As 2018 comes to a close, it\u2019s time to review the year\u2019s worst cases of media misquotes, misleading narratives, major corrections and straight-up fake news.<\/p>\n
While last year\u2019s\u00a0fake reporting<\/a>\u00a0largely occurred during the media\u2019s\u00a0relentless pursuit<\/a>\u00a0to prove Russian collusion, this year\u2019s list is much more varied. However, some themes emerged: stories about then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the U.S. border were routinely flagged for misinformation.<\/p>\n Without further ado, here is the list of 2018\u2019s worst examples of fake news:<\/p>\n The Washington Post\u00a0published a story<\/a>\u00a0in December focusing on a 7-year-old migrant child from Guatemala who died in border patrol custody.<\/p>\n Despite WaPo\u2019s\u00a0misleading headline<\/a>\u00a0suggesting border patrol was to blame for the girl\u2019s death, the\u00a0full timeline<\/a>\u00a0of events and statements from the girl\u2019s father\u00a0praising border agents<\/a>\u00a0revealed a different story.<\/p>\n CNN and The Hill both reported on a\u00a0sexual assault claim<\/a>\u00a0against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in late September without ever mentioning that the claim had been quickly retracted.<\/p>\n WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 SEPTEMBER 27: Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifies to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill September 27, 2018 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Win McNamee\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Jeffrey Catalan apologized for making a \u201cmistake\u201d in leveling the false claim against Kavanaugh, but CNN and The Hill\u2019s initial reports on the claim failed to note the retraction. The Hill later retracted a tweet bolstering the claim and CNN\u00a0updated<\/a>\u00a0its misleading report.<\/p>\n Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren released a DNA test in October seeking to prove her repeated claims that she has Native American ancestry.<\/p>\n The Boston Globe initially reported on the DNA test by explaining that Warren was\u00a0somewhere between 1\/32 and 1\/512 Native American. However, the paper eventually issued\u00a0two corrections<\/a>\u00a0that damaged Warren\u2019s ancestral claims even further.<\/p>\n \u201cThe generational range based on the ancestor that the report identified suggests she\u2019s between 1\/64th and 1\/1,024th Native American,\u201d The Globe admitted.<\/p>\n The New York Times initially tied U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley to expensive curtains hanging in the ambassador\u2019s apartment in New York, writing, \u201cNikki Haley\u2019s View of New York Is Priceless. (Photo by DON EMMERT\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n However,\u00a0NYT\u2019s own article<\/a>\u00a0later admitted that the curtains were approved in 2016 and that Haley had no say in the matter.<\/p>\n CNN\u2019s Jim Sciutto, MSNBC\u2019s Katy Tur, and MSNBC\u2019s\u00a0Ari Melber<\/a>\u00a0were all responsible for\u00a0falsely claiming<\/a>\u00a0that Never-Trump Republicans were responsible for initial funding of the salacious Steele dossier.<\/p>\n Washington Free Beacon founder Paul Singer did pay Fusion GPS for standard opposition research, however, he stopped paying\u00a0Fusion GPS well before they contracted Christopher Steele to create the dossier. That research was paid for solely by the DNC and the Clinton campaign.<\/p>\n This falsehood has been shared so many times that even former FBI director\u00a0James Comey<\/a>has repeated it.<\/p>\n CNN political analyst and Sentinel editor Brian Karem published a report in September claiming that \u201cMontgomery County investigators\u201d were looking into an additional allegation of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n Local police disputed that they were investigating any claims, and Karem\u00a0later updated his reporting<\/a>\u00a0to indicate that his sources were not police, but rather random \u201cinvestigators in Montgomery County.\u201d<\/p>\n CNN accused Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz of being \u201cscared\u201d to come on their programs in the wake of the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida.<\/p>\n ATASCOCITA, TX \u2013 NOVEMBER 05: U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz\u00a0blasted CNN<\/a>\u00a0for the falsehood, explaining on Twitter that he had done a 15-minute interview on the network the day prior.<\/p>\n \u201cCNN has aired NONE of it,\u201d Cruz complained. \u201cWhy not air the (entire) interview?<\/p>\n After a May school shooting in Texas,\u00a0CNN anchor Jim Sciutto and political correspondent Sara Murray both claimed that there had already been 22 school shootings in 2018.<\/p>\n CNN\u2019s list of \u201cschool shootings<\/a>\u201d includes accidental firearm discharges, events that don\u2019t involve any students, and domestic disputes \u2014 hardly the incidents that most people consider to be a school shooting.<\/p>\n While NBC\u2019s story is not incorrect, its\u00a0choice to sit on evidence<\/a>\u00a0that contradicted a serious sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh earned them a spot on this list.<\/p>\n Celebrity porn lawyer Michael Avenatti claimed he knew a second woman who could back up gang rape allegations made against Kavanaugh by his client, Julie Swetnick.<\/p>\n That second woman actually contradicted the allegations in a phone interview with NBC News on September 30. Mysteriously, NBC chose not to publish this information until weeks later and after Kavanaugh had already been confirmed to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n McClatchy\u00a0reported in April<\/a>\u00a0that special counsel Robert Mueller had evidence that former Trump attorney Michael Cohen had been in Prague in the summer of 2016. CLARY\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n But no other news outlets came forward to confirm McClatchy\u2019s reporting and a spokesperson for Mueller\u2019s team hinted to The Daily Caller News Foundation that the report\u00a0may be false<\/a>.<\/p>\n Cohen\u2019s attorney, Lanny Davis,\u00a0emphatically denied<\/a>\u00a0in December that Cohen had ever been in Prague as the dossier alleges.<\/p>\n CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta got into an\u00a0ugly, public battle<\/a>\u00a0with President Donald Trump over immigration in November. During the testy exchange, Acosta claimed that illegal immigrants would \u201cnot be\u201d\u00a0trying to climb over the U.S.-Mexico border wall.<\/p>\n TOPSHOT \u2013 US President Donald Trump points to journalist Jim Acosta from CNN during a post-election press conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC on November 7, 2018. (Photo by JIM WATSON\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Unfortunately for Acosta, images a week later revealed that immigrants\u00a0were doing exactly<\/a>what he claimed they wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n The Washington Post ran a story in October suggesting that Georgetown Preparatory School was hiring a new employee to deal with fallout from the Kavanaugh hearings.<\/p>\n The author of the report was informed by a spokesperson for Georgetown Prep that the new position was actually listed well before the Kavanaugh hearings. Somehow, that information didn\u2019t make it into the report and WaPo\u00a0had to issue a correction<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThis was a completely unintentional error-I read right over the date in haste. Story was corrected and correction is noted. Have a great weekend, all!\u201d reporter Emily Heil wrote in response to backlash.<\/p>\n Allegations of voter fraud and electoral misconduct in Florida during the 2018 midterms brought Broward County Elections Supervisor Brenda Snipes into the spotlight.<\/p>\n Snipes, a Democrat, had been accused of misconduct in the past and was slammed again for\u00a0violating Florida election law<\/a>.<\/p>\n NBC\u2019s Andrea Mitchell\u00a0bafflingly said<\/a>\u00a0on air that Snipes is a Republican and\u00a0\u201chardly a Democratic official, or someone doing the bidding of the Democratic candidates there.\u201d<\/p>\n The Washington Post had to\u00a0issue a correction<\/a>\u00a0after falsely attributing a quote about poverty to U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.<\/p>\n After multiple requests by Haley for WaPo to issue a correction, the paper admitted that the quote in question was actually said by\u00a0The U.S. Permanent Mission to the United Nations and International Organizations in Geneva.<\/p>\n CNN anchor Chris Cuomo spread a\u00a0false story<\/a>\u00a0claiming that a 20-year-old student was able to purchase an AR-15 rifle without going through a background check.<\/p>\n NEW YORK, NY \u2013 DECEMBER 09: Chris Cuomo attends the 12th Annual CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute at American Museum of Natural History on December 9, 2018 in New York City. (Photo by Michael Loccisano\/Getty Images for CNN )<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The story itself admitted that the student never actually finished filling out paperwork \u2014 which would trigger the background check \u2014 nor did he purchase the gun.<\/p>\n Cuomo doubled down on sharing the story, insisting that the \u201cpoint\u201d he was trying to make still stood.<\/p>\n President Donald Trump referred to corruption and bias within the FBI, particularly related to the Russia probe, as a \u201ccancer\u201d during a September interview with\u00a0The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n The media\u00a0repeatedly misquoted<\/a>\u00a0the president and claimed he called the FBI itself \u201ccancer,\u201d despite clarification from the two people who interviewed him.<\/p>\n MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow opened a show in July by insisting that the Trump administration\u00a0edited a tape<\/a>\u00a0of the president\u2019s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on\u00a0July 16 in Helsinki.<\/p>\n The Washington Post\u2019s Phillip Bump pointed out that the error was made by reporters too and was due to a change \u201cbetween the feed from the reporters and the feed from the translator.\u201d<\/p>\n CNN reported in July that former Trump attorney Michael Cohen was prepared to tell special counsel Robert Mueller that the president had knowledge in advance of a Trump Tower meeting between his son and Russians.<\/p>\n WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 NOVEMBER 14: Lanny Davis attends the Newsweek & The Daily Beast 2012 Hero Summit at the United States Institute of Peace on November 14, 2012 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Leigh Vogel\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n But Cohen\u2019s lawyer, Lanny Davis, said in August that CNN\u2019s reporting got \u201cmixed up\u201d and that Cohen had\u00a0no information<\/a>\u00a0related to the Trump Tower meeting. Cohen said the same to Congress on two separate occasions.<\/p>\n CNN doubled, tripled, and\u00a0quadrupled down<\/a>\u00a0on its reporting, despite a series of issues with the report.<\/p>\n MSNBC anchor Brian Williams \u2014 also a\u00a0noted survivor<\/a>\u00a0of a helicopter attack during the Iraq war \u2014 thought he exposed the president for being a dog-hater in an August segment.<\/p>\n Williams claimed his team \u201claunched an extensive web search\u201d and only found one photo of President Donald Trump with a dog.<\/p>\n The Daily Caller\u00a0revealed<\/a>, with the help of a quick Google search, multiple photos of the president holding dogs.<\/p>\n The Washington Post reported during the 2018 midterm elections that Republican Arizona Senate candidate Martha McSally accused her Democratic opponent, Kyrsten Sinema, of treason.<\/p>\n A\u00a0transcript of McSally\u2019s comments<\/a>\u00a0reveals that she was actually knocking Sinema for excusing the treasonous actions of others.<\/p>\n TEMPE, AZ \u2013 AUGUST 28: U.S. Senate candidate U.S. Rep. (Photo by Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cYou said you had no problem with [Americans joining the Taliban],\u201d McSally said. \u201cKyrsten, I want to ask right now whether you\u2019re going to apologize to the veterans and me for saying it\u2019s okay to commit treason?\u201d<\/p>\n NPR published a report in November insisting that Donald Trump Jr. lied to Congress about\u00a0efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow because his statements conflicted with those of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.<\/p>\n However, NPR failed to realize that the piece of Trump Jr.\u2019s testimony they quoted was about\u00a0a different project<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cTrump Jr.\u2019s statements about work on a Trump Tower Moscow that ended in 2014 referred to negotiations with Aras Agalarov,\u201d The Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s Chuck Ross explained. \u201cFelix Sater<\/a>, a businessman with links to Cohen and Russian officials, tried to make a Trump Tower Moscow happen in 2015.\u201d<\/p>\n NBC News\u00a0published and aired a misquote<\/a>\u00a0of Republican Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy in December that suggested he was turning on President Donald Trump. The opposite was true.<\/p>\n NBC\u2019s misquote made it seem that Cassidy was worried the president was involved in illegality related to hush payments to women he had affairs with. However, the full quote shows that Cassidy did not think the hush payments were crimes at all.<\/p>\n \u201cThe only question is then whether or not this so-called hush money is a crime. John Edwards obviously was prosecuted\u00a0 for the same thing and Justice Department failed,\u201d Cassidy explained.<\/p>\n Time Magazine published an infamous cover in June that showed a Honduran child crying at the U.S. border, apparently after she had been separated from her mother. (Photo by ERIC BARADAT\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Later reports also revealed that,\u00a0in contrast to common left-wing talking points<\/a>, the mother and her child were not fleeing violence, and the mother had been previously deported from the U.S. In addition, the mother left three other children in Honduras and allegedly paid a smuggler to help her and her daughter cross the border illegally.<\/p>\n Shortly after it was revealed that a Russian spy was attempting to infiltrate right-wing networks, Mic writer Emily Singer claimed that same Russian spy was present during an Oval Office meeting with Russian diplomat Sergey Lavrov.<\/p>\n Singer claimed Russian spy Maria Butina was\u00a0spotted in a photo<\/a>\u00a0of the meeting, citing the fact that she has red hair like the woman in the photo.<\/p>\n The woman in the photo is actually\u00a0NSC staffer Cari Lutkins.<\/p>\n MSNBC anchor Lawrence O\u2019Donnell\u00a0misquoted<\/a>\u00a0Republican South Carolina Sen. (Photo by Andrew Harnik-Pool\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n O\u2019Donnell claimed that Graham called Ford\u2019s allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh \u201cgarbage,\u201d but Graham\u2019s actual quote reveals he was talking specifically about gang rape allegations.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re a gang rapist when you\u2019re in high school, you don\u2019t just let it go,\u201d Graham said. \u201c[Kavanaugh\u2019s] been at the highest level of public service, under tremendous scrutiny, 6 FBI investigations, and we missed the sophomore and junior gang rapist.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe didn\u2019t miss it. It\u2019s a bunch of garbage,\u201d Graham asserted.<\/p>\n Jennifer Rubin, The Washington Post\u2019s \u201cconservative\u201d columnist, claimed that the prosecutor chosen by the GOP to question Dr. Christine Blasey Ford had previously worked with controversial Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio.<\/p>\n Prosecutor Rachel Mitchell was not \u201csomeone from Sheriff Joe\u2019s operation\u201d as\u00a0Rubin claimed<\/a>\u2014 the two worked in separate agencies.\u00a0Mitchell was employed at the Maricopa County Attorney\u2019s office, while Arpaio worked in the Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n First lady Melania Trump took some time away from public life in June after undergoing kidney surgery, and the\u00a0media quickly started speculating<\/a>\u00a0about her whereabouts.<\/p>\n The media elevated\u00a0several bizarre claims<\/a>\u00a0about Melania, including an allegation that she had moved out of the White House and another that she was secretly recovering from plastic surgery.<\/p>\n Other reporters didn\u2019t cite the conspiracies, but did suggest that something was amiss about Melania\u2019s brief respite from the spotlight.<\/p>\n US First Lady Melania Trump reads the book \u201cOliver the Ornament\u201d as she visits children at Children\u2019s National Hospital in Washington, DC, on December 13, 2018. (Photo by JIM WATSON\/AFP\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe last time we caught a glimpse of her was on May 10,\u201d\u00a0CNN reporter<\/a>\u00a0Brian Stelter said. \u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of questions about her surgery at Walter Reed and now her invisibility\u2026how long does she have to be out of sight to make this a legitimate media story?\u201d<\/p>\n The New Yorker\u2019s Jane Mayer and Ronan Farrow \u2014 generally known for their sharp reporting on sexual harassment \u2014 made a major blunder with their report on Deborah Ramirez\u2019s allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n Ramirez\u00a0claimed Kavanaugh thrust his penis<\/a>\u00a0in her face at a college party, but The New Yorker was unable to produce any firsthand witnesses or even confirm that Kavanaugh was at the party in question.<\/p>\n The New York Times\u00a0even opted not to run<\/a>\u00a0the same allegation because they were unable to corroborate it. Ramirez herself admitted she had significant memory gaps about the incident and she told former classmates that\u00a0she wasn\u2019t even sure<\/a>\u00a0if Kavanaugh was the offender.<\/p>\n The Daily Beast claimed that there is \u201czero evidence\u201d that members of the migrant caravan were\u00a0bringing HIV and TB into the United States.<\/p>\n The Tijuana Health Department\u00a0reported\u00a0a handful of cases<\/a>\u00a0of tuberculosis, HIV and chickenpox among the caravan.\u00a0Officials with the Mexican state of Baja California disputed that there have been cases of tuberculosis, but confirmed that some migrants are carrying HIV and chickenpox.<\/p>\n The Associated Press\u00a0published a report<\/a>\u00a0in June about abuse of child immigrants in the U.S., but did its best to bury the fact that the abuse primarily occurred under the Obama administration.<\/p>\n As this reporter noted at the time, \u201cThe article mentions President Donald Trump and his administration\u2019s zero-tolerance policy at least four times in the first ten paragraphs, leaving the implicit suggestion that the Trump administration is responsible for the alleged abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n The AP sneakily admitted in the 20th paragraph that the alleged abuse began in 2016 \u2014 during the Obama administration \u2014 but never bothered to mention Obama\u2019s name in connection with the report.<\/p>\n Former Brett Kavanaugh clerk Zina Bash, who was sitting behind the Supreme Court nominee during his hearings, was accused of flashing a white supremacist symbol on camera.<\/p>\n The accusation\u00a0stemmed from a video clip<\/a>\u00a0that showed Bash\u2019s hand resting on her arm with the \u201cOK sign,\u201d a symbol that leftists have claimed actually signals \u201cwhite power.\u201d<\/p>\n Far from being a white supremacist, Bash is Mexican and Jewish and her grandparents were Holocaust survivors.<\/p>\n \u201cThe attacks today on my wife are repulsive,\u201d Bash\u2019s husband said. \u201cEveryone tweeting this vicious conspiracy theory should be ashamed of themselves. We weren\u2019t even familiar with the hateful symbol being attributed to her for the random way she rested her hand during a long hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n Several\u00a0reporters<\/a>\u00a0claimed<\/a>\u00a0during the uproar over President Donald Trump\u2019s family separations at the border that President Barack Obama never separated families.<\/p>\n However, reports from\u00a0McClatchy<\/a>\u00a0and statements from former Obama administration officials revealed that, yes, Obama did\u00a0separate some families<\/a>\u00a0who\u00a0crossed the border<\/a>illegally.<\/p>\n MCALLEN, TX \u2013 SEPTEMBER 08: A girl from Central America rests on thermal blankets at a detention facility run by the U.S. Border Patrol on September 8, 2014 in McAllen, Texas.
