and to give\u00a0<em>itself\u00a0<\/em>totalitarian control over virtually all aspects of American life.<\/p>\n<p>[<u><strong>ZH<\/strong><\/u>: In the short &#8217;60 Minutes&#8217; clip released on Friday, Ocasio-Cortez&#8217;s didn&#8217;t offer specifics of her &#8216;Green New Deal&#8217; plan to phase out fossil fuels by 2030 in favor of more renewable energy and a reduction in greenhouse gases.\u00a0<strong>But she referred back to past U.S. policies that set top marginal tax rates as high as 70 percent for ultra-wealthy Americans.<\/strong>\u00a0The current top income tax rate is 37 percent.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cOnce you get to, like, the tippy tops &#8212; Happy to continue this debate on the Floor of the People\u2019s House, but it\u2019s clearly not productive to engage here with some of your radical followers. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StayClassy?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#StayClassy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lZCO3oiLUZ\">pic.twitter.com\/lZCO3oiLUZ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Steve Scalise (@SteveScalise) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SteveScalise\/status\/1081790962702188545?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 6, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But posting screenshots of some responses to Ocasio-Ortez\u2019s earlier tweet such as<em><strong>\u00a0\u201ckick his cane,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>he said, \u201cit\u2019s clearly not productive to engage here with some of your radical followers. #StayClassy.\u201d]<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lewrockwell.com\/2019\/01\/thomas-dilorenzo\/green-socialism-is-still-socialism\/\">DiLorenzo continues<\/a>&#8230;<\/em><strong>The first thing to understand about the proposed \u201cGreen New Deal\u201d is that the first New Deal not only failed to end the Great Depression but made it more severe and longer-lasting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Its only \u201csuccess\u201d was in creating endless patronage opportunities and levers of political bribery and extortion for the Democratic Party, opportunities that the Republican Party happily embraced whenever it could to expand its own power and wealth in the succeeding decades.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0The proposed Green New Deal would do the same, only many orders of magnitude worse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><u><strong>Failure of the First New Deal<\/strong><\/u><\/h3>\n<p>At the outset of the Great Depression, 1929, the unemployment rate in America was 2.9% according to U.S. Dept. of Commerce statistics.\u00a0 Unemployment reached its peak in 1933 at 24.9%.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>There was a bit of a recovery as mal-investments were liquidated, but it only dropped the unemployment rate to 14.3% by 1939.<\/strong>\u00a0 It rose to 19.0% in 1938 and was still 14.6% in 1940, on the eve of American entry into World War II.\u00a0 Personal consumption expenditures were still lower in 1940 ($71.9 billion) than in 1929 ($78.9 billion).\u00a0<strong>\u00a0All of this despite eight years of unprecedented New Deal \u201cstimulus spending,\u201d regulating, controlling, subsidizing, lending, inflating, price-controlling, and taxing.<\/strong>\u00a0 The New Deal was an utter failure to the American people.\u00a0 Economists Richard Vedder and Lowell Gallaway estimated in their book,\u00a0<em>Out of Work<\/em>, that the unemployment rate was eight percentage points higher in 1940 than it otherwise would have been without New Deal minimum-wage and pro-union legislation alone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nor did World War II end the Great Depression.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It ended high unemployment only because some 16 million men were sent overseas during the war.\u00a0 Sending a man to die in a foxhole in Germany is not the same as that man going to work in his own country and returning home to have dinner with his family every evening, contrary to Keynesian folklore about how the war supposedly \u201cended the Great Depression.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The average American family back at home was even worse off because of the massive diversion of resources from the consumer and business side of the economy to the government\u2019s military infrastructure.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0The production of new automobiles and other products was made illegal, food was rationed, and everyone sacrificed even more.<\/p>\n<p><u><em><strong>The Great Depression did not really end until\u00a0after the war was over\u00a0and the army was demobilized, returning billions of dollars of resources to the private sector.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/u>Federal government expenditures\u00a0<em>fell<\/em>\u00a0from $98.4 billion in 1945 to $33 billion in 1948.\u00a0 As a result, the year 1946 was the most prosperous year in all of American history in terms of the growth of the private components of GDP:\u00a0 private consumption and investment spending increased by 30% in that one year; no other year has ever been remotely close to that growth rate. Keynesian economists predicted another Great Depression because of the two-thirds reduction in federal spending while the exact opposite happened.\u00a0 That should have discredited Keynesianism forever, but the Washington establishment just ignored or lied about this fact, as it does to this very day.<\/p>\n<p>It took some seventy years, but the \u201cmainstream\u201d of the economics profession finally caught on to this truth, a truth that was recognized by Austrian School economists all along.\u00a0 In an August 2004 article in the prestigious\u00a0<em>Journal of Political Economy<\/em>\u00a0by Harold Cole and Lee Ohanian entitled \u201cNew Deal Policies and the Persistence of the Great Depression\u201d the authors concluded that\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cNew Deal . . . policies did\u00a0not\u00a0lift the economy out of the Depression . . . the\u00a0abandonment\u00a0of these policies coincided with the strong economic recovery of the 1940s\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(emphasis added).<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the New Deal was a political power bonanza for FDR and his fellow Democrats.\u00a0 According to a 1938 Official Report of the U.S. Senate Committee on Campaign Expenditures it was routine for the Roosevelt administration to demand that recipients of government make-work jobs, of which there were millions, register and vote as Democrats.\u00a0 As Jim Couch and William Shughart wrote in\u00a0<em>The Political Economy of the New Deal<\/em>,\u00a0<em><strong>\u201cThe distribution of the billions of dollars appropriated by Congress to prime the economic pump was guided less by considerations of economic need than by the forces of ordinary politics.\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 For example, the nation\u2019s number one economic problem was the South, but since the South was solidly Democratic it received relatively little New Deal spending compared to other regions where FDR needed the votes.\u00a0 And, \u201cThe states that gave Franklin Roosevelt larger percentages of the popular vote in 1932 were rewarded with significantly more federal aid than less-supportive constituencies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>American socialists have always searched for deceptive euphemisms for socialism with which to disguise their totalitarian plans for the rest of us.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cLiberal,\u201d \u201cprogressive,\u201d \u201ceconomic democracy,\u201d \u201cliberation theology,\u201d \u201csocial justice,\u201d and \u201cindustrial policy\u201d are just a few examples.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u201cGreen New Deal\u201d is the latest manifestation of this political con game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What has been proposed is nothing less than the destruction of the fossil-fuel-based energy industries which have long been the lifeblood of capitalism.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>All houses and businesses are to be \u201cupgraded\u201d in terms of their energy use by thousands, or tens of thousands, of government bureaucrats who would presumably go door to door to enforce the state\u2019s energy-use mandates.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0There are vague promises of replacing the entire power grid with \u201crenewable energy sources\u201d such as windmills and solar panels.\u00a0 It all sounds very much like a middle-school paper assignment for an \u201cenvironmental ethics\u201d class.\u00a0 I would not be surprised to learn that Sandy Ocasio took such a class and wrote such a paper in the Westchester County public schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The entire U.S. economy would be \u201cplanned\u201d by a fifteen-member congressional committee, Soviet style.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0There is no acknowledgment at all of the failures of socialist planning\u00a0<em>everywhere<\/em>\u00a0else in the world;
