Nearly 50,000 family units were caught by the U.S. Border Patrol in October and November,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/sw-border-migration\">according to Department of Homeland Security data<\/a>, a fourfold increase over the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary&#8217;s visit comes as her department is under scrutiny for the recent deaths of two Guatemalan migrant children in U.S. custody. On Monday, 8-year old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/26\/680260461\/after-death-of-second-migrant-child-cbp-will-examine-all-children-under-10-years\">Felipe Gomez-Alonza<\/a>\u00a0died after coming down with the flu, and 7-year-old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/13\/676622047\/7-year-old-migrant-girl-dies-of-dehydration-and-shock-in-border-patrol-custody\">Jakelin Caal Maquin<\/a>\u00a0died earlier this month of shock and dehydration. In El Paso, they are being examined at a network of hospitals and pop-up clinics staffed by volunteers. As of Friday, nearly 150 children had been screened under the new procedures and at least four had been admitted to an area hospital, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/borderrac.org\/\">Border Regional Advisory Council<\/a>, a non-profit that is helping coordinate the check-ups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On Saturday, President Trump blamed Democrats for the two children&#8217;s deaths.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Any deaths of children or others at the Border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1079082188665171971?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 29, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Trump has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/11\/01\/663012881\/in-broad-attack-on-asylum-seekers-trump-takes-campaign-message-to-white-house\">repeatedly made unsupported<\/a>\u00a0claims about the dangers posed by incoming migrants; his controversial campaign-promise of a new border wall is at the center of congressional gridlock that has temporarily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/29\/680787463\/fallout-grows-as-partial-government-shutdown-drags-on-into-new-year\">shuttered the federal government.<\/a><\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" aria-label=\"advertisement\"><\/aside>\n<p>Without citing specific numbers, Nielsen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2018\/12\/26\/secretary-kirstjen-m-nielsen-statement-passing-eight-year-old-guatemalan-child\">said this week<\/a>\u00a0that there has been an increase in sick children crossing America&#8217;s southern border. Alan Shapiro, a pediatrician who treats and advocates for immigrant children\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/second-migrant-childs-death-custody-raises-alarm-doctors-nielsen-tours-border-233528492.html\">told Yahoo News<\/a>\u00a0that the claim is &#8220;disingenuous&#8221; adding that &#8220;there&#8217;s an uptick everywhere in the country of viral illnesses in winter. That&#8217;s not specific to migrants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As NPR&#8217;s Joel Rose\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/28\/680794189\/after-two-needless-migrant-deaths-pediatricians-voice-concerns-about-care\">has reported<\/a>, bleak living conditions and a lack of sanitation inside government detention facilities can also make migrant children sick. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nadler.house.gov\/press-release\/top-house-democrats-call-preservation-records-related-child-deaths-cbp-custody-and\">group of Democratic lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0say that when Congress returns to Washington, D.C., next week they will &#8220;hold hearings and conduct oversight of the two deaths that occurred earlier this month, as well as the conditions under which thousands of children are being held in DHS custody.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In El Paso on Friday, Nielsen met with the sector chief and staff at two border patrol stations, as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement leadership, and U.S. Coast Guard medical personnel who are advising the Border Patrol on new screening protocols.<\/p>\n<p>Nielsen also had a conversation with the city&#8217;s Republican mayor, Dee Margo, who welcomed her visit.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I appreciate <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecNielsen?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SecNielsen<\/a> taking the time to meet with me to discuss the El Paso region, and our needs on the border. The move caught city officials and local aid agencies off-guard, as the migrants were left without food, shelter or a place to go. Margo dismissed the unexpected drop-off as a &#8220;glitch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday morning, Nielsen continued her tour in Yuma, Ariz. Details of that visit were not immediately available.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Nielsen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/12\/20\/678643441\/trump-administration-will-send-asylum-seekers-to-mexico-while-claims-are-process\">announced a new policy<\/a>\u00a0that will require asylum seekers at the southern border to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed.
