In Newsom\u2019s first budget proposal on Friday, the communist included a tax on drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>The new\u00a0budget, titled \u201cCalifornia for All,\u201d declares drinking water a \u201cfundamental right,\u201d yet proposes to tax that \u201cright.\u201d \u201cThe Budget includes short-term measures to bring immediate relief to communities without safe drinking water and also proposes an ongoing sustainable funding source to address this problem into the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/Gavin-Newsom-drinking-water-tax-budget-2019-detail-13527647.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The\u00a0<em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reported that the details of the proposed tax are unknown, however, a similar proposal was abandoned by then-Governor Jerry Brown last year after failing to garner enough support in the legislature.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/01\/13\/californias-gavin-newsom-proposes-tax-on-drinking-water-in-first-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to\u00a0<em>Breitbart<\/em>,<\/a>\u00a0critics have already slammed the plan. Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Travis Allen is\u00a0<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoinTravisAllen\/status\/1083806774312951808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1083806774312951808&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sfgate.com%2Fpolitics%2Farticle%2FGavin-Newsom-drinking-water-tax-budget-2019-detail-13527647.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">urging<\/a>\u00a0fellow Republicans to \u201ctake back\u201d the state on social media, and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association and the\u00a0Association of California Water Agencies are saying that the state should tap into its budget surplus to pay for the needed clear water supplies.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In one of his first official acts <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GavinNewsom<\/a> wants to TAX YOUR WATER. There is no limit to what <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheDemocrats?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TheDemocrats<\/a> will tax or excuses they&#39;ll make to TAKE YOUR MONEY. It&#39;s time Republicans start fighting and TAKE BACK CALIFORNIA!! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mCQOYPIH3t\">https:\/\/t.co\/mCQOYPIH3t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Travis Allen (@JoinTravisAllen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoinTravisAllen\/status\/1083806774312951808?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Fund\u2014Establish a new special fund, with a dedicated funding source from new water, fertilizer, and dairy fees, to enable the State Water Resources Control Board to assist communities, particularly disadvantaged communities, in paying for the short-term and long-term costs of obtaining access to safe and affordable drinking water. This proposal is consistent with the policy framework of SB 623, introduced in the 2017-18 legislative session.
