As Statista&#8217;s Katharina Buchholz reports,<a href=\"https:\/\/c-5uwzmx78pmca09x24l03l0384anj72ax2ektwclnzwvbx2evmb.g01.msn.com\/g00\/3_c-5eee.uav.kwu_\/c-5UWZMXPMCA09x24pbbx78ax3ax2fx2fl03l0384anj72a.ktwclnzwvb.vmbx2fkcuctca_cx78twilax2flwkcumvbx2f9fjsazohrmx2fmkwvBijZmx78wz%E2%80%8Bb.x78ln_$\/$\/$\/$\/$?i10c.ua=1&amp;i10c.dv=17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a survey by The Economist and market researcher YouGov<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>21 percent of Americans reported to be personally affected by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/3501\/the-trump-administration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0government shutdown<\/a>\u00a0in a poll conducted between Jan 12 and Jan 15<\/strong>. 46 percent of people said they knew someone who was personally affected by the limited operability of the government which has been shut down following a disagreement between Republicans and Democrats about building a wall on the Southern border with Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The most commonly reported problem that people were encountering was trying to access a government service that was not operating due to the shutdown.<\/strong>\u00a0Eight percent of Americans questioned reported this problem. Seven percent said that they wanted to visit a national monument or park but couldn\u2019t. Five percent reported that their business was affected. The same amount complained about a government website not being operational.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Infographic: One in Five Americans is Affected by the Shutdown | Statista\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/16704\/americans-affected-by-government-shutdown\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/infographic.statista.com\/normal\/chartoftheday_16704_americans_affected_by_government_shutdown_n.jpg\" alt=\"Infographic: One in Five Americans is Affected by the Shutdown | Statista\" width=\"500\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>You will find more infographics at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chartoftheday\/\">Statista<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The survey also asked people if they had sympathy for furloughed federal workers.<strong>\u00a076 percent of Americans registered as Democrats said they had \u201ca great deal\u201d of sympathy, compared to only 33 percent of voters registered as Republicans.<\/strong>\u00a0Even though Democrats and Republicans reported to being affected by the different aspects of the government shutdown in similar numbers, Democrats more often claimed to know someone affected than Republicans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2019-01-11\/buchanan-memo-trump-declare-emergency\"><em>Pat Buchanan urged Trump to declare the emergency last week<\/em><\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<u><strong>What should Trump do now? Act. He cannot lose this battle with Pelosi without demoralizing his people and imperiling his presidency.<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Since FDR, we have had presidential government. And when U.S. presidents have been decisive activists, history has rewarded their actions.<\/p>\n<p>Lincoln suspended habeas corpus. On taking office, FDR declared a bank holiday. When Britain was barely hanging on in World War II, he swapped 50 destroyers for British bases. He ordered U.S. ships to chase down German submarines and lied about it. Truman fired General MacArthur.<\/p>\n<p>Reagan fired the striking air controllers and ordered the military to occupy Grenada to stop Marxist thugs who had taken over in a coup from taking 500 U.S. medical students hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Critics raged: Reagan had no right to invade.
