Dinah Sykes and Rep. Stephanie Clayton made their announcements via Facebook posts, after voters had already made their decisions, joining\u00a0Sen. Barbara Bollier who also left the Republican Party earlier this month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansas.com\/news\/politics-government\/article223283450.html\">according<\/a>\u00a0to The Wichita Eagle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112381\" style=\"width: 494px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sykes-Clayton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112381\" class=\"wp-image-112381 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sykes-Clayton.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sykes-Clayton.jpg 484w, https:\/\/stateofthenation2012.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Sykes-Clayton-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-112381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Images: Senator Dinah Sykes, Representative Stephanie Clayton)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the House reconvenes next month, Clayton \u2013 a lifelong Republican \u2013 will be returning to serve her constituents as a Democrat, presumably without asking their permission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI first ran for office in 2010, when my daughter was in first grade, because of the lack of stable funding for public education,\u201d\u00a0Clayton, who has served in the Kansas Legislature for the 19th District since 2013, said in a Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/clayton4kansas\/posts\/1489637204502463\">post<\/a>\u00a0where she made her announcement.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fclayton4kansas%2Fposts%2F1489637204502463&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"293\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaders in the Kansas House and Senate have now indicated that they will seek to scrap the bipartisan education plan achieved over the last two years, just as we are so close to solving this problem and ending the cycle of school litigation,\u201d she wrote. \u201cMy Republican Party, then, seems to no longer represent or serve the interests of the 19th District, Johnson County, or the State of Kansas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sykes, in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Sykes4KS\/posts\/2141012522587161\">statement<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook as well, announced that she believed she could\u00a0better serve the state and her constituents as a Democrat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-57\">\n<div class=\"ai-adb-hide\" data-ai-debug=\"57\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSykes4KS%2Fposts%2F2141012522587161&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"217\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a moderate person who represents a moderate and pragmatic district that expects me to focus on issues and solutions that impact their day-to-day lives. Increasingly, I see the Republican party focusing on issues and approaches that divide our country. I do not agree with that approach,\u201d Sykes said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, I feel like I can either fight to change the Republican party or fight for the state I love and the people I serve,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI think I can better serve my state and constituents as a member of the Democratic party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing state Rep. Joy Koesten, also a Republican, was also reportedly flipping parties and\u00a0becoming a Democrat,\u00a0according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wibw.com\/content\/news\/Outgoing-lawmaker-switching-from-GOP-to-Democratic-Party-502789422.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.wibw.com\/content\/news\/Outgoing-lawmaker-switching-from-GOP-to-Democratic-Party-502789422.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1545320285146000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHbZ8vraroJRuxeSG_NNTi_whwJBQ\">The Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Representing Mission Hills in the Kansas City area,\u00a0State Sen. Barbara Bollier abandoned the party and those who voted her into office on Dec. 12. The lawmakers all hail from\u00a0Johnson County, traditionally a Republican stronghold, according to The Wichita Eagle.<\/p>\n<p>Republican state\u00a0House Speaker Ron Ryckman denounced the move by Clayton just weeks after the election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this certainly raises questions about a lack of transparency, this is a decision ultimately between Rep. Clayton and her constituents,\u201d Ryckman said.<\/p>\n<p>Retired Lt.
