortion, and other forms of deception&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and often\u00a0<em>&#8220;involve governments,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0he writes.<\/p>\n<p>He further accused the company of\u00a0<em>&#8220;selling&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0ads to\u00a0<em>&#8220;hundreds of millions of phantom buyers \u2013 users who do not actually exist.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Mark let so many people cheat, for so long, across so many time zones, that he may have (at first) inadvertently created the largest scam in history.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Greenspan, Facebook has attempted to obscure and downplay the actual number of fake accounts and their prevalence by employing\u00a0<em>&#8220;cleverly worded disclaimers&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0in its official reporting as well as dropping\u00a0<em>&#8220;many&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0of the important metrics from quarterly reports altogether.<\/p>\n<p>In his report, citing the social network&#8217;s own estimates, Greenspan concludes that since the end of 2017 Facebook has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/06\/27\/facebook-2-billion-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deleted<\/a>\u00a0at least 2.8 billion fake accounts, which is more that the amount of its monthly active users and more than a half of\u00a0<em>&#8220;all accounts ever created.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Facebook outright denied Greenspan&#8217;s claims.\u00a0<em>&#8220;This report is completely wrong and not based on any facts or research,&#8221;<\/em>the company told RT, adding that Facebook files its fake account estimates with the Securities and Exchange Commission every quarter.\u00a0<em>\u201cThis is unequivocally wrong and responsible reporting means reporting facts, even if it\u2019s about fake accounts,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>Still, an entire industry has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/121551\/bot-bubble-click-farms-have-inflated-social-media-currency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sprung<\/a>\u00a0up to supply convincingly\u00a0<em>&#8220;aged&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0fake Facebook accounts, often bundled by the hundred and boasting less than 1 percent detection rate.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook attracts advertisers by flaunting the access to its billion-plus users, sorted and categorized by a marketer&#8217;s dream of individual data. However, some reports claim that in reality a sizeable amount of traffic online is generated by\u00a0<em>&#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2018\/12\/how-much-of-the-internet-is-fake.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fake-clicking&#8217;<\/a><\/em>\u00a0done by bots and humans working on specially-organized\u00a0<em>&#8216;click farms,&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0as the company reached the market saturation or simply\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2018\/07\/facebook-earnings-show-slow-growth-due-to-lack-of-humans.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;ran out of humans.&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s role in global ads is expected to grow. Digital publishing agency Polar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/app.hubspot.com\/documents\/4934439\/view\/35422028?accessId=bc7916\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0that the tech giant, together with Google and several other\u00a0<em>&#8216;digital goliaths&#8217;<\/em>\u00a0like Amazon, will control 80 percent of all digital advertising in 2019.Small advertisers sued the social media giant last year, claiming it overstated the amount of time users spent watching videos by up to 900 percent. According to Marketing Land, the alleged\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marketingland.com\/heres-itemized-list-facebooks-measurement-errors-date-200663%20isolated%20event\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fraud<\/a>\u00a0is far from an isolated event: Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2018\/10\/16\/facebook-lured-advertisers-by-inflating-ad-watch-times-up-to-900-percent-lawsuit\/%20900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">misreported<\/a>\u00a0the reach of Facebook Page posts, the proportion of users who watch ad videos all the way through, the average time users spend reading\u00a0<em>&#8220;instant articles,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the number of referrals to external websites, and the number of mobile views, as claimed in the reports the outlet collected.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the social network had been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/446501-facebook-bug-photos-leaked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">entrenched<\/a>\u00a0in high-profile controversies over users&#8217; data protection, privacy issues, and the spread of misinformation online. To make matters worse, Facebook&#8217;s market value has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/434378-facebook-loses-biggest-single-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sliding<\/a>downwards since July, when it lost almost $120 billion in a single day of trading \u2013 the largest-ever drop in company valuation in stock market history.<\/p>\n<p>Following the Cambridge Analytica data-mining scandal, the company&#8217;s CEO Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/423651-zuckerberg-facebook-apology-cambridge-analytica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">admitted<\/a>\u00a0that Facebook didn&#8217;t do enough to safeguard its users&#8217; interests and apologized. In response to mounting criticism, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/uk\/422272-mark-zuckerberg-sunday-newspaper-apology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vowed<\/a>\u00a0to step up commitments to privacy protection.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to combat disinformation, the company\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/viral\/375121-facebook-fake-news-trending-algorithm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experimented<\/a>\u00a0with its algorithms to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/usa\/422791-facebook-third-parties-fake-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">detect<\/a>\u00a0&#8216;fake news&#8217; and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kathleenchaykowski\/2017\/05\/03\/facebook-is-hiring-3000-moderators-in-push-to-curb-violent-videos\/#5f9c15658cbe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">brought<\/a>third-party fact-checkers on board for help.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook&#8217;s model of operations\u00a0<em>&#8220;can feel opaque&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0and be hard to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/01\/25\/facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-defends-use-of-personal-data-in-wsj-op-ep.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">understand<\/a>\u00a0for outsiders, Mark Zuckerberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-facts-about-facebook-11548374613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in an op-ed for Wall Street Journal on Thursday.In the first six months of 2018 alone Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2018\/11\/15\/facebook-says-it-removed-1-5-billion-fake-accounts-in-the-past-6-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a>\u00a0it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018\/11\/15\/facebook-transparency-report-fake-account-removal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">removed<\/a>\u00a0around 1.5 billion fake accounts. Last year, the company also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2018\/10\/coordinated-inauthentic-behavior-takedown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0removing fake accounts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2019\/01\/removing-cib-from-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linked<\/a>\u00a0to either Russia or Iran, and although the numbers were minute on the overall scale, measuring from under 100 to several hundred, the news received wide coverage.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Sometimes this means people assume we do things that we don&#8217;t do.
